Title: Back Lash
Description: One of my Big Projects

Riven - September 11, 2004 03:51 PM (GMT)
First, story plot:

This is the story of Oni Anderson, an LA cop who eight years ago had to give up everything she held dear just to keep her son and herself alive. For eight long years she thought she had escaped her dark past, but now, her past has come back and now the lives of her son, her partner and all those that she knows are in danger.
In the end it will take everything she has to stay alive, but even she may not be able to get out of this one.....

Well, this is the prologue to my Action/Adventure/Thriller story, staring the first incarnation of the character Oni. This prologue isn't much, but when I get around to fixing it up and finishing it, Chapter 1 will have a lot of action ^_^

Please let me know what you think

Also, this is a novel project, I need to come up with a better title though, Back Lash sucks!

Prologue: Eight Years Ago

The drive along the forest trail was surprisingly smooth, not at all what Oni had been expecting, she had decided on an SUV because she thought it was going to be necessary along the trail, but still it was serving it’s purpose by shielding her and her son from the bitter cold and the wind outside that snapped at the car and keeping them warm with the heater on. However except for the softly playing radio, the car was eerily silent; it had been for a few hours now.

Curled up on the passenger side seat was her son, barely six years old and sleeping peacefully like he had been for the last six hours, she realized that he always fell asleep almost always after half and hour of being inside a car, it had made the seven hour trip a very quiet and almost lonely journey, but she knew that it would be even lonelier trip on the way back. If she hadn’t been wearing sun glasses the torment in her eyes would have been visible for anyone to see.

Outside the car it had started snowing again, dropping soft flakes of snow from the sky above, she turned the wind screen wipers on as the snow started to cover it, outside though the grounds were packed with even more of the white powder, the tree branches were bending with the weight of the snow on top on them.

Suddenly she noticed that the trees were starting to thin out and then she stopped as she saw the gates that were no more then fifty meters ahead of her. A fifteen foot tall brick wall that stretched for as far as she could see, stretching far into the forest, with high arching irons gates, and beside the gates were surveillance cameras. Then the gates opened with a small groan and Oni suddenly felt like she was driving into a prison, the feeling sent shivers down her spine, but nevertheless she stepped on the gas and rolled through the gates at almost walking speed.

As they passed through the gates the ground became flat and even, with the snow having been plowed every time it had snowed that day, off further to the side were low wooden fences that disappeared off into the distance and behind them she saw two people that appeared to be no older then eighteen riding horses, kicking up snow behind them. But the far most impressive thing that she could see was the building that she noticed resembled a smaller version of the New York State Library, further behind it she could make out other structures as well that seemed to be taller and longer.

She followed the road up to the building where she saw five limousines that were parked in a neat row a long the road that formed a circle that ran back into itself, making the entrance also the exit.

She pulled up behind the limousines and turned the car off, plunging it into complete silence, except for the soft snores coming from her son; she just sat there for almost ten minutes, just looking at him with a sad and nervous look that she just couldn’t shake. She then looked out the window and saw five groups standing near the steps of the building, families she realized quickly, five women with fur coats pulled tightly around them and the five men wearing long coats and then there was the five kids that all wore the same kind of uniform, the same as the one her son wore.

Getting out of the car Oni walked around to the passenger side and opened the door, the noise was enough to stir her son from his slumber and he looked up at her as he yawned and rubbed his left eye. Without saying a word she checked him over to make sure his clothes were wrinkled up too badly and quickly tidied his short hair up, the whole time though he just eyed her curiously.

‘Where are we mummy?’ he asked finally, looking out the window at the huge building and all the snow that surrounded them completely. She knew that if she gave him half a chance he would be rolling around in it, playing happily and any other time she would have been happy to let him but not today, they didn’t have the time.

‘We’re at your new school honey, come on,’ she said gently as she lifted him out of the car, and then grabbed his suit case off the back seat and closed the door. She turned around and headed for the steps where the others were, she noticed they all had an air of arrogances and self centeredness about them, something common amongst mostly rich people who were far too ambitious. She suddenly wondered how many of the kids that were present were conceived by accident.

As she came to a stop at the steps she let her son down, but still held on to his small hand, a minute or two later she noticed one of the women who looked to be around ten years her senior, looking at her with a weird look. ‘Can I help you, ma’am?’ she asked calmly, staring the women straight in the eye.

‘Aren’t you a little young to be a mother?’ the woman asked with a tone that spoke volumes of her dislike for her that caused Oni’s eye to twitch involuntarily.

‘No, I just naturally retained my youthfulness, but I’m sure you did to when you were younger. I think its nice when grandparents come to see their grand children off on their first day of school,’ Oni said with a smile, this caused the woman to look at her with a look of outrage but nothing seemed to come of her mouth when she opened it to say something to her, she reminded Oni of a fish out of water, she even noticed one of the men, smiling at the shocked and speechless expression.

Moments later the front doors of the building opened and elderly woman stood there, she looked to be about fifty at least, she was thin with gray hair pulled into a bun and she wore a long fur coat similar to the other women and held an air about her that demanded respect. At first she looked at each and every one of them taking in seemingly everything about them, then her eyes came to rest on Oni and after a second there was a slight nod between the both of them. The woman then turned to all of them and smiled brightly, it was obvious that in her earlier years the woman had been quiet beautiful, and most of that beauty was still there.

‘Welcome to the Kalton Private School, I am Mrs. Edwards, I am the headmaster of this school and I will personally be giving you the tour of the school today, please step inside where it’s nice and warm and I will continue’ Mrs. Edwards said and gestured for them to follow her.

Oni picked up the bag beside her with her free hand and walked inside, where she was instantly warmed by the heating of the administration building. She looked around, they were in the lobby with a floor covered with a beautiful rose colored carpet and on the walls hung paintings of people that she figured were either the original founders of the school or the headmasters of the past, she didn’t bother to stop and read the small gold plates of metal at the bottom of each frame.

She started following the group again, listening vaguely to Mrs. Edwards as she told them the history of the school, how it had once been a private training ground for soldiers long ago, and then later the land and buildings had been brought by a man who had turned the place into school. Since then it had mostly been only the children of wealthy families that attended the school, but the school had also given scholarships, to children who had proven to be quiet talented or had high IQ levels in the last fifty or so years.

While Oni’s family wasn’t lacking in the money department, she wouldn’t exactly call them overly rich, and her son was smart but only slightly above average, but neither of those were the reason why she had been able to get him into this school, it wasn’t something she planned on making a permanent thing either. She hoped it wouldn’t be anyway.

Her mind was suddenly brought back to the present as she saw a man walking towards them, he wore an expensive looking suit, he had tidy hair and was generally hansom, she almost shook her head, he hadn’t changed a bit since she had last seen him.

‘I was starting to think you weren’t going to show Oni,’ he said as he came up to her, she had forgotten how tall he was, he stood almost two foot over her, though that wasn’t particularly all that hard because she was kind of short when compared to most people, she got mistaken for girl in her mid teens a lot because of her height.

She shrugged. ‘I didn’t want to risk going fast, the snow’s made the roads slippery,’ she explained as she took off her sun glasses. ‘This place is nicer then what you described in your letter Andrew; I imagine the rest of the school is just as nice?’

‘Don’t worry Oni, Zack is going to love it here, but are you sure you want to do this?’ he asked her, his tone becoming serious but at the same time she could see the concern in his eyes that was probably meant for her.

She nodded reluctantly. ‘Its not that I want to Andrew, it’s because I have to. He’ll be much safer here with you around to keep an eye on him, I can’t protect him as well as what I should be able to at the moment, I’d never forgive myself if he got hurt because of me. As soon as I settle this though, I’ll be back to get him as I have no intention of leaving him here,’ she told him, then she sighed sadly. ‘Just promise me, that you’ll keep him safe.’

‘You have my word on that,’ he promised.

She stood there for a second before reaching behind her neck and undoing her necklace that had gold locket attached to it, with cross engraved into it, she then handed it to Andrew who looked at her in confusion. ‘I want you to give that to him’ she explained, he nodded and put into his pocket, Oni then knelt in front of Zack with tears threatening to brake though. ‘Ok Zack, I have to go now, but mummy will be back to get you soon, but Uncle Andrew here is going to look after you until I get back so you be a good boy for him won’t you?’

‘But mummy, why can’t I come with you?’ he asked, his tone sounded panicked and it almost broke her heart to do this to him.

‘Because you can’t honey, I need you to stay here where it’s safe,’ she replied, then gave him a kiss on the cheek and a tight huh. ‘Be good ok?’

She barely gave him time to reply though, she just stood up and with a nod from Andrew she turned around and quickly left, trying desperately to ignore her son’s calls. She had to keep telling herself that she had to do this for him, that there was no other way that he was ever to be safe.

Once she was back inside the SUV she let the tears out, unable to hold them back any longer. She keyed the ignition and turned the car around knowing that if she stayed any longer she wouldn’t be able to go through with it, but as she drove through the gates she looked in the rear view mirror and saw the gates closing followed by a loud clank as they shut completely she knew it was complete. However as the gates got further and further away, she couldn’t help but feel that she had just lost apart of herself.

That's a pretty cool story, but just how many characters named Oni do you have? You should be the RPG king of the name oni, but we'll just have to see if bloodstorm gives you that

I've only used ONi about three times in RPGs, and I've used her a couple of times in some fanfictions, once I even used the name Oni as the name of a mecha ^_^

However, I've used Riven, Zeptha and Rune many more times then Oni, she's relatively new compared to the three brothers

Rune is the star of myIndiana Jones/Tomb Raider type stories called Quest (title, subject to change)
