Title: Paley Report

Rococoms - March 9, 2006 08:34 AM (GMT)
An abreviated report- I just got home from the 2 hour drive, and have to be up at 6 for work.

First of all, I have to thank Amber for letting me "adopt" her tickets after she couldn't use them- without that, I wouldn't have made it!

So, first off the moderator introduced Katie Jacobs, Paul Amantaisti and David Shore, who introduced the episode as *GASP* a BRAND NEW ONE (as in, "Clueless", sceduled to air 3/28/05. I've gone to 4 Paley events in the last few years, and never gotten a brand new episode, so this was a very special surprise.

Episode rolled- I'm not going to spoil everyone, firstly because I don't want to be the one sued by Fox and secondly because it's really good and it will spoil all the fun- suffice it to say that as a person who likes to watch my House episodes alone so I can squee in private, it was heaven to be among 600 like minded fans all going nuts for the same moments, on a big movie-theatre screen in HDTV. Lots of H/W moments in there, some good Cuddy- it's a fun one.

End of the episode, moderator introduced the cast and Bryan Singer, who arrived late (apparently everyone came just from the set, and barely made it on time). Photos of everyone should be online shortly at wireimage.com or one of those... everyone looked really great and relaxed.

Started with the basic questions- inception of the show, how it came to be, how everyone got their jobs (lots of the same stuff we've heard- Hugh's audition story from Africa, Bryan Singers reaction to it etc and some other fun stuff- all of the cast told their story of how they got cast.

I'm forgetting lots of details here- I'm sure some of the others who where there will fill in or will have taped it, but a few of my favorite parts were just hearing from the actors, and being very, very impressed with their level of understanding and devotion to the characters and backstory.

Hugh: I saw him a few weeks ago at the BackStage West thing, and there is a video on the web somewhere of that, so thats really a better idea if you want to see how is is. Hugh highlight of the evening was that the MTR dug up an old Jeeves and Wooster episode where Hugh sings- priceless. He definatley has gotten more relaxed at these things.

Jesse: Very, very cute- I think that, like on the show, he tends to be the butt of the jokes- but takes it very well. He's very sharp and has a quick wit, and it turns out that when Fox wouldn't fly him out to LA for a screen test, he paid his own way to audition in person- a move which obviously paid off.

Jennifer: I think she impressed me most of all of the group. I think I expected a ditz or a pushover, and she's neither- she's funny, well spoken and is very well aware of the ins and outs of the Cameron character. Sometimes I feel like fans read too much into the way a character is portrayed or written, more than is there- I don't feel that way anymore about Cameron, because Jennifer is very careful about really feeling out the backstory- and if anyone pushes to flesh out her backstory, it will be Jennifer getting it done in the right way. Again, I was really impressed by her. And as a sidebar, her and Jesse did leave together ;)

RSL: he was the quietest of the group, more reserved than anything- I think he felt somewhat out of place, but when he sort of got coaxed out of his shell, he was just fine. Made some comments to the effect that he was happy with the role of Wilson, and as a Sherlock Holmes fan, liked being the "guy that the go-to guy goes to for (help/advice/etc").

Omar: A very serious actor, obviously does a lot of work on his technique and is always working on making himself a better performer. Looked very snappy and was very pleasant.

Lisa: She is such a kick ;-) Definatley the life of the party. Apparently she had trouble getting the role of Cuddy because one of the execs at Fox wouldn't belive that she (Lisa) wasn't really a transvestite (from her role on Ally McBeal). That started a quite funny running joke on the secret Cuddy is hiding... yes, it is JUST a joke. Bryan Singer is a big fan of West Wing, which she was on so that helped with getting the part.

My biggest impression of the evening: The cast has a reverence for the creative team for putting together such quality show from the get go. If there was one recurring theme, it was how surprised everyone involved was to get the script as a potential pilot, and to see a truly good piece of writing, instead of the average (crappy) things that float around. For that, they (the actors) are truly greatful for the show and the entire creative team.

The other thing was that the cast has a great rapport together- they have all become good friends, and have a easy, relaxed way among each other that is easy to sense. The mood in the theatre was one of mutual admiration and respect- the fans for the show, the creative team for the actors, the actors for the writers- it was just a really, really positive atmosphere.

Not too many spoilers. The audience got to ask questions, and aside from a few morons who should be shot for asking idiot questions, they usually brought out interesting responses. For example : Lisa's favorite line she's said on the show: (While running down a hallway) "We got the kidney!". David Shore's: "You know nuns. Take out their IUD and they bounce right back." One thing they want their character to do: Omar: have a date, Lisa: Have Sex, RSL: Recite all of Hamlet :) Hugh: Dissapear (he was semi-joking, but then the rest of the cast took to the idea of an entire episode of "where's house?".

Spoiler wise, other than the screening of Clueless nothing major. House will apparently have some sort of relationship encounters, but no specifics (it sounded more theoretical than anything thats been written as of yet), the leg will continue to be an ongoing issue as it has been (coming and going etc, new treatments etc). Someone did ask about the BOUO, but there was no good explanation- just a ball from teh pilot (oversized tennis ball). The original actually got stolen, so the one they use now is it's dead-ringer.

One other note- they announced that they found out today they were renewed for a 3rd Season (like there was doubt???!!!) so, yay!

Anyway- that's about it. My favorite quote of the evening came after a lady who has vasculitis, and came representing the vasculitis society of america asked a question about where TPTB got the idea to use vasculitis. They looked lost for a second, then David answered: "We're playing god!". (if someone has the exact quote from that, please LMK- i forget it exactly). But it was funny for those of us keeping score on the vasculitis front.

Sadly, the evening came to a crushing, heartbreaking, tragic ending when they announced that the cast had to get up early in the morning and would not be signing AT ALL- they ushered them out the door in a second without so much as letting them spend a moment in the room. Anyone familar with Paley knows that half of the beauty of it is the interaction with the cast and crew after the event- and to not do it was cruel and unusual punishement for myself at least.

Aside from the ending, the night was fabulous, and the best Paley event I've ever attended. Hopefully others where there and post what I've forgotten- but I hope this gives everyone an idea of what an amazing group of people bring us such an amazing show every week!

Wow! very, very cool! I'm so glad you got a ticket and got to go.

Sounds like you had an amazing time, I would have loved to have gone. Some day I'll time it right and get to one of these events! :D

I think that all of what you talked about makes the show what it is. The respect and camradarie (SP?) behind the scenes translated to a better performance by all. It just elevates everyones level of dedication and commitment to the project. It really shows in the finished product.

Besides that it's just so cool to hear nice things about a cast, instead of all the cat fights and dirt the press likes to sensationalize.

And so very cool that you got to see a new episode!! Now I'm jealous! ;)

So was the vasculitis lady cool or was she a raver like the Nurses Advocate thing?

Too bad you didn't get to meet them all. I would have been greatly disappointend too. Understanding and even sympathetic of having to work a 14- 16 hour day, come do this, meet and greet for another couple of hours, then have to be at work at 6AM to do another 14 -16. They've gotta cut something but I'd still be disappointed.

Thanks you for sharing that! At least for me it's almost as exciting as being there! :D

Glad you had fun and cheers for the report- must have been amazing.

Reading another account of the Paley event today and they mentioned that David Shore's favourite line -

QUOTE
You know how it is with nuns: you take out their IUDs and they bounce right back.

(pinched from Taru's Toptastic Transcripts)

- was actually a Hugh Laurie ad lib. How cool is the man?
