Title: Famous Quotes

Alameda - April 20, 2005 07:55 PM (GMT)
Hello All,

Well, as you know I'm new here. I did a little searching but didn't see any thread pertaining to Famous Quotes. So here we go. I thought it would be nice to have a wealth of famous qoutes to ponder and enjoy here at History Alive.

I do not want this to turn into a political debate. If you find a quote offensive, copy it over to another thread to address, please. Let's keep the fire and flames out of this thread.

I'll start the bidding with this:

"We can forgive you for killing our sons. But we will never forgive you for making us kill yours." Golda Meir Prime Minister of Israel from 1969 - 1974

DWCordell1988 - April 20, 2005 08:07 PM (GMT)
Your on with the sons, so I'll add this one...

"I must study politics and war that my sons may have liberty to study mathematics and philosophy."
John Adams

one quote i love is ironically from a man who did nothing good for my country but also in my mind sums up the plight of my country pre 1921(im having trouble finding it online so it may be a bit off)-
"we shall fight them on the beaches we will fight them in the streets we will never give in"-Winston Churchill

ferrets54 - April 20, 2005 09:33 PM (GMT)
"Sir, if you were my husband I would put poison in your tea!" - The first female MP to Winston Churchill

"Madam, if you were my wife I would drink it!" - His response.

Alameda - April 20, 2005 10:03 PM (GMT)
Oh man, we could have an entire thread just dedicated to Churchill.

Here's the exact quote, BTW.

"We shall fight on the beaches. We shall fight on the landing grounds. We shall fight in the fields, and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills. We shall never surrender!" Speech about Dunkirk given in House of Commons June 4, 1940.

Good stuff lads, keep it coming.

Alameda - April 22, 2005 07:18 AM (GMT)
hehe Good one ferrets.

Here's one I came up with a year or so ago.

"It is human nature to believe what you know, before you believe what you see." --Alameda

and the other day someone liked "Those who know it all, know they don't know it all." --Alameda B)

And you thought Cliom's were cheesey!! hehe.

"Tomorrow millions will curse me, but fate wanted it this way."
Hitler before he commited suicide.

You know, that is awful profound.

I hate Hitler and all he stood for. But without WW2, who knows what mistakes we may have made from 1940-Present. And with the BOMB too boot.

Make you shutter to think about.

So in a way, maybe his last words were actually not too far off base.

(Of coarse, 'fate' wanted him dead too...thank God!)

a woman: Sir, you are drunk!
churchill: yes madam, i am. but tomorrow, i shall be sober, whereas you madam, will still be ugly!

No one can be as calculatedly rude as the British, which amazes Americans, who do not understand studied insult and can only offer abuse as a substitute

That reminds me of another one:
"One death is a tragedy; a million is a statistic. "
Joseph Stalin
This is his most cruel one though:
"Death solves all problems - no man, no problem."
Joseph Stalin

seeing as you liked pauls gallico quotes, here are some motre, mainly from british to americans...

The American has no language, he has a dialect, slang, provincialism, accent and so forth
If I owned Texas and Hell, I would rent out Texas and live in Hell
All American writing gives me the impression that Americans don't care for girls at all. What the American male really wants is two things: he wants to be blown by a stranger while reading a newspaper and he wants to be ****ed by his buddy when he's drunk. Everything else is society
It was wonderful to find America, put perhaps it would have been more wonderful to miss it
The American male doesn't mature until he has exhausted all other possibilities

some of those actually are by americans, mark twain in there i think among others lol...

anyways
He is racist, he's homophobic, he's xenophobic and he's a sexist. He's the perfect Republican candidate.
- - - Bill Press (about Pat Buchanan)

and to finish off with one of my own fav quips
Don't thank me for insulting you; it was a pleasure!

(i loooove being sarcastic lol)
