Title: How long should a story update be?
Description: In your opinion...

hey there,

I was thinking. How long do you like your updates? 2000 Words - is that too long? Is it nicer to read shorter stuff? Or do you prefer a long chapter - even if that means less frequent updates? How do you tend to do it and what do like reading most?

that's it :)

Laila

Most of mine are under or around 1000. I really don't mind how long it is, as long as I have time to read it. I think it all depends on the style of the writer and the story. There are some that tell their stories in little snippits and others that go through all the pieces. Sometimes either is better.

I guess this was a totally redundant post, then!

At the risk of sounding a bit snobbish, I think that an update should be around or above 1000. Not that that's the cut off of perfection or any silly thing like that; but honestly, something of substance should happen in an update y'know? And I don't at all mind having to wait for quality work :) Totally worth it (though I do love updates, haha).

I can also totally understand a pretty long chapter being split into a few shorter parts, because- let's face it- most of us don't really have a ton of time to sit down and read a massive chapter (incredibly written or no).

Then again, there are always exceptions :) So there that is ^_^

I agree with Sammi, I think it depends on the style and flow of the story, and on how much happens in one chapter. sometimes you just have a short interlude of only one page or so, and for me that is just as good as a 5 or 10 pages chapter. I've seen it all and I can't real ysay I prefer either way. The only thing is that if a chapter is longer, it may take me longer to read, but that's a different story. But between 1,000 and 2,000 words would be my average, so I vote for that

*lol* The reason I am asking it is because I am not sure myself.

My chapters tend to be around 2000 words, for one because I really feel accomplished after writing that much and I usually try to make every chapter important to the plot - but you also need characterisation (show and not just tell) and that takes time... a well-rounded chapter is more then a random break in the story.

And I do enjoy longer chapters at other stories, even though I agree it can be intimidating, especially catching up!

I agree with Laila, I love lengthy updates.

Though when I write I use various lenghts.... some chapters are long, others are average and some just plain short.
I do believe that you can accomplish a lot with a short chappie.
And I do not mind waiting a bit for a chapter.

I have always been a huge sucker for long chapters, with deep insights of the characters and actions described correctly, so that one coould feel within the story and within the head of the characters themselves.

Now, I must be honest, I totally miss the old times: work has taken over me, and I find it really hard to get to the end of one single chapter, everytime I try to approach one, meaning that either procrastinate my reading to the next day paragraph per paragraph, or I get scared from the very beginning and ssave the chapter on my computer telling myself that I will print it out and read it during weekends, ending then up with being always late on updates and stories...

SHAME ON ME, I know, but I do miss old good times when Ursi could spend hours in front of the PC and get lost within the words of the wonderful stories this site hosts...
