What are the regulations (if any) governing birds of prey and taxidermy?

hok boi - April 1, 2007 12:28 AM (GMT)
obviously birds are not supposed to be obtained by illegal means and if they are not captive bred then you must apply to defra for an a10 if you are going to sell them also you must keep a detailed log of any birds in your possession :D

Ogi - April 2, 2007 09:47 PM (GMT)
If birds can not be obtained by illegal means then surely any bird that is not captive bread must have been obtained by illegal means, unless you are talking about road kill but there again I would imagine that there are stringent regulations governing such acquisition.

hok boi - April 5, 2007 08:00 PM (GMT)
as long as the birds have died naturally, i may use them, as long as i have kept a detailed log regarding the bird and apply to defra for an article 10 certificate

Ogi - April 8, 2007 09:02 PM (GMT)
Who determines whether a creature has died of natural causes and what safeguards have you in place if DEFRA took it upon themselves to investigate?

hok boi - April 10, 2007 12:58 AM (GMT)
i suppose as long as they are not intentionally killed by man that would constitute as "natural"
as for safeguards as soon as defra are aware that you are practicing as a taxidermist, you can expect a visit from them and your records and specimens inspected

hok boi - April 21, 2007 10:35 AM (GMT)
if anyone is interested i am selling an african grey parrot at a bargain price of £50

Ogi - April 21, 2007 07:37 PM (GMT)
Flaming heck I have a live pet one of those that come 9pm of an evening when I finally get a chance to sit down and watch a bit of telly he decides to go through his entire repertoire of chattering and singing  . Its my daughters pet bird but I just wander whether she would notice if I swapped it with a stuffed one.

There is no getting away from the fact that there are bad apples in all walks of life, I have absolutely no doubt that the vast majority of people involved in shooting and general hunting are decent law abiding people who abide by the letter of the law, there will however be the idiots and unscrupulous persons who may well view you’re post as a means of making money.
When accepting such birds from people what steps do you take if any to ensure that they have encountered an accidental death?

it is pretty easy to tell, when you skin them it reveals almost everything that you would want to know about how they die eg a bird with a shirt full of broken ribs is most certainly a rta one with a small puncture on the outside and reveals some haemorraging under the skin usually reveals a pellet or something like that inside the body.
luckily i have never had to involve the police as a result of someone killing a bird of prey.

The RTC causality would be quite obvious as would be any other physical signs but what about illegally acquired birds which could have been poisoned etc. As I said, there will always be an idiot out there somewhere that will view you’re earlier post as a means of making some easy money.

mandyclare - May 9, 2007 07:03 PM (GMT)
good taxidermy is a work of art and i admire you for it however i have bad childhood memories of a old lady up the street who had 3 stuffed yorkshire terriers in her window :D

i know what you mean.
other than an expensive biopsy at the vet i dont thinkl there is any way of telling if a bird has been poisoned, does any one else know?

hok boi - May 16, 2007 06:04 PM (GMT)
1-2 days usually depending on what you are doing, i am doing a common buzzard this week, 3 days so far

mandyclare - May 16, 2007 06:39 PM (GMT)
thought it would take much longer. Do you have any live birds yourself to study or do you use photographs ?

hok boi - May 16, 2007 07:41 PM (GMT)
i am a falconer so i have many to study
birds of prey seem to be a bad word around keepers :P

mandyclare - May 17, 2007 09:25 PM (GMT)
not round here all our lowland keepers interested, well nearly all ,my daughter has several in our garden and my husband is head keeper!! one of the under keepers also has a bengal eagle owl of his own!! so not a problem in this area :D

hok boi - May 18, 2007 11:27 AM (GMT)
up my way, falconers are generally viewed with suspicion :(

mandyclare - May 27, 2007 09:11 PM (GMT)
have you finished one yet ?
