Title: hare shooting
Description: shuold it be done with shotguns

A friend has recentley been on a hare shoot in Norfolk and when entering the farm gates was issued with HARD HAT AND BRIGHT GREEN WAISTCOAT.
After a cup of tea he looked around and thought i,ve come to a war zone.
WE split up in to teams and lined out and walked towards each other shooting hares in all directions .
The last 50 meters was quite frighting. After that i went home feeling there must be safer options.
On that day some one was shot in the leg
IN my opinion all hare culling should be done with a rifle.
Please let me now if any one has had similar experinces ::

It has never been my cup of tea . I can remember when i was about 18 and went on my first one. Since then i have only held one as a full time keeper and that was because of crop damage.

Did anyone see the program about the last waterloo cup last week?
Utter shame!
Hare shooting can be done safley IF you have the right team of guns in place, But it has been my experience that hare shoots tend to attract those that seem to have never even picked up a gun, let alone be able to shoot safley.
In the end its all down to the person organising the day, in my opinion he is responsible for control and this is what it boils down too, CONTROL OF THE SHOOTERS.

her indoors loves neck shooting hares out to 120-30 yards with her .17 hmr. They usually go down pole-axed where they stood rather than doing circus acrobatics. And with minimal meat damage. To my mind the HMR has found it's niche in our arsenal.

do you not have problems with running dogs if they are that tame.

All them pics where taken where poachers cant get to. The rest of the estate is crammed full of poachers alot of the time. This year it seems to have been a bit quieter but theres days where ye dont get nowt done because of them.

smudge, do the police help where you are or do you have to go alone as the saying goes.

We used to get horrendous problems at certain times of the year, most weekends it was like world war 3.
The police were quite handy though.

Tis a shame courseing is banned but you can still flush em with dogs only to shoot em,dosent say how, what with,or when so the options are plentyful but this will only help the old poachers i suppose?
Goes to show being law abiding dont work under new labour(1984)

hi all

Just a quick comment after reading all the chats.
I have lamped for hares or rabbits only taking one or two hares from the land I use a year, rabbits are not really counted as only a few are taken each outing. Today I shot this seasons first hare with a shot gun (12g). :D :D :D

I normally go out with a friend as a pair of guns over the land, no dogs, Ive never used dogs, although would like to try, more if it was my own dog(s). I could not do a driven hare day and it may be out of order but it seems better the less people there are. Enjoy the day :D

DO Hares hold ther breath when faced with aproaching dogs so to prevent scent being made airborne and therefor from an air scenting dog not detectable or is this a myth
