Title: A Night at the Opera
“This Ladies and Gentlemen is the Opera Populaire Theater, as seen in the film The Phantom of the Opera and also in the Broadway play.” The French tour guide said in her very loud bad English/French accent in front of the theater. It was snowing in Paris and Kathleen was on a Christmas vacation with her boyfriend Orlando Bloom and her best friend Margaret aka Maggie and her boyfriend Wentworth.
“Orlando, can we buy tickets for a performance? Please?” Kat begged Orlando and Maggie looked pleading at Wentworth.
“We can go see.” Orlando said and they all walked over to the ticket booth, ignoring their tour guide and tour group, who they could care less about now.
“Yes, bonjour we would like to buy tickets for a performance? When is your next available performance?” Wentworth asked the woman at the ticket counter.
“We only have seats left for our performance on Christmas Eve.” The woman said and Orlando groaned.
“No, it’s Christmas Eve; I had planned us spending that night at the villa. No, we can catch another show. When is your next available show?” He said to Kat and then turning to the woman.
“January 10th.” She said looking at her computer.
“And we will be back in the UK after the 4th; we have to be back so I can get back to work.” Wentworth said and Maggie and Kat groaned.
‘What show is being performed on Christmas eve?” Maggie asked desperate to get the boys to cooperate with their plans of going to see an actual show at the famous Opera Populaire.
“The Phantom of the Opera.” The woman said rolling her eyes, “We perform that every Christmas Eve and the Nutcracker every Christmas day. It is the tradition.” The woman said and Maggie and Kat looked at each other with excitement and the boys cringed in the screams that were coming in 3, 2, 1…..
“AHHHHHHHH!!!” Kat and Maggie screamed in unison in glee and delight.
“Please? Oh, please can we go Christmas Eve?!” Kat begged Orlando as she gripped his hands.
“Oh come on Wentworth, let’s go see it. We will never get this chance again?” Maggie begged gripping onto Wentworth’s jacket.
“Let us boys talk about it first.” Orlando said nodding at Wentworth and they walked away leaving the girls to giggle amongst themselves.
“Why don’t we just go see it mate?” Wentworth said to Orlando, “Or they will be mad at us for the rest of the trip.” He said and Orlando groaned.
“No, you don’t get it. I was going to propose to Kat on Christmas Eve! I had a romantic evening all planned out!” Orlando whispered angrily at Wentworth.
“Propose to her at the theater, take her up on the stage after the show and propose to her there, she would love that. Talk to the theater and I am sure they would let you do it.” Wentworth said and Orlando’s eyes lit up.
“You’re a genius!” he said and he turned back to walk to the girls.
“Yeah, I know I am.” Wentworth said laughing as they walked back over.
“We can go.” They both said in unison and the girls squealed and kissed their boys.
“Thank you.” They said in unison as the boys bought the tickets for Christmas Eve.
“We have to go shopping for outfits for the opera. We will see you boys back at the villa.” Kat said and the girls kissed their boys goodbye and they ran off to go shopping.
“Now, let’s go inside and talk to the managers of the theater about your proposal.” Wentworth said dragging Orlando into the theater. They found someone cleaning the floors and went up to them.
“Excuse me; we would like to speak to the managers of the theater.” Wentworth said and the woman grumbled and got up and went into an office off to the side. A man with salt and pepper hair came out with his grey eyes sparkling at tourists.
“Bonjour gentlemen, I am Jean-Claude, the manager here. How can I help you?” He asked coming over and shaking their hands.
“I am Orlando Bloom and this is Wentworth Miller. We would like to know if we could use the stage after the show on Christmas Eve, so I can propose to my girlfriend.” Orlando said and Jean-Claude got a strange look on his face.
“It is not my place to let you use the stage, I don’t own the stage, and this is not my theater.” Jean-Claude said and Wentworth and Orlando looked at each other confused.
“Whose is it?” Wentworth asked.
“The phantom’s.” Jean-Claude whispered and Orlando looked skeptical and Wentworth laughed.
“You’re not serious are you?” Wentworth said and then a chilling dark laugh echoed through the whole lobby and a letter dropped to the floor with the infamous skull seal on it. Orlando’s jaw dropped and Wentworth’s eyes grew wide.
“No, gentlemen, I am not joking. He is telling me I owe him his pay. He writes all of our music and plays, even the one based off of his legend.” Jean-Claude said and he opened the letter and read the letter, “He writes that you may use the stage as long as your girlfriend will sing. She does sing doesn’t she?” he asked and Orlando’s face grew white.
“Yes, she does.” He said.
“Good, we need a new actress and if the phantom likes her, he will demand she be cast.” Jean-Claude said and then his phone rang, “If you gentlemen will excuse me and you have the permission to use the stage after the show. Good day.” He said and he ran off with the letter to answer his phone.
“What are we getting ourselves into?” Wentworth said as they left.
“I have no idea; I just hope it won’t hurt Kat or Maggie.” Orlando said as they walked out and grabbed a cab backed to the villa.
Christmas Eve………
“Are you ladies ready yet?” Wentworth yelled up the stairs dressed in his nice tux with Orlando dressed the same and he was looking at his watch.
“We’re coming!” Maggie yelled and she and Kat walked down the stairs and the guys jaws dropped when they saw them. Maggie was dressed in a black halter top floor length gown and Kat was in a red strapless floor length gown, both had curled their hair and looked amazing. Maggie’s red hair looked vibrant against the black dress and Kat’s dark brunette hair glistened in her red dress, they both looked ready for the Opera in their gowns.
“So, what do you boys think?” Kat said smiling as she gave a small turn in her dress.
“Amazing.” Orlando and Wentworth said in unison.
“Thank you.” Maggie said as she went over and kissed Wentworth on the cheek and he smiled.
“Let’s go. We want to get good seats.” Orlando said.
“You mean it doesn’t say what seats we are in on the tickets?” Kat asked as they got in their limo to the theater.
“No, it doesn’t.” Orlando said looking at the tickets.
“Odd.” Maggie said and Wentworth just shrugged his shoulders.
Once they arrived at the Opera they were greeted by Jean-Claude.
“Welcome Sir’s and Mademoiselle’s. The owner of this theater would like me to give you his seats in box 5 as complimentary for this special evening.” Jean-Claude said and Orlando’s eyes grew wide, he knew what box 5 meant, that was the Phantom’s box and he was the owner of the theater.
“Well, that was very nice of him.” Maggie said.
“Too nice.” Wentworth said puzzled.
“What is he talking about special occasion?” Kat asked Orlando.
“Nothing love, just that it is Christmas Eve.” He said kissing her cheek and shrugging off the worry he was beginning to feel about this whole Phantom business and they walked up to box 5.
The show started and they watched in amazement and awe and the girls were in glee watching the show.
“The woman playing Christine is a little old if you ask me.” Maggie whispered and Orlando felt the worry grow in his stomach again, that is why he wants them to make Kat sing after the show so they can bring her up on stage, they need a new Christine.
“The man playing Raoul is also a little old too.” Wentworth whispered.
“But the man playing the Phantom is doing an excellent job, he is a brilliant actor.” Kat whispered.
“I’m not so sure he is an actor.” Orlando said under his breath.
“What did you say?” Kat whispered.
“Nothing, just that the make-up job on the Phantom is great too. It looks real enough.” He whispered back and he squeezed her hand and she smiled.
“Thank you for buying these tickets for us.” Kat whispered and she kissed his lips quickly and went back to watching the show. Orlando looked down on the stage pushing his worries away knowing that the Phantom wasn’t real, but those fears came back when he noticed the Phantom was watching them from the stage and he ran off stage from the scene. After the show, Orlando and Wentworth took the girls up on stage.
“This is our surprise for tonight, we get a private tour of the theater.” Orlando said as they walked up on stage.
“Oh, guys this is wonderful, thank you.” Maggie said as she kissed Wentworth.
“Who is giving us the tour?” Kat asked.
“Well, we are doing it just by ourselves.” Orlando said as he ran a hand through his hair.
“God, it is so amazing up here, I feel like I could sing.” Kat said and Wentworth looked at Orlando and he nodded his head. If he was going to be able to go through with this whole surprise he was going to have to let her sing for the Phantom. He didn’t want to but he knew he had to.
“Well, why don’t you. Sing a song from the play.” Orlando said as he wrapped his arms around Kat’s waist.
“No, I was just kidding.” Kat said.
“No, Kat you have a beautiful voice, sing.” Maggie said.
“Yeah, love, come on sing for me.” Orlando whispered in her ear and she smiled.
“Alright, I will sing.” Kat said and she cleared her throat. Then she began to sing
Think of me
think of me fondly,
when we've said goodbye.
Remember me
once in a while -
please promise me
you'll try.
When you find
that, once
again, you long
to take your heart back
and be free -
if you
ever find
a moment,
spare a thought
for me
We never said
our love
was evergreen,
or as unchanging
as the sea -
but if
you can still
remember
stop and think
of me . . .
During this whole time Orlando stood very close to Kat and all the sudden he felt like someone was watching them and he looked up and saw the Phantom up in the cat walk up in the lights smiling as he watched her sing. He saw Orlando and nodded his head at him, approval in her singing and letting him know they could wander the theater. Then he grabbed his cloak and disappeared. Orlando felt himself grow cold all the sudden in worry for Kat and for Maggie.
Think of all the things
we've shared and seen -
don't think about the things
which might have been . . .
Think of me,
think of me waking,
silent and
resigned.
Imagine me,
trying too hard
to put you
from my mind.
Recall those days
look back
on all those times,
think of the things
we'll never do -
there will
never be
a day, when
I won't think
of you . .
“Ok, that’s enough of that, no more of me singing.” Kat said and everyone laughed as they clapped.
“Oh shut up, you have a beautiful voice.” Maggie said and then she turned to Wentworth, “Can we go tour now? Please?” She asked.
“Sure, we will let Orlando and Kat tour themselves.” He said and he winked at Orlando.
“This is so amazing Orlando, thank you for getting us up here.” Kat said as she walked over to him and kissed him on the cheek.
“It was nothing. Kat there is something I need to ask you.” He said and he pulled out the little blue box out of his pocket and got down on one knee, “Kathleen, I love you so much and want nothing more that to be with you for the rest of my life. You are the most perfect person for me and I want to be with you forever, so will you Kathleen Williams, marry me?” He asked as she began to cry and he opened the box to reveal the pear cut 3 stone diamond engagement ring.
“Yes, Yes!” Kat said softly then almost shouting it and he slipped the ring on her finger and kissed her deeply and passionately on the lips. He then picked her up after they had kissed and spun her around.
“I love you.” They both whispered to each other and they kissed again but Kat pulled away at a mesmerizing sound. It was a sound of a music box.
“Do you hear that?” Kat asked.
“Hear what?” Orlando asked worried.
“That music box, it is like the exact same one from the play. I wonder where it is coming from.” Kat said as she began to walk away to find the location of the beautiful music.
“Kat! Wait!” Orlando called after her and she found the music box in a giant dressing room and once she walked in the door closed. And she jumped and turned around and no one was there. Then she noticed the long wall mirror on the opposite wall and looked closer at it and she saw a man on the other side of the room next to the door.
“Don’t be frightened.” He said and Kat gasped as she turned around.
“No, it’s just I didn’t see you when I came in.” She said, the man was dressed in the Phantom’s costume, mask and all, “You must be Erik, the brilliant actor who played the Phantom tonight, you are amazing.” Kat said walking closer to him.
“Thank you and you must be that lovely girl whose fiancé had asked to let you and your friends tour my theater.” He said waking forward to her.
“Yes, my name is Kathleen Williams and thank you so much for letting us tour your theater, I didn’t know you owned the theater.” Kat said and he smiled.
“Yes, I do and I heard you singing tonight and I would like to hear you sing some more and maybe offer you a job as actress in my theater.” He said.
“Oh that would be lovely, but I should get back to my fiancé and my friends.” Kat said.
“No, it will only take a second. Here let me take you to my office.” He said as he took her hand and led her through the mirror.
“Kat! Wait! KAT!” Orlando yelled through the door as he tried to get through but the door was locked.
“Orlando! What’s wrong?” Maggie yelled running over with Wentworth.
“Kat, she is in there with the Phantom, she might be down in his lair by now. She heard his music box and went in there and then the door was shut and locked closed.” Orlando said as he leaned against the door.
“You mean the Phantom is real?” Maggie said shocked and with a glint in her eyes.
“Yes, I didn’t believe it at first the other day when he dropped his letter but now I believe.” Wentworth said.
“He played himself in the show tonight, he kept watching us.” Orlando said.
“Oh dear God.” Maggie said as she stared at the door in shock and fear and some glee.

Wentworth Miller vs. Channing TatumSee, they are one confusing pair, let me tell you. Pfft, you'd think actors wouldn't seem like they're long-lost cousins, but noooo....
