Title: Overpopulation

6 milliards. That's about how many people there is.
About 500 years ago there was less than one milliard people - bah, less than 500 million people. And it still remained kinda crampy in big cities. Now most villages becomes big cities.
In the end how many people our planet can hold. 12 milliards ? 20 milliards ? Doubtly the latter.
So what kind of solutions we came out with already to prevent overpopulation
1) One child per family - Like hell that works.
2) Abortion - but there are still people against it
3) Wars - ...no, I am serious. Isn't wars are started becasue there is a lot of people disagreeing with each other and to kill that people ?
So what I would like to discuss is whatever overpopulation is a real threat and should we actually take any actions to prevent if. If yes, what kind ?

I think USA and Russian should cooperate and nuke Africa and Middle East.
Kolox - April 24, 2008 12:49 PM (GMT)
^ I think that kind of thinking makes both those countries most hated ;p

^ Indeed.
But you do want to solve the problem, right?

You know some of us are from those countries. Well I'm not... fine... I'm actually half middle east.
Reinard-fox - April 24, 2008 07:35 PM (GMT)
Don't tell me.... you took this seriously?

well, to me it did seem that you were serious. Nevermind then.
On a serious note, i don't believe that this problem can be solved in any human way. For biological reasons.

Something like this... would need a lot of backing and the public may never approve.
If you want it done 'right'... It needs to be secret... with a lot of financial backing... Biotech, is the most discreet way to go.
As it could be applied in mutli places at the same time around the world. Quite likely, with a delay to the effects... Airborne/contagious... and it can get far in cities... spread like wild fire.
There was this newgrounds game... where you play as a potential humanity ending disease...

There are limitations as to what humans can do but we must not forget that there are events that humans cannot do that can control population. There are many theories with regards to the extinction of dinosaurs, one of them (the meteor theory) as the most famous. It'll definitely keep population in check if a meteor hit anywhere, probably causing even mankind extinction. Other natural disastrous like pandemics can also lower population. The Black Death, bird flu and SARS are some of the many examples. However, I certainly don't hope for the human population to be lowered by such disastrous events though.
