Title: Trivia

Peachy Carnehan - April 20, 2005 04:13 PM (GMT)
Well, I came across an old trivia book at my house, so I thought I'd post some of the questions, see who can get them. (Feel free to jump in with any of your own)

These are general military history questions.

1. What was the Japanese Samurai warrior code of behavior called?
2. What was the Ottoman army's elite fighting corps, which was made up of converts from the empire's Christian (mostly Balkan) provinces?
3. The German imperial fleet at Jutland was called what?

There's a few to get started.

ferrets54 - April 20, 2005 04:25 PM (GMT)
First one is Boshido... or something to that effect.

Frontovik - April 20, 2005 04:49 PM (GMT)
2. Janisarries
3. High Seas Fleet

Profler - April 20, 2005 07:22 PM (GMT)
A fresh one, slightly more abstract.

From where does the word 'Trivia' come from?

Cliomhdubh - April 20, 2005 07:26 PM (GMT)
from trivial-> meaningless,pointless

Further back than that, though to all my knowledge you are certainly correct in your assumption.

Nail on the head more or less, a crossroads north of rome where women gathered to gossip, called Trivia. This spawned the adjective trivial, which in the modern world regressed to Trivia.

and u thought i was just a pretty face

Peachy Carnehan - April 20, 2005 11:18 PM (GMT)
Well, all of the questions were answered correctly, good job everyone.

Here's another one:

1. What is the shortest war in history?

Alameda - April 20, 2005 11:34 PM (GMT)
The Shortest War in History was fought in Zanzibar in 1896. On 25 August, Sultan Hamid bin Thuwaini died, and two hours later, an usurper broke into the Palace and declared himself ruler. In a show of Victorian Gunboat Diplomacy, the Royal Navy was asked to evict him. At precisely 9 o' clock on the 27th, three warships opened fire and in 45 minutes reduced the Palace to rubble, and deposed the usurper. The bombardment has since been called the "Shortest War in History" as verified by the Guinness Book of Records.

Do I get a cookie? B)

Well, then, to get back on topic, a few more not-too-difficult questions.

2. How many ships did the British lose in the Falklands war?

3. In 1791, Ohio governor Arthur St. Clair led 2,300 men against a confederacy of Miamis, Shawnees, and Delawares in northern Ohio and was routed. The loss of 647 men under St. Clair's command was the worst military defeat American troops would ever suffer in a battle with Native Americans. (Custer only led aprox. 210 men into the Battle of Little Big Horn in Eastern Montana.)
