Author's Name: Elizabeth (SpanishEvenstar)
Rating: Mostly PG-13. I don't know if I'd ever want to write a sex scene, but you never know. So for "just in case" purposes, it may end up R. Doubtful, but you never know. :P
Genre: Romance/Chick Lit (because girls love reading about dysfunctional rich people)
Main Character(s): Tatiana Lewis, Olivia Perkins, Trevor Brooks, Brandon Rogers, Bailey Janowicz, Ian & Claire Brooks.
Disclaimer: I based this fic on the TV show The O.C. Hate on it all you will, but come on, you love watching dysfunctional rich people. :D All the characters are mine. The Hamptons is NOT mine, but then again, I never really state where exactly they live, do I? ;) Actually, I shouldn't even say this fic is "based" off of the show. It just inspired me to write it. That said, everything's my idea, and mine alone. Any resemblance to people living or dead is entirely coincidental.
Chapter 1
"Why does she always feel the need to call me at this ungodly hour?" groaned Tatiana Lewis as she turned to face the alarm clock with the blaring red numbers from her bed. "Yeah" by Usher rang from the cellphone and the ringtone still made her laugh. You had to give me that tone to use. Grabbing the phone from her bedside table she flipped it open and answered.
"What is it, Liv?"
"Oh my GOD, Anya! You are NOT going to believe this!" came the voice on the other side.
"Dammit, Liv, you KNOW I'm not awake at this time of day during the summer," Tatiana replied, ignoring her best friend's announcement.
"You know I don't care."
"True. So what is this that's going on that you absolutely HAD to tell me about? And wake me up to do it?"
"DUDE. Bailey has a cousin moving into town."
"Bailey?"
"Yeah. As in Bailey-whatever-her-last-name-is. She has a cousin. He's from California, and he's supposed to be sexy. According to Bailey."
"Ew! He's her COUSIN!"
"I know. But whatever, we know how that skank has good taste in guys."
"I still don't see what this has to do with me. I'm with Josh, remember?"
"I thought you'd at least like to know. I mean, as reigning social queen, you deserve to know about the fresh meat that's going to be available in a couple weeks at school."
"Ugh, don't remind me."
"Sorry. Anyway, are we still on for tonight?"
"Why? What's going on tonight?" Ah. That was it. Tatiana slapped her forehead. "DUH! Bailey's party."
"Uh-huh. You know how it's so much fun to crash those keggers."
"Olivia..."
"It's true, man! You know how Bailey's dad always leaves his wine cellar open, and Josh always brings the brewskies."
"I need to get him to stop that."
"Good luck with that one, babe. You know Josh won't quit anything."
"I do." There was a pause. "Listen, Liv, since I'm up now (no thanks to you), I'm going to get something to eat and we can head out to the city later. Sound good?"
"Sure, whatever. My place or yours?"
"I'll meet you over there."
"Cool. See ya in ten."
"Right." Tatiana flipped her phone shut. She found it so hard to believe the lengths her best friend went to in order to seemingly make Tatiana's "job" as social queen easier. She smiled. Olivia could have the new guy. After all, she had Josh.
--------------------
Olivia was always shocked at the amount of money she spent in the city. Not that money was tight in her family or anything, but did she really need two pairs of Manolos and two peasant tops?
"I cannot believe you actually bought those shoes, Liv. I wish I could spend like you," her best friend Tatiana remarked, fishing through her bag.
"No, you don't," Olivia replied, yanking her bag away from her friend and sitting down on a bench right inside Central Park. "You DON'T wish you could spend like me. I honestly don't need these." She opened the box and turned the pumps around in the light. "They are sexy, though!" she laughed.
"All I bought was a dress and the sandals. I hate the fact that I can't spend money."
"Shut up. You have like, the richest parents in New York. Get over yourself." Tatiana hung her head. Olivia stared up at the slightly overcast sky. "Suppose we should get home." Tatiana nodded and stood. They rushed to Grand Central Station where they were to catch the train back to Long Island and hopefully arrive in time to crash Bailey Janowicz's party.
Olivia was too preoccupied with the thought of perhaps seeing Bailey's hot cousin at the estate. She deserved him, she just knew it. Sure, she didn't know him at all...he could be the male version of her archnemesis. But she wasn't about to let her track record of being single since the day she was born ruin her chances with this guy. She was going to hunt him down. She smiled to herself as she stared at herself in Tatiana's mirror, wearing one of her brand-new tops. Her eyes darted to the window, where she could see into the adjacent house; the Brookses'. Whatever she thought she saw there had disappeared.
"Tatiana?" Olivia asked, keeping an eye on the window.
"Yeah?" replied Tatiana, calling from the walk-in closet.
"What's up with the family next door? Are they like...perverts or something?"
"Nah. It's just the Brookses. You probably saw Trevor or one of his friends. Perfectly harmless."
"I see." Olivia did a twice-over with her makeup, and grabbed her Guess purse. "I'm ready." Tatiana smiled from the door.
"I see that. And I have no idea what I want to wear." Olivia rolled her eyes and whisked the brand-new dress her friend had just bought and held it out to her.
"How about this." It was more of a statement than a question, and Tatiana caught on immediately.
"Right." Tatiana smiled weakly and took the dress. She slipped it on over her jeans and grabbed a Vuitton from her closet. "Okay. Let's go crash the kegger that Bailey's throwing and invited my boyfriend to. Without inviting me."
"Us, Anya. She didn't invite us," Olivia corrected. They smiled at each other and left the house.
------------------------
"Okay, man, so when are you finally going to get off your lazy ass and lay it on the girl?" Kyle demanded, setting aside his bass. The girl in the room across the yard had disappeared through the curtain.
"I don't know, man. I don't think she'll ever like me as it is," replied Trevor, fiddling with his pick.
"She can't like you if you don't talk to her," explained Bryan. He played a beat on the drum set.
"Yeah, well..." Trevor's voice trailed off.
"She's probably going to Bailey Janowicz's party tonight. Should a be a real raver!" Bryan's eyes gleamed as he spoke. Trevor rolled his eyes.
"Alcohol's disgusting. Besides, I wasn't invited."
"Apparently they weren't either." Kyle pointed to the house.
"I don't know..."
"DUDE. It's your senior year of high school. If you don't get her now, you'll never get her." Trevor realized the truth in his friend's voice. After this he'd never see Olivia Perkins again. But maybe that was a good thing, right?
"Maybe that's a good thing." Trevor spoke his thoughts aloud and was responded with a punch on the arm from Kyle.
"That's it. You're going to this party even if we have to force you. I'm sure Bailey won't even know we're there." Bryan seemed proud of his deduction.
"Yeah, but--"
"Shut up, Trev. Lay off the shy emo-geek attitude. You know I can say that because I AM an emo-geek." Trevor snickered.
"Dude, you're Straight Edge. SO not emo-geek," retorted Trevor mischievously.
"Well now that you're smiling, you're coming with us. Kyle and I have a plan to avoid your 'rents. Now, let's get you off to this party so that Olivia can finally acknowledge your existence." And with that, Ryan pushed Trevor out into the foyer of the huge house. The adult Brookses could be avoided for the time being. Sneaking in may be the problem. But Trevor couldn't help realize that he was out of the house on a summer evening before school started. Normally the band would be taking up this time, but it seemed as though the constant peeks through the curtains while searching for Olivia Perkins who was spending the day with Tatiana Lewis, Trevor's next-door neighbor, was beginning to irritate his friends. This was a party. There would be drinking, provided by Tatiana's boyfriend and Bailey's father...and probably lots of hot sex in the numerous bedrooms of the Janowicz's estate (which of course Trevor would have no part in). It was your typical high school rave party in a mansion. On Long Island. Another excuse to be picked on by football players, perhaps smashed against the refrigerator or something, and another excuse to be labeled. It was bound to happen. But...it would be the chance of a lifetime to show himself to the girl of his dreams--the girl he'd wanted since the first day of kindergarten. He had to let her know.
------------------------
"Oh my God, this party is swingin'!" cried Olivia as she entered the door of the Janowicz mansion.
"It's just like every other party, Liv," Tatiana sulked. "I'm going to try to find Josh."
"Okay, babe. I'll meet you up front in a couple hours. Too much alcohol makes me nauseous." Tatiana laughed and found Josh hanging around some cheerleaders.
"There you are, baby!" he exclaimed. "I didn't know you'd be here!" he exclaimed, holding up a bottle of Budweiser in her direction. Tatiana rolled her eyes.
"Don't act so surprised. You knew as well as anyone I'd come whether I was invited or not." Josh's eyes turned away from her.
"You really shouldn't be here, Anya."
"I know. But last I checked you were still my boyfriend. And I was still your girlfriend. And as much of a shocker as this may seem to you, I'd like to keep it that way. I don't like it when you're invited to parties and I'm not. I have no idea what went on this summer, but I love you, Josh. I want to try and work things out. I want to be with you." She looked into his eyes as he said it. His dark brown hair fell over his face and he pulled it back, exposing his brilliant blue eyes. They smiled down at her.
"I love you too, Anya." He wrapped her in an embrace and let go as she pressed her chin to his chest, looking up at him. She smiled, and he kissed her forehead.
"Oh, God, would somebody get that freak off of the coffee table?" shrieked Bailey, trying to be heard above the blaring rap music coming from her surround sound. "Tatiana Lewis," she continued, catching a glimpse of the intruder.
"Bailey Janowicz." Bailey gave Tatiana a rude look, and Tatiana reciprocated the gesture.
"What do I have to do to let you know that you're not welcome at my parties?"
"You can start by not asking my boyfriend to bring the booze." Tatiana grabbed Josh's hand and led him into the den, where there was an intense game of Madden 2006 being played. Josh sat down on the leather wrap-around sofa and set Tatiana on his lap and they began to kiss passionately.
"Aw, God, do you HAVE to have the PDA?" whined Jensen, one of Josh's football friends. Tatiana looked over and giggled, and went back to Josh.
-------------------
Out of the corner of her eye, Olivia spotted him. He was tall, blonde-haired, with the kind of nose that could be spotted a mile away. She liked it. Always known for being the take-charge type, she sauntered over to where he was filling up a cup with fountain beer from the bar.
"You must be Bailey's cousin," she said, taking a seat on a stool. He stared at her with a pair of one of the bluest eyes she'd ever seen. He nodded.
"Brandon Rogers." He stuck his hand out for Olivia to shake. She held out her own and let loose her mega-watt smile.
"Olivia Perkins. You need help finding anything around here, I'll be glad to offer my services," she said. Brandon just stared at her. "You're from California, right?" Brandon nodded.
"Bay area. San Francisco."
"I see. What are you doing with Bailey? I mean...I know she's your cousin and all, but frankly, she's a bitch. No offense."
"None taken. My parents are having issues and they shipped me out here because Bailey's parents have money. It sucks here. No offense." Olivia took a step back and turned away from him. She didn't know how to cope with dysfunctional families. Sure, her parents were divorced, but it wasn't like they shipped her off to her relatives at the first sign of trouble.
That was when the bumbling emo kid came up to her.
"Who the hell are you?" she demanded.
"You aren't going to get her," he slurred, pointing at Brandon. Olivia turned.
"What the--"
"Olivia--"
"What's your problem, man?" someone shouted, stepping out of the crowd. Olivia thought he was one of the football players.
"I--I--GODDAMMIT." The skinny kid stood there, shaking. He'd put all his last energies into fighting off the football player that he could hardly stand any longer. Olivia could tell he was somewhat drunk. Brandon rushed out from behind the bar just as the kid passed out on the floor.
"I guess shy kids shouldn't drink and mack at the same time," laughed Josh, who stood at the entrance to the den with Tatiana next to him. The rest of the group laughed with him, except for Brandon and Olivia. She noticed he was looking right at her best friend. He turned to face the passed-out kid, and helped his friends take him outside.
"That was strange," Olivia told herself. Was he trying to hit on her or something? She'd grown up with the kid...at least, she thought she did. He used to be a lot skinnier though....
-----------------------
"You about ready to go, babe?" asked Tatiana, walking up to Olivia, who looked more confused than shaken. Olivia nodded.
"This is one lame-ass party."
"They all are! I did fix things up with Josh, though. At least I think I did." Tatiana never did feel too secure about the ways she and Josh made up. They usually involved excessive apologizing and making out. A sinking feeling appeared in her stomach as she realized that she and Josh may not be the power couple that everyone made them out to be.
She had caught the eye of the new kid, though. She assumed he was Bailey's cousin. And for the record...he was very good-looking.
Why oh why has no one replied to this? Everyone going blind or what?
Okay, I like it. Dialgue's good. Establishing setting and the like, good, relastioonships, yes, good. I can definitely see your influences in there, but I'm not quite feeling your style of yet, give us more. There are little things as a writer you can play with, like tagging your dialogue, different ways you can do that, and how you can allow your action, description and dialogue to play off one another. It's early in this tale to know exacvtly where you're taking it, but you've stared off your characterisation well. Definitely has potential.
Everyone read this thing, so we get more of it!
