Title: After the Summer
Description: starring your favorite boys...
Nefduliniel - February 9, 2004 09:35 PM (GMT)
Okay everybody. As promised here is the first (and rather short) chapter. I'm going to go ahead and say it's rated R for language, violence, some sexuality (nothing graphic, don't worry) and some sensitive issues. Disclaimer: I do not own Dominic Monaghan, Billy Boyd, Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom, or Sean Astin (they own themselves, unfortunately, but I have adjusted their ages accordingly)
Here's the cast:
Kassidy
Jules
Beth
Matt
Lessy
Ellie
Elijah
Dominic
Orlando
Billy
Sean
and various other little people. Well, here goes:
Chapter One:
“Is it straight?” Kassidy asked, standing on her tippy-toes on the stepstool. The picture frame was heavy and slippery and she was getting very tired from trying to hang it by herself.
“It’s fine.” Elijah responded automatically, not taking his eyes off the article he was reading.
“You didn’t even look!” She whined, turning slightly on the stool, red hair swinging in her face.
Elijah extracted his nose from the magazine and studied her for a minute.
“It’s a little low on the left side.” He said, and went back to his reading.
Kassidy stuck her tongue out at him and turned around to fix it. As she was turning, her foot slipped, and she found her self plummeting towards the floor. She gave a little squeak as she fell. She expected to feel her back slam into the hardwood, anticipated the pain. But it did not come. Instead, strong arms grabbed her and pulled her up just before she landed. Once she’d found her footing, she turned to thank her savior, inspecting to see a pair of vibrant blue eyes smiling back at her. Instead she came face to face with a goofy grin and a head of very unruly hair.
“Oh,” she said, straightening up, “Hey Dom. I didn’t hear you come in.”
“Well, I think you were a bit too busy falling over,” he laughed and ran his hand through his hair, “Aren’t you glad I was here?”
“Yes, thank you,” She frowned slightly, “But you shouldn’t have had to catch me.” She threw a scathing glance at Elijah, who was still sitting at the desk reading. Hearing the anger in her voice, he looked up.
“What?” he asked, closing the magazine for the first time that day, “You didn’t hit the floor, did you?”
“No thanks to you!” She shot at him, “What’s so interesting in that magazine, huh? You’ve had your nose in it all day!”
Dominic grinned. He loved to see them fight. They were way too friendly most of the time. He flopped down on Elijah’s bed and watched them eagerly.
“You’re such a drama queen,” Elijah leaned back in his chair, “So you slipped. Big deal.”
“That’s not the point Elijah Jordan Wood! You haven’t paid an ounce of attention to me all day!”
“That’s not true…”
“Oh yeah? How long have I been here?”
“Um…a couple hours.” He scratched his head and looked at Dom for help.
“I’ve been here since seven o’clock this morning you goon!” It was then two o’clock in the afternoon, bringing her total hours spent at his house to seven hours.
“What’s your point?”
“My point is that you’re a lethargic moron today and I want to know why!”
“Geez, Kass, I’m sorry I’m not spending the day worshipping you!” Now he was getting angry, “I didn’t realize you were so insecure.”
“Excuse me!?”
“You heard me.”
Kassidy glared at him for a couple tense moments before turning and slamming out of the apartment. She ran down the drive and hopped into her gleaming car. She wasn’t more than three blocks away when her cell phone rang. She turned it off and tossed it angrily into the back seat on top of a pile of empty Doritos bags and Pepsi bottles.
She knew that she was being a little stubborn, but for the past month or so, Elijah had been completely indifferent about everything. They’d been best friends for a long time, and she’d never seen him like this. It was almost as if he was ignoring her on purpose.
Taking a deep, calming breath, she turned down Sanders Street and into Jules’ driveway. Jules’ car wasn’t in the drive, but the lights were on so she hopped out and went in.
“i'd give up forever to touch you
cause i know that you'd feel me somehow...
when everything's made to be broken, i just want you to know who i am..."
Kassidy could hear snatches of Jules’ favorite song blasting merrily from the back bedroom. She was singing at the top of her voice and Kassidy couldn’t help but laugh.
“Jules, hon, it’s me!” Kassidy called.
Jules came sliding out into the living room. Her reddish-blond hair was sticking up in places and her eyes looked a little bleary. She was wearing a pair of powder blue sweats and an over-large sweatshirt that read “Save the Penguins…”. She looked like she had just crawled out of bed.
“What’s up Jinxy my favoritest friend?” She said, throwing herself down on the couch, which groaned in protest. Kassidy laughed. Her friends had called her Jinx for a long time due to the unlucky fact that her birthday occasionally landed on Friday the Thirteenth (she was actually born on a Thursday, but her first birthday was on a Friday) and she tended to be extremely clumsy.
“Not much…” she lied, sitting in the black leather easy chair.
“Liar!” Jules laughed. They’d known each other since Kindergarten and Kassidy had never really been good at lying. Besides, her normally hazel eyes turned bright green when she was sick or upset.
“I just had a little skirmish with Elijah, that’s all.”
“A skirmish eh? What about?”
“He’s just so…boring lately. He doesn’t want to do anything lately. It’s like he’s ignoring me.”
“Yeah, I kinda noticed that too…” And they settled in for the kind of “girl talk” Kassidy enjoyed. Just her, her best friend, and a fridge full of yummy food.
“Damn!” Elijah slammed the phone down and sank dejectedly back into the desk chair, “She turned her phone off.”
“Well, I’d have to say you royally pissed her off mate.” Dom said sympathetically, getting up and rummaging through the refrigerator.
“Where would she go?”
“Let’s see…”Dom tapped his finger on his chin in mock-puzzlement, “I’m a woman who’s seriously upset and needs a shoulder to cry on….”
“Don’t mock me Dominic.” Elijah threatened.
“She most likely went to Jules house.”
“Why would she go there?”
“Are you really that thick? That’s what women do. They run to their best friend’s house.”
“But I’m her best friend.”
“Yeah, but seeing as how you’re the one that made her angry, she would naturally go to her next best friend. You should have learned this by now, Elijah, you’ve been her “bud” for like 16 years.”
“17.”
“Whatever. The point is, you’ve known her forever and you should know by now how she operates.”
Elijah frowned and picked the phone back up. He let it ring for what seemed like an eternity before hanging up again.
“No answer.” Dom could see the pain in his eyes and knew that he felt really guilty.
“Let me try Jules’ cell.” He dialed the familiar number. It rang twice and then Jules’ light voice came on the line.
“Hey baby!” She said.
“Hey. Whatcha doin’?”
“Not much…You?”
“Not much…listen is Kassidy there?”
“Um-yeah-but-she-doesn’t-want-to-talk-to-Elijah-so-don’t-you-dare-put-him-on-Dominic-if-you-know-what’s-good-for-you!” she said very fast with threat in her voice.
“Oh…okay. But you know this isn’t going to get resolved if they don’t talk.”
“I know, but she wants some space and you’re going to give it to her!” and with that, she hung up. Dom stared at his phone for a minute, stunned. She had never hung up on him before.
He and Jules had been dating for almost seven months (though it seemed like longer). She was everything he wanted to be—brilliant, beautiful, full of life. He remembered the day they first met quite well. It was two years earlier and it had been Elijah’s birthday. As was tradition, Kassidy threw him a huge birthday party and Dom had been invited. He noticed her the moment he first walked in. She had been standing against the far wall talking animatedly to Kassidy and Beth. At the time she had been dating some guy named Jim or John or Jack or…something like that. But that didn’t last long.
Though it was something like love at first sight for Dom, they hardly hit it off right away. Besides the fact that she was already dating someone at the time, she also found him to be rather annoying. He remembered that they had spent the first few months bickering but then they became friends and eventually their relationship transformed into something more.
“What’d she say?” Elijah asked, bringing him abruptly out of his reverie.
“Oh…” he cleared his throat, “She said that Kass is there, but she doesn’t want to talk to you and that we need to give her some space.”
Elijah swore and pushed the magazine off of the desk. The day was not turning out very well.
“Do you remember the first day we all met?” Beth asked as a greeting.
“Well, hello to you too!” Jules laughed. Beth threw herself down on the floor by the couch and pulled out her notebook. She brushed her blond hair out of her face and looked at Jules and Kassidy.
“I have to write about it for psychology and I can’t remember.”
“It was kindergarten!” Kassidy exclaimed, “That was like seventeen years ago!”
“Yeah…” Jules said, getting up and going to the kitchen. She reappeared seconds later with a bag of Cheetos and sat back down, “But I can still remember pretty well.
“It was the first day of school. I remember that I was wearing a fuzzy pink dress and I had long hair…”
“Wait, do you mind if I record you?” Beth interrupted, pulling out her tape recorder. Jules scowled but Kassidy laughed.
“Hey guys, whatcha doin’?” Matt asked tossing her jacket into the corner and sitting practically on top of Beth who grimaced and scooted over. Matt, whose real name was Matilda, was the youngest of their group (she was 20 while the rest of them were 22) and the newest member. She’d only been hanging out with them for a little more than a year. They’d met her at a poetry slam and adopted her as a younger sister.
“I was about to relate the story of our first meeting before I was so rudely interrupted!” Jules said huffily. Though her face was pouty and she sounded mad, her green eyes were twinkling with laughter. Seconds passed and then they all lapsed into uncontrollable laughter during which there was much snorting and knee-slapping. By the time they had finally caught their breath, there was someone knocking at the door.
“Who could that be?” Matt asked, raising her eyebrow, “Lessy wouldn’t knock.”
Jules and Kassidy looked at each other and rolled their eyes. Jules got up and peeked out the window.
“I’ll give you three guesses.” She said, patting Kassidy on the shoulder.
“Ignore it. Finish your story Jule.”
“Okay, so I walk in and Kass is standing at the painting station—always the little artist—so I notice that she’s all alone and I walk over to say hi—“
The pounding recommenced at the front door, this time harder and more frequent.
“We can’t keep ignoring them Kass,” Beth said, getting up, “They can see our cars in the driveway and they know we’re here.” And she went to answer the door. Kassidy frowned as she opened the door and Elijah and Dom rushed in.
“Geez, why’d it take you so long?” Dom asked, flopping down on the floor beside Jules. Elijah shoved his hands in his pockets and looked at Kassidy.
“Can we talk?” he muttered.
Kassidy wanted very much to say no and leave again, but the guilt and hurt in his face stopped her. She had such a weak-spot for him.
“Okay,” she said, standing up, “We’ll talk.”
They walked into the kitchen together, neither one wanting to fight any longer
So, it's short, and not very interesting, but the start is always the hardest. Plus, this is my first real fanfic, so go easy on me, k?

As requested, here is the next chapter, enjoy!:
Chapter 2:
“Hiya Lessy!” Leslie groaned and turned to see Ellie Bateman running towards her. Ellie had a bad habit of hanging around when it was apparent that no one wanted her to. She was overly happy to say the least and tried very hard to be a part of Lessy’s group of friends, though they continually turned her away. She just didn’t fit in with them.
“Oh, hey Ellie.” She said politely.
“Hey, whatcha doin’?”
“Actually, I was just leaving.” Lessy said, pushing her way out the mall’s double doors to strengthen her point.
“Oh…where are you going?”
“Home.”
“Oh…” Ellie said, sounding a little disappointed. Then her face brightened up again, “Hey, I just bought this super cool new CD…maybe we could hang out at your place and listen to it!” Lessy did not like the idea of spending an afternoon with Ellie, but she also did not like being impolite.
“Well, okay, but just for a little while, I promised the guys I’d meet them later.” Big mistake. The minute Ellie heard her mention “the guys” she smiled jovially.
“Hey, maybe I could come with you! I haven’t seen Jules or Beth or Kassidy in a long time!”
“Um…I dunno,” Lessy said. She was afraid of what Jules and Kassidy might do to her if she brought Ellie with her. But Ellie had already grabbed her arm and was dragging her towards her car.
“Um, Ellie, isn’t your car here?” Lessy asked, hoping that would get rid of her.
“Nope! I took the bus.”
“Oh.” They crawled into Leslie’s Subaru and Leslie, admitting defeat, drove towards her house.
***
“So…” Kassidy said, waiting for Elijah to say something.
“Um,” he cleared his throat and shifted uncomfortably, “I’m sorry.”
Kassidy waited for a second for the rest of his apology. When it did not come, she grew angry again.
“You’re sorry? That’s it?”
“No…that’s not it.” He looked weary as he pulled out a chair and sat down. He looked up into her face with misty blue eyes, “Jinx, I didn’t mean to hurt you. I don’t know what got into me.”
Kassidy pulled up a chair next to him and sighed. She could never stay mad at him long.
“I didn’t mean to yell at you either,” she said, “but lately you’ve been so...not you…what’s wrong honey?”
“I dunno…” Kassidy could tell something was really bothering him from the way he shrank down in his seat and seemed to diminish in size.
“Well, listen, let’s not fight like this again, okay?” All the angry feeling of the minutes before had vanished and she wanted nothing better than to be friends again. Elijah smiled and they stood up.
“Okay,” he said, giving her a hug, “And Kass?”
“What?”
“If I ever start being such a jerk again, promise me you’ll deck me, okay?”
“You’ve got it kiddo.” They walked together out to the living room, smiling and happy once again.
***
Approximately one hour later…
“Is anyone home?” Billy called, setting his jacket and keys down on the kitchen table, “Elijah? Dom? Anyone?”
When no one answered, he went into Elijah’s room. There was a magazine lying on the floor and a frame with a picture of the group resting against the far wall next to a silver and green stepstool. A bag of chips and a half-eaten salami sandwich was lying nonchalantly on the bed.
“Where the heck is everybody?” he said aloud. They had said that they would be home all day, so where were they? Suddenly seized with a brilliant idea, he walked to the desk, picked up the phone, and hit the redial button, hoping desperately that the last person they’d called would be someone who knew where they were now, and not last night’s pizza delivery guy.
“Um…hello?” he heard the hesitant reply.
“Jules? It’s Billy.”
“Oh, hey Billy,” he heard Jules reply, “what’re you doin’ at ‘Lijah’s place?”
“Looking for everyone. Where are you guys?”
“Everyone’s here.”
“Where’s ‘here’?”
“My house silly…are you gonna come over?”
“Yeah,” he said, sighing, “I’ll be there in a couple minutes.” They hung up and Billy, feeling very frustrated, left the apartment again, just as quickly as he had arrived. Gee, he thought, starting his car, I’m so glad my friends aren’t complicated.
***
“So Jules, finish your story now that you’re free of interruptions.” Dom said, coming back from the kitchen with food for the third time since he’d arrived. Jules frowned, You’re gonna eat me out of house and home baby, she thought, shaking her head.
“Maybe we should wait for Billy.” She said.
At the sound of his name, Beth stopped chatting with Kassidy and looked around.
“Billy’s coming here?” she asked in a would-be careless voice.
“Yes, Beth, your lover is coming.” Matt said playfully, rolling onto her back and putting the back of her hand on her forehead, “Oh Billy!” she said in a high, wispy voice, “Oh Billy I love you!”
Beth frowned and threw a throw pillow at her.
“Don’t make fun!” She said moodily.
“Ah…come on Bethy! I’m just playin’ with ya! Besides, I kinda think he likes you…” Matt said, dropping her voice to a whisper as if Billy were already in the house.
“You think so?” Beth blushed furiously at the prospect.
Dom and Elijah looked at each other and grinned.
“What do you two know that we don’t?” Kassidy asked, catching their mischievous smiles. They were about to answer when the door opened and Billy himself walked in.
“Guys, next time you decide to have a party, try giving me the right address…” he said angrily, putting his jacket and keys in the kitchen and sitting down across from Beth and Matt.
“Hey Beth.” He said, giving her a silly grin. She blushed again and looked away.
“Hey Billy.”
Kassidy and Jules looked at each other and rolled their eyes. It was turning out to be a very good—and unexpected—party.
“So, are we meeting Lessy and Orlando at Carlos tonight then?” Matt asked, stealing some rice cakes from Dom, who stuck his tongue out at her and scooted away.
“Yuppers,” Jules answered, “At about six o’clock.”
***
Several hours later…
Lessy found that her afternoon with Ellie was not half as bad as she had expected. True, the CD was some perky collection of outdated love songs that made her want to puke. True, Ellie laughed at her own jokes as if they were the funniest things she had ever heard—though Lessy was mildly amused at some of them. And true, Ellie ate practically everything in Lessy’s refrigerator. But as Lessy drove towards Carlo’s (the gang’s most frequented hangout), she had to admit that it hadn’t been all that bad. Once the CD was over Lessy had put on one of her own and they had talked for about an hour and Lessy discovered that there was more to Ellie than just an over-perky freak. She had feelings too. She only hoped the gang would feel the same way. She was weary about taking Ellie with her to meet them, not because she didn’t want Ellie to be there, but because her friends seriously did not like her and she feared their reaction. Oh well, she thought as she drove on, we’ll just have to see.
Carlo’s was a cute, quaint little café on the corner of Main and Juniper. It was done in the traditional French style, with a lazy over hang shadowing the door and tall rounded doors with lots of windows which, were they not covered with heavy curtains, provide lots of refreshing sunlight. The interior was fashioned more in the style of a coffee bar/night club though. There was a large floor for dancing, and an old-fashioned jukebox resting against the far wall. On the sides were lots of little, cozy couches and the lighting was supplied by little lamps on a dozen little round tables scattered throughout. The coffee bar was in the corner, and Carlo—the owner and founder of Carlo’s Café—was standing at it when they walked in.
“Lessy!” he said, coming forward and shaking her hand, “You are my first customer tonight.”
“My friends will be here soon,” Lessy said, laughing at the big man, “Carlo, this is Ellie Bateman.”
“It’s a pleasure to meet you Ellie. Have you come in here before? I never forget a face and I swear I’ve seen you before.”
“Oh, a couple times.” Ellie said, blushing.
Her and Lessy got a couple coffees and went off to a group of tables in the corner that Carlo practically reserved for them each night. Lessy looked at her watch. Almost 6:20, she thought, They’re late...
“We’re late.” Dom complained as Jules drove towards Main street, “Lessy and Orlando are already gonna be there!”
“Stop your whining!” Kassidy complained, hitting the back of the seat. Dom could be such a baby…she looked at Elijah and made a face, “They’re not gonna care if we’re a little late!”
“It’s already like six twenty!”
“Shush, both of you, we’re here.” Jules said as they pulled into the parking lot. She looked around curiously. There were only a half-dozen or so cars parked there. She recognized Lessy’s Subaru but did not see Orlando’s car.
“Lessy’s here, but I wonder where Orlando is?” Kassidy and Elijah shrugged as they climbed out of the car. Billy pulled up beside them and he, Matt, and Beth jumped out. They went inside and went over to Carlo to get their usual drinks.
“Hey Kass,” Jules said, poking her in the ribs, “Look who’s sitting with Less…”
Kassidy turned around and saw Ellie Bateman sitting happily next to Leslie. She groaned, “Why’d she have to bring her along?” They got their drinks and walked over to join their friend.
“Hiya Kassidy!” Ellie said, the minute she was within earshot.
“Hey Ellie.” Kassidy replied, giving her a wry smile. Ellie beamed and then noticed that Elijah was behind her.
“Oh,” she said, giggling and blushing, “Hi Elijah.”
Oh brother! Kassidy thought, sitting down between Elijah and Jules, This is gonna be a long night.

“Hey Billy.” Kassidy and Jules looked at each other and rolled their eyes. It was turning out to be a very good—and unexpected—party. |
 heh heh... silly Billy  and Beth :shine:

Kassidy: yes! they need to know where sean and orlando are!

Kassidy: you're a sad, sadistic person :urgh:
me: mwahahahaha...yes I know...
:hehe:
Okay, well, here it is. It's a bit shorter than the last two...
Chapter 3:
“Ah man!” Orlando sighed, pulling over to check the map for the gazillionth time that day, “Where the hell are we?”
“Face it man,” Sean said, sipping his water, “We’re lost.”
They’d flown to L.A that morning to meet their managers and to look at some new scripts—which they’d both turned down due to the absurdity of the proposed movie—and Orlando had had the brilliant idea of driving home instead of flying. So they rented a car and started out. A decision Orlando—and Sean too, for that matter—would live to regret.
“I told you to go into that truck stop and get directions,” Sean scolded, “instead you come out with a cheeseburger and her number!”
“She was a very nice girl!” Orlando protested, “Besides, I didn’t ask for her number or the burger, she just gave them to me!”
“And you didn’t even get me anything to eat!”
They stared menacingly at each other for a minute, and then burst into laughter.
“Man,” Orlando said, wiping the tears of laughter out of his eyes, “We’ve gotta get home.”
***
It was growing late and Jules could tell that both Matt and Leslie were growing restless. Orlando and Sean were still not home from their voyage to L.A.
“Why don’t you just call Sean’s cell?” she suggested, trying to keep her voice light and encouraging.
“I tried, but he must be out of range because there’s no answer, which worries me more,” she said, frowning, “They were supposed to be back hours ago.”
“I’m sure they’re fine,” Kassidy said, “They probably just got delayed at the airport.” Though she too was worried about the boys, she found it very hard to concentrate on the problem while sitting so close to Ellie, who was sitting practically in Elijah’s lap.
“Oh Elijah,” she giggled, “You’re so funny!”
Kassidy frowned. She didn’t like Ellie to begin with, but the way she was hanging on Elijah was really making her angry. And the fact that he was so polite that he just kept on talking to her wasn’t making matters any better.
“Come on guys, don’t be so gloomy,” Dom said, always the optimist, “I’m sure Sean and Orli just stopped to have a bite…a very big bite! Now come on, let’s have some fun!” and with that he grabbed Jules and dragged her out onto the dance floor. Kassidy laughed, Silly boy, she thought, Jules isn’t much of a dancer. The gang watched them for a minute before they started pairing themselves off to dance.
“Um…Beth?” Billy said timidly, “Do you wanna dance?”
“Okay.” Beth smiled and they went off to boogey. Kassidy shook her head, why don’t you two just get married already? As Kassidy watched them go off, she slid over to the far side of the couch, taking Jules’ seat, giving Elijah room to scoot over, which he did with a grateful gleam in his gorgeous eyes.
“So, I feel like dancing.” Elijah said, looking at Kassidy.
“Okay!” Ellie said, deciding that he was talking to her and standing up.
“Um…” Elijah said, blanching, “Actually Ellie, I was hoping to dance with Kass.” He looked quite uncomfortable.
“Oh…” Ellie said, her smile vanishing as she sat back down, “Oh…of course…you guys go ahead.” And her smile reappeared.
Glad we have your permission… Kassidy thought contemptuously as they went off to dance. The song changed to Mariah Carey’s “I’ve Been Thinkin’ About You”—a most appropriate song.
We’ve known each other
For a long, long time
But I never really noticed all the
Magic in your eyes
I’ve been around you
A thousand times before
And you’ve always been a friend to me
But now I’m wanting more
Elijah was looking at her strangely as he listened to the lyrics, a half-smile playing across his beautifully shaped lips. Kassidy decided to break the silence
“So Elijah,” she said sarcastically, “I kinda think Ellie might like you.”
He snorted and put his head on her shoulder, “I wish she wouldn’t.”
“Why?” she teased, “Isn’t she just the funnest?”
Elijah laughed and pulled away slightly. Their eyes locked and Kassidy found it hard to breathe or do anything. I’m in love with him, she thought as he leaned in and kissed her lightly on the lips.
***
“That’s our exit right there!” Sean said, pointing off to the left. Orlando turned sharply, causing Sean to almost drop the Big Mac that he was gnawing on. After much deliberation they had stopped at a rest stop for directions to discover that—much to Orlando’s amusement, and Sean’s disgust—that they had gone almost fifty miles too far north.
Now that they were back on the right track, Sean decided to call Lessy. She must be worried sick. When he dialed her number, the message came back to tell him that her phone was off. She must have given up hope.
“No answer?” Orlando asked, seeing the disappointment in Sean’s face as he put the phone away.
“Her phone’s off.”
“Try Matty’s.” Orlando suggested. Sean dialed the number and got the same response.
“Nope.”
“Well, we’re almost there.” Orlando looked out the window at what might have been the summer’s most perfect sunset, had he been able to enjoy it with Matt.
Gee girl, he thought, I don’t think I’ve ever been in love like this before. He couldn’t stop thinking about his girlfriend. Though he often kidded around with “the guys” about liking other girls, Matt was the only one he cared about, and he only hoped that she felt the same way.
“You think they’ll be mad?” Sean asked.
“Gosh I hope not.”
Finally the car turned into town and onto Main Street. Five more minutes and they’d both be with the ones they loved.
