I watch the morning dawn upon your skin
A splinter in the light
It caught and frayed the very heart of us
It's been hiding there inside for all this time
How a sure thing winds up just like this
Clockwork silence only knows
And it's no one's fault
There's no black and white
Only you and me
On this endless night
And as the hours run away
With another life
Oh, darling can't you see
It's now or never
It's now or never Chapter 3 Katie POV“Kat! Kathleen! Oh my God! Somebody help!” I yelled as my sister lay on the ground unconscious with a large red/purple lump on her forehead.
“Oh my God! I am so sorry, I was trying not to hit her! I am so sorry! I will call 911!” Orlando yelled running over with his dog, Sidi at his heels and he was carrying his three year old daughter, Sarah. He sat down next to Kat as he pulled out his phone and called 911. Everyone was looking at us and I felt horrible and called Elijah as I was crying.
“ELIJAH!” I screamed and he freaked.
“Katie?! Are you all right? Are you in labor?” He asked franticly.
“No, Kat got hurt at the park, she is unconscious. Meet us at the Greenridge memorial in 20 minutes. Bring Liz and Avery with you.” I cried.
“Katie, calm down she will be alright, we will meet you there.” He said and he hung up.
“An ambulance is on the way. Oh my God, I feel terrible.” Orlando said as he lightly brushed his fingers over the large lump on her forehead and pushed her hair out of her face.
“Daddy, is she going to be alright?” Sarah asked Orlando.
“I’m not sure honey. I hope so.” Orlando said as he rubbed his daughters back.
“It’s alright, hopefully it isn’t a concussion. We will make sure Lucky is there to take care of her when we get there.” I said finally starting to calm down and then an ambulance pulled up and came running down. They checked her and told us she had a strong pulse and that she was just knocked out from shock and most likely was not a concussion but just going to be a strong headache. The put her on a stretcher and carried her back up the hill to the ambulance.
“Please let me ride in the ambulance with her.” I said and they nodded her head and I climbed in.
“We will meet you at the hospital in a few minutes, I’ve got to go drop Sidi off at the house.” Orlando said and I smiled and nodded my head as the ambulance pulled away.
Once we arrived at the Hospital Lucky ran over with Dr. Viggo Mortenson, Miranda’s fiancé.
“What the hell happened?” Lucky said as she reached the stretcher.
“Got hit in the head with a baseball.” I said.
“Oh my God, she is still a klutz magnet.” Lucky said rolling her eyes.
“She seems to have a fine pulse.” Viggo said and just then Kat stirred and her
eyes shot open.
“Oh thank God.” I said.
Kat POV“Where the hell am I?!” I half screamed as Katie looked down on me with Lucky
and Viggo checking me and feeling my arm for a pulse and shining a flashlight in my eyes
“Her eyes aren’t dialated, she doesn’t seem to have a concussion. What’s your name?” Viggo asked.
“Kathleen Williams McGregor.” I said.
“What day is it?” Viggo asked.
“Tuesday.” I said.
“Who is your daughter?” Lucky asked.
“Elizabeth McGregor.” I said.
“Who was your high school crush even though your friend was in love with him and it caused them to have the worst fight in their friendship?” Lucky asked as the other 2 looked at her strange.
“Justin Timberlake.” I sighed and Lucky laughed.
“She’s fine.” She said laughing.
“Alright, lets get you into a CAT scan and then we can be sure you don’t have a concussion.” Viggo said and he wheeled me off to get a Cat Scan. After that they put me in a little room in the emergency room where Katie, Lucky, and Orlando and a little curly brown haired girl with green eyes were waiting. Who the heck was the little girl?
“Are you ok?” Katie asked.
“Yes, I’m fine, just sit down, you don’t need all this excitement with your baby.” I said and Katie scowled at me.
“Stop fussing over me, you’re the one who just got hit with a baseball and was knocked out for about 20 minutes.” Katie said.
“Still the same big sis.” I said rolling my eyes and then I winced in pain, a searing pain in my head. Oh talk about your worst hangover feeling headache!
“She’s right, Katie, you need to sit.” Lucky said pulling out a chair closer to my bed and Katie sat down in a huff. “And you need to take some Tylenol for that massive headache you are having.” Lucky said handing me a little cup of water and two Tylenol.
“Kathleen, I am so sorry about hitting you, it was a complete accident. I feel terrible.” Orlando said from the other side of my bed and I turned too quickly and winced again.
“You hit me? I didn’t even see you or I would’ve ducked. It’s alright, accidents happen. I forgive you, I’ve had worse scrapes.” I said smiling slightly and he gave a small smile.
“Thanks.” He said, “I will make it up to you I promise.” He said and I noticed out of the corner of my eye Lucky and Katie exchange smirks.
“Daddy?” The little girl sitting on Orlando’s lap said. Wait, Daddy?!
“Daddy?!” I said shocked.
“Yes, Kathleen, I would like you to meet my daughter Sarah Bloom. Sarah this is Kathleen Williams, out neighbor on the floor below us.” Orlando said to his daughter and she waved at me.
“Nice to meet you.” I said smiling at her.
“Nice to meet you too.” She said shyly.
“Now what was it you needed sweetie?” He asked Sarah.
“I need to go potty.” She whispered.
“Don’t worry, I will take her.” Lucky said, “Come on Sarah sweetie.” Lucky said holding out her hand and Sarah took it and she led her out of the room. Just then Elijah came running around the corner with Liz and Avery in his arms.
“Mommy!” Liz cried as he rushed in and put Avery down and kissed Katie on the cheek.
“Mommy?!” Orlando said shocked.
“Elizabeth!” I said as Elijah passed her off to me and I held her in my arms and kissed her, “Yes, Orlando, this is my daughter Elizabeth McGregor, Elizabeth this is Orlando Bloom.” I said to her and she waved.
“It’s nice to meet you too Elizabeth.” He said smiling at her and he tickled her stomach and she giggled and smiled at him.
“She likes you.” I said smiling and he smiled back, just then Lucky and Sarah came back in.
“Ooooh, a baby!” Sarah said excitedly as she jumped back into her dad’s lap.
“Yes, this is Kathleen’s daughter Elizabeth, you two can play together.” Orlando said and Sarah waved at Elizabeth and Elizabeth shyly waved back. And then Sarah saw Avery and they both started to play games on the floor just as Viggo walked in.
“Hello Kathleen, how are you feeling?” He asked.
“Like I just had 40 shots of vodka.” I said feeling the throbbing in my head increase some as I turned my head too quickly to look at him.
“I figured at most you would have a massive headache, you’re lucky you don’t have a concussion.” Viggo said and Orlando blushed next to me.
“Can I just go home Viggo?” I asked.
“Sure, but if you feel dizziness or sick, give me a call.” Viggo said and I smiled and got out of bed but faltered some and Viggo caught me, “Will someone drive her home?” Viggo asked.
“I will, since I’m heading back home.” Orlando said getting up.
“Great.” Viggo said.
“Can someone get my car down by the park, so I don’t get a parking fine?” I asked.
“I’ll get it after I drop Katie off at our house.” Elijah said.
“Thank you, I feel really tired, so I just want to head home and I will talk to you all later.” I said holding Liz and Orlando nodded and help me out as he held his daughter’s hand as we walked out. He helped me into the back seat of his Toyota Prius and drove me and a now napping Liz home as, Sarah sat in her car seat in the back napping too.
“I guess it’s nap time for the girls.” I whispered and he gave a soft chuckle.
“Yeah, Sarah takes a nap around this time of the day. She was playing around in the back of the shop today, so it doesn’t surprise me if she takes a another nap later and sleeps soundly tonight.” He said smiling as he looked at her through the rearview mirror.
“So, where is Sarah’s mom? Is she out of town on business?” I asked trying to make conversation.
“She is not in the picture anymore.” He said curtly with a frown on his face and I realized he didn’t wear a wedding band and I figured this was a touchy subject and dropped it at that. Did his wife die? Or did she leave them? Or did he divorce her? Now, it seemed was not the time to ask, so I kept my mouth shut. We spent the rest of the trip in silence. We pulled up to our building and he woke Sarah up, who was cranky from being woken up and helped me out of the car and helped me up the stairs and into my apartment.
“Thank you again for helping me.” I whispered.
“Your welcome.” He whispered and he left carrying the slowly falling back asleep Sarah down the hall toward the stairs. I went inside and put Liz in her crib for her nap and I crashed on the couch about to fall asleep when Deirdre came running into my apartment.
“ Oh thank God you are alirght!” She nearly screamed.
“I gave you and Katie a spare key in case of emergencies, not for whenever you wanted to break into my house and scare the crap out of me.” I said from the couch.
“This is an emergency! You got hurt! Katie called me after they left the hospital. So, I hear you met Orlando and then he hit you with a baseball. What the hell did you do to him?” She asked as she sat down next to me on the couch.
“Nothing! He hit me on accident.” I said in defense.
“He is sexy isn’t he? Deirdre said going back to her normal self and with her mischievous grin on her face.
“Deirdre! This is not the time.” I said closing my eyes and leaning my head back on the couch.
“Just answer my question.” She said.
“Fine, yes he is! He has a great smile that made me weak in the knees, beautiful brown eyes that look like pools of chocolate, and the sweetest British accent in the world, also has great hair.” I said and she laughed.
“I knew you would like him. So are you gonna ask him out?” Deirdre asked.
“Deirdre!” I said groaning.
“What?! It was just a question. It sounds like you really like him, so why not ask him out. You need to date hon.” Deirdre said.
“No! The only man I will ever love is Ewan and that’s final!” I said as I leaned my head back again and closed my eyes.
“Fine. So, are you hungry?” Deirdre said dropping the subject.
“Actually, I am.” I said.
“I am going to make you some chicken noodle soup. Rest your head.” Deirdre said.
I started to fall asleep when my phone rang.
“I’ll get it.” Deirdre said and she answered it, “Hello? Oh hi Orlando.” She said and my head popped up and I winced in pain, “Yes, she is right here.” Deirdre said and she walked over to me smiling and handed me the phone.
“Hello?” I said a little groggy.
“Hello Kathleen, I’m sorry if I woke you but I’ve got to ask you something before I loose the courage to.” He said and I felt my eyebrow lift in confusion and curiosity.
“Alright, shoot.” I said.
“Would you like to go out to dinner with me Friday night?” He asked shyly and I stared at the phone in shock unable to speak.
