Title: Foxes

Pete The Poacher - January 23, 2007 12:56 PM (GMT)
just wondering if anyone has shot many foxes this year so far? i have shot 4 foxes within a week, by putting a dead goose out in the field next to the house and peging it down with a metal renforcing rod.At 10.30pm every night i could put £100 that there would be a fox out in that field.i have even had two foxes on it at the same time.We have a 97 arce plot of woodland, and people release foxes up theer every year because last year by the 1st of february i had shot 12, most of which had just been sleeping out in the middle of a field. Has anyone else had this problem.

havent shot any yet but got a pest one hanging about! wot do you shoot them with? shotgun or rifle?
i have a .22lr rifle and 12bore shotgun, which would be best?

we use a 22rimfire for rabbits and a .243 for foxes and deer. What do you think the best cailber rifle is for foxes? i ould use the 22lr insted of the shotgun unless you have some special fox cartridges. and they are fairly close range.

I use 6mmPPc and 22.250 for foxes, both lay them straight out no problem. PPC is far more accurate. moderated and is my first choice. Loaded with 65gr VMAX.

Takeaguess,

If you can get close to them both will do the job but neither are ideal, my preferred option from the two would be to head shoot with the rifle. Shotgun needs large pellets (BB or bigger) and range needs to be 30 yards at top.

I have used 36grm 2s and 42grm 1s before without a problem I also use 36grm BB and have tried SG, I prefer the 42grm 1s but that’s just personal preference, they all go bang at the end of the day. ;)

have been concidering late about buying a .222, though have not enough room in gun cabinet to hold it as well, so would have to get rid of 22lr, but find it very useful with magpies, crows etc and especially firing out the bedroom window at stray cats! lol
would a .222 be any use at all?
would only buy one if it was worth it

i would keep the 22lr and get a bigger gun cabinet so that you can have a .222 aswell.

have thought on that, but being from northern ireland (county antrim, larne) i dont think its the same as in the rest of UK. it should be easy enough to get a .222 on the licence as well, but own 2 shotguns already as well! lol

will be at local firearms dealer (well one of 4 in the whole county!) tomorow so will update this and let u all know how it went

Depending on how much you use the rimmy I would also recommend a bigger cabinate. Once you get into centerfire you will find needs for another one !.
