Title: The Old Maids Club
Description: For us old ladies!

justbishop - February 5, 2004 04:01 AM (GMT)
Just thought it might be nice for all of us over the age of 18 to come together to talk about bills, work, husbands...that sort of thing. Any takers?

Reannon - February 5, 2004 05:34 AM (GMT)
Well..I'm over 18, but I don't have too many bills (just tuition etc.) or a husband!! Can I still join???

justbishop - February 5, 2004 06:32 PM (GMT)
Sure, as long as you promise to mourn for your lost high school years with me, lol ^_^

Sure! I'll go ahead and start the griping:

ok, so I've been out of work since Dec., which is fun, in a way, cuz I have loads of free time, and I get to play house wife (cooking and cleaning like Donna Reed ^_^ ) but our funds have been running rather low lately. I hate to ask Matt for $$ to pay my share of the bills, but I've gotta do something! The one credit card I have is actually over the limit (and I owe $90 on it this month!) I finally swallowed my pride and applied for unemployment yesterday. Being unemployed totally blows!

WhiteAndie - February 7, 2004 02:52 AM (GMT)
i can imagine ... i always plan shopping the two weeks food and stuff and only pay 50bills (student, i'm live alone ...) but this time, with all the valentines and i do not know why i spend 10 dolars more ... i know it's not taht much ... but counting other things and stuff ... lol and it's just the month first days ... i'm worried ... i hope i'll be ok to the end of the month ... even so i've thinkingabout get a job. .. it's not that popular here in mexico, actually i still live from my parents ... but i really want to earn my own money... it makes me feel independt and not so worried... and i'd have something to do with my free time!!

LOl

yeah, I think even if you still live with your family that even a part-time job makes you feel good about yourself ^_^ That's another thing about being unemployed...I've been doing alot of housework. It makes me feel useful again!

Reannon - February 7, 2004 08:35 PM (GMT)
I'm a glutton for punishment...on top of school work and TRYING to have some semlbance of a social life...I'm doing different clubs at school and volunteering at the Humane Society and other stuff...why oh why? I like it all, but why do I feel the need to be busy? <_<

Oh..jobs...I hate looking for jobs. :cry2: I know I can do the damn job if you'd just give me a shot. I need to find a job for the summer. I don't want to move back home for this summer. I'd like to get a job in a research lab at the university, but I have no experience. We all start somewhere, right? Most of the jobs are through NSERC grants, but you have to fill out all these financial need forms, including your parent's incomes. My parents are so not millionaires, but because of their income I wasn't eligible for OSAP (government student assistance), so I don't know if I'll be considered 'needy' enough for these jobs!!! Arrrrggghhhh...so frustrating! I mean, it's not as if my parents want to pay for everything!! Anyway, yeah, this semester I am poor as poor can be! I guess it adds character

Ahhh...griping is goooood....

Bye for now!!

All you do is just go in and ask for an application, then fill it out, and wait. I usually like to get the name of a manager (or whoever will be making the decision,) and call them in a week if you don't hear anything by then. If you don't get it, it's good to ask what you could improve on before applying again (that is, if you want to work there bad enough to apply again :yay: )

Hey...yeah, JB is right. Just go into the store and ask if they are hiring (usually even if places aren't they will tell you to bring back a resume that they can keep on file). Try to introduce yourself to the manager and exude confidence (which, at least for me, is the hardest part  ). We all have to start somewhere and it doesn't help anything to sit at home and worry (I'm speaking about myself here..trying to take my own advice!). My friend had no job in highschool, didn't have her first job until she was 18. She got a good job working for the Canadian Diabetes Association (or something like that) for the summer. For a restaurant like Chilis, they usually start you off as a hostess or something. Unless you are old enough to sell alcohol..then they may start you as a waitress. It really depends on the manager and company policy.

Confidence is key...you know you are capable..let them know that. :yay:

If you hand in a resume (and you know for sure that they are hiring)...sometimes it's a good idea to do a follow up call like a week later...to let them know that you are still interested.

Good luck! You can do it!!

It's like a work history or CV. And Reannon's right about asking to speak with a Mgr., and making a follow up call. Both good things to do!

Can I join? I'm old! I'll be twenty this month...three years out of high school, and I just finished my two-year Diploma of Arts...I'm not even a student anymore! I also am looking for full-time employment - I still have the part-time supermarket job I've had since I was sixteen, but my boss is being a whore and not giving me many shifts, and I have car registration due in April! Four hundred bucks man!!!

At least now I'll have someone to vent to! hehe

Jaime

LizzieLij21 - March 8, 2004 09:03 AM (GMT)
I'm over 18 too. Can I also join?

To start off, I haven't been in school since I grauated from my High School in June of 2002. I'm still working though, at a movie theater. And the only bills I have to pay is the rent, since I'm one of the few people here over the age of 18 who is still living with their parents. My parents are alway worried and sometime cry "wolf" too much.

Well, That's all from me at the moment.

Lizzie

Reannon - March 9, 2004 04:30 AM (GMT)
Welcome, welcome Jaime and Lizzie!!

This is a great place to vent/get advice about things that seem to hamper us over 18-ers.

@Jaime - what kind of job are you looking for? Something in the arts? Btw..happy birthday!! When is your bday??

@Lizzie - what are your parents worried about? That you'll hang around forever? ^_^ my brother will be 25 in June and he still lives at home. But that's only because he did college in my hometown and he just finished his grad school stuff. Now he's working for the government and will hopefully have enough money soon to buy his own apartment....

LizzieLij21 - March 9, 2004 09:35 AM (GMT)
They are mainly worried about the medical bills, Reannon. Both my parents have some aliment of some sort. My mom had a kindey transplant 26 years ago, caradic sugery on both her eyes, she had a hernia and she has bipolar diease and the usual high blood pressure/cholestrel. My dad has diabetes, a mild case of depression (that's almost like the Bipolar, but mostly depression) and he also has high blood pressure/cholestoral.

My dad is overtly and senstively worried about the bills. He thinks that since I live in a mexican neighborhood, that we might not have enough money left over to pay the bills. My mom and I think that he's crying wolf to many times.

That it I think, Reannon. I hope that is a good answer for you.

I'm 22, I did live in a house with 4 others, but I have recently pulled out and moved back in with my parents because I quit my job for personal reasons and now I can't afford rent...bah. I'm in university studying English and also take night-college courses in art. I have to pay to live with my parents, well I offered, £25 a week, which isn't as much as I used to pay. I'm now looking for an easier job, part time with less stresses, because of the amount of work I'm getting at university. Ah well, wish me luck! lol.

Jaime Girl - March 15, 2004 05:51 AM (GMT)
Hey Reannon! I'm actually a wannabe actress, so I'm looking for anything to support me so I can afford to get headshots done and all that junk while I look (fruitlessly) for an agent. So far the only agent that's even given me a second glance was a crap one where you had to PAY to go to casting sessions, plus the classes you HAVE to take to sign up with them, plus their monthly fees. Everyone knows the only decent casting agencies are the ones that work on commission - they have to find you work before they get any money out of you. My friend Rowan has a really good agent - Barry Michaels - and he's got a small, recurring role on Neighbours...some people have all the luck. :(

Reannon - March 18, 2004 09:42 PM (GMT)
I'm so conflicted!!

I just got offered this job in my hometown for ths summer. If I take it I will make BOATLOADS of money...and the prospect of NOT BEING POOR next year is soooo tempting. But I didn't want to live at home this summer. Most of my friends are staying at school (except one really good friend whom I would miss if I didn't go home). Also, and I know this sounds stupid, but my cat at home HATES my kitten, and listening to them for ANOTHER four months will drive me crazy. However, I cannot give up the money..soooo much money....

I really really wanted to work in a research position here at university for the summer, but that doesn't look like it is going to happen. They do research where I would be working, but it's mostly environmental/ecological and I'm into pathology and animal science. It's my dad's company that offered me the job, and the kicker is that it is a lottery system..and hundreds of students put their names in..so I am really lucky. I always seem to have some luck with jobs...it is just that in this case I was looking for one that would help me forward with my career a bit more. However, the lure of money is pretty damn strong...

So I'm happy and sad and crying and laughing and I can't sit still and I have two damn assignments due tomorrow. And I am so overwhelmed with emotions because I was soooo stressed all semester about finding a job, and now that I have one lined up...it's a HUGE relief but also, as I said, a little less glamorous than I would have wished for.

Anyway...

Good luck Jaime with finding an agent - that is an area I know absolutely nothing about. Ask me about immunology and I can give you a pretty good answer, but the whole drama/acting thing is a giant mystery to me...you are so BRAVE!!! I could never handle the auditions. One day you'll get your agent :)

Lizzie - so sorry to hear about your parents. Life sucks sometimes....I hope everything works out for you. What is the healthcare like in Mexico? I live in Canada, and we have a pretty good healthcare system, but I'm afraid I know nothing about it in Mexico.

Kierra! Good luck!! I understand what you are going through...the damn stress of schoolwork and trying to make ends meet at the same time. *le sigh*

WhiteAndie - March 19, 2004 08:24 PM (GMT)
In mexico ... the people that is working have the rights to have an insurance with the IMSS or ISSTE that are the most important hospitals and healthcare in mexico... and they're public...

Here the privat healthcare isn't as expensive as, for example, in USA... you can pay it ... and there is more like options... a lot of doctors here!!

so ... just in an emergency you go to the hospital. I don't have that kind of insurance because my dad has his own office... so ... i have to go to privat hospitals... thanks God i don't get sick often.. and i've never had to go to an hospital...

but most of the workers at PEMEX for example, that is the biggest Mexico's own company (oils and all of that things... the government own it...) go to IMSS or the company's own hospital..

so it's kind of messy i guess... but not at expensive as in other countries... not even the medicine... the basic medicines are accesible and a little bit expensive but not as much as in USA

so iguess we have some good points to our favor...

Thanks Reannon. It really doesn't matter to me anyways as longs as I have good people surrounding me at all times (I know what you are going to say next, so don't bother telling the whole world about it.)

At least your lucky to have afforadable medical needs, the prices here in the United States are really stupid......and it's bad in the long run.

I see what you mean Andie. But sometimes, the doctors here in the United States go bad too, espically when it comes to money.

But you are right when it comes to actual medical care. My mom has to go to numerious doctor visits and she's is always satifised with their care.
