Title: Undeserved Honor
Description: Viggo, short story...

Shadow of Darkness - January 12, 2004 04:47 AM (GMT)
There is no rating, there is no genre, there is nothing that I choose to put at the top of this short story, except that I wrote it, and it is mine. Viggo belongs to himself and I do not claim him. Please enjoy.

Undeserved Honor
--A short story by Shadow of Darkness

Viggo walked into the ailing girl’s hospital room slowly, his head hanging down a little in respect to her weakness. He looked up slightly and smiled as the form of a young teenager looked back at him with wonder and amazement in her eyes.

“Hello, my name is Vig...”

“I know who you are.” The girl spoke, smiling softly toward Viggo as she interrupted him kindly, “I appreciate you coming.” He nodded and sat in the chair beside her bed, taking a hold of her small, pale hand and squeezing it only a little, “It means alot to me.”

“When I was told what had happened I had to come.” He kept the tears forming in his eyes from falling down his flushed cheeks, trying to keep the sullen look this girl had always seen him as, “I couldn’t say no to coming to see someone who looked up to me in the way you do.”

The young girl smiled as a single tear fell down her cheeks, “You amaze me.” Viggo looked confused by this, wondering how he, a lone, simple man, could amaze someone who seemed as special as this young woman, “The way you do thing. The way you act, and the way you look at life and everything in it, it amazes me in every aspect.” Viggo blushed in amused embarrassment, he wanted nothing more than to be everything this girl saw him as, but he was slowly feeling himself falling apart just by looking into her steely grey eyes.

“I am honored that you think of me in such a way,” he spoke softly and held her small fingers in his hand, running his thumb across her hand as he spoke, keeping his pale blue eyes from revealing the tears within them ever still, “but I am not sure that my life is anything in the lead of yours. You amaze me, young child. You have been here for so long, just sitting in this white room, your own skin tone forming to the colors of these blatantly white walls.” He looked around the room, squeezing her small fingers gently, letting his sadness escape for only a moment as he spoke, “I myself do not think I could hold up to such surroundings.” He looked back down to the weakening girl, knowing her time was going quickly, “I do not think I would last a day within these boundaries.”

Her soft smile became smaller, her colorless eyes closing and opening weakly as she took a shallow breath, “That is why I look up to you so, you are more than a mentor to me, and you are the object of creativity. Your art is amazing, your photography explicit, and the way you speak like God himself was giving you the words to say with every second. I am blessed just to be seeing you in front of me right now.” Viggo could say nothing more; his words had been taken from him as she spoke her last. Her eyes closed one final time, never to open again as she took in one last breath and let it out slowly, a smile still on her pale features as her life slipped away from her small, frail body.

Viggo slowly leaned down to her tiny hand and kissed it gently, letting a tear from each eye fall onto her fingers. He stood back up as he could feel the presence of the girl’s parents behind him in the doorway, letting out a choking breath as he bowed his head and closed his eyes tightly, slowly turning away from the lifeless body and walking out of the room without giving anyone an acknowledgement of any kind as he walked down the hallways of the cold, dreary hospital that had been the prison of this girl for so long.

He walked out into the open air and took a deep breath, letting the tears he had been holding fall freely. He looked up at the window where the girl had been and spoke quietly before getting into his car and driving away, “I do not deserve such an honor.”

This is so sad... but so good... I really like your writing: it's so descriptive!

What happened to the girl to put her in the hospital? (Or is that one of those *mysterious things* never to be revealed?)

It is one of those things that you think about and come up with possible answers and wonder if it is the right one, when in all reality there is no right answer. Just...Something happened to her. End of story.

that was...sooooooooo sad!!! The only time I've cried that much when I read something was the Horse Whisper...

everything that girl said about Viggo was how I felt about him...which made it even more sad to see his reaction...oh lordy I'm still crying
