Title: Try 17
Description: Utter crap or misjudged brilliance?
Laila - November 29, 2003 07:48 PM (GMT)
Hey there!
Try 17, the bloody movie that we will never see in cinema...
and by right??
I have heard (and read) many, who would agree to that...
have you seen it?
Well I have, and I didn't find it crap at all!
Rather a very interesting, slightly crazy metaphoric - but great!
*lol* ok, 'cept for some quite disturbing scenes with a slightly aged woman ;)
:eeek:
But sweet Elijah in a great role, a teenanger who grows up...
well something I still have to do appearantly...
hug
Laila

Haven't seen it yet, but my friend's gonna get it next week!
I hope it's not as utterly boring as the completely hideous Ash Wednesday, but then I guess it's pretty hard to surpass that one in boredom..
Anywho, am quite looking forward to a certain scene in which Elijah does X-rated things..
Oh my God sometimes I wish I were less pervy..
Margriet - November 29, 2003 08:30 PM (GMT)
I haven't seen it yet, not sure if I want to see him 'grow up'. Hahaha.
:P
ninque elen - December 3, 2003 03:17 PM (GMT)
Hehehehe.....I have seen it
*grins at laila*
And I thought it was a pretty good movie.....cept for the disturbing scenes with the slightly aged woman who abused Lij for real to :cry2:  :cry2:
Still I think it's a fantastic movie and I surely don't understand why it was never released in cinema's. Lij plays his role with utter brilliance!!
WhiteAndie - December 3, 2003 07:01 PM (GMT)
I want to see it! i mean, I've always believe it's quite interesting ... i like the actors in it ... (yeah, Franka is a good actress, even if i don't really like her) I like Mandy (yeah... i know, but i do like her lol) and Elijah ... lol and the theme... sounds quitei nteresting ... at least better than some of the teen movies that had reach into the cinema... don't you think?
Whatever... here in Mexico? Nah... seems to be sooo far away the day it's going to be on video... i guess i'll have to wait until i go to USA to buy the dvd... lol
luv  ANdie!
Kaylee Ann - December 7, 2003 06:50 PM (GMT)
I'd like to see it, but, sadly, it will probably never be released in this town. Although, I thought that about Ash Wednesday and it appeared one day! So, who knows!
Lessy - December 8, 2003 04:41 AM (GMT)

sammy - December 8, 2003 05:34 PM (GMT)
i actually watched it today! yes, indeed i did. and i must say that i actually liked it, something that i didn't expect at all.
elijah acted brilliantly and i'm so proud of him that he didn't throw up after doing that hideous scene with the "aged" woman who could've been his grandmother. there were two scenes i didn't like though, cause they seemed a bit fake really.
first one: where elijah suddenly gives franka a kiss at their first outing at the horse race. it was a bit bad and cliche.
second one: where elijah had just read the typed up letter from his mother and opened the window to scream out his anger. cliche.
other then that, i laughed my ass off at his attempt of kissing mandy at the very beginning. it was just scary! but later on he became better, thankfully.
i liked the story plot. something different, but it seems elijah likes to act in different kind of movies.
Ryvyan - December 8, 2003 05:56 PM (GMT)
I realized that both Orlando and Elijah have acted in films where they have sex with someone who can be their grandma
Elijah in 'Try 17',
Orlando as a rentboy in 'Midsomer Murders'.
.JuLEs. - December 9, 2003 10:33 PM (GMT)
Its actually called "All I Want" in the movie stores here.
I saw it twice, its really not bad. Questionable at times (his imaginations), but still very entertaining.
I just love the part when hes on the motorcycle with those big sunglasses and then it dies. Hilarious, and he just looks so darn adorable!
Luurv,
Jules
CatwomanWBB - December 10, 2003 05:55 AM (GMT)
All I Want was not the best movie Elijah ever did, nor was it his worst. It was very cute, and it was a way for Lij to stretch himself into a more adult theme. No where close to being X rated. She was topless and he was in only his boxers. He needed a role like this under his belt.
Franka being 8 or 9 years older than Lij hardly qualifies her as a grandma. I read in a Canadian magazine that the slap she delivers was totally impromptu. Observe the reactions of the people around them. She damn near knocks him off his feet. :o
I's definately worth a look see. :yay:
sammy - December 10, 2003 01:46 PM (GMT)
it's not franka we're calling grandma, but what's her name.. the 'Ma' where he buys his furniture. yep, she's the grandma
CatwomanWBB - December 10, 2003 02:34 PM (GMT)
I stand corrected.
Yep she was a grandma all right, but I found that scene hysterical.
It didn't look like he minded TOO much. ;)2
Frodo Lives! - December 11, 2003 12:12 AM (GMT)
hey all :)
I haven't yet seen the movie (try explaining to your husband why you want to see a movie with Elijah in it...) but the "grandma" you talk about is none other than Deborah Harry, the singer called "Blondie" in the 80's!
A little trivia for those of you born a little earlier than the 80s... :yay:
dani_moonstar - December 12, 2003 03:09 AM (GMT)
i will rent it next week...im kinda intrigued by this aged woman thingy....

Yeah... I saw it too... I saw it as "All I want", though, so I didn't recognize the title of this post for a while. I'm not sure exactly if I liked it. I think I did... It's one of those movies that makes me say "uhmm..". It was a bit odd, for sure. That's why it never went to theaters, probably. Movies typically, now, are so predictable. It's sad really, you watch about 10 minutes, and you don't need to watch anymore, because you know exactly what's gonna happen. Go watch How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. Yeah, I thought that movie was funny, but come on. You know exactly how it ends five minutes after the opening credits roll. All I Want isn't like that, and that's good. And, personally, I thought the things in his imagination were hilarious. But yes, I was disturbed by the old woman... Well, caught between disturbed and amused... So I guess, while it wasn't the type of thing I usually like to watch, I did like it. It was original, at least, and Elijah's performance was great.
Lessy - December 28, 2003 11:37 AM (GMT)
I saw a pic of Mandy in this movie....she looks like she on drugs. Franka looks cool. I mean now I don't wanna see this movie, cuz I saw the tealier (sp?)...
^_^
Don't get me wrong are anything.....but It doesn't look so good
~*Opal_Imp*~ - December 28, 2003 08:45 PM (GMT)
Yeah, Mandy Moore is kinda scary in it... And Franka is cool in it... Not the best movie ever, but worth renting or something, anyhow. If nothing else, because it's original. It's not the greatest, but it's worth watching... ^^;
justbishop - January 4, 2004 10:18 PM (GMT)
I would say that the only compelling reason to see it is just so you can say you've seen Elijah in it. I though that the plot was weak, and the characters were cliche. It really was one of those movies that make you go "that's it?" It also kinda makes you think about all the great stuff yo could've done during the time that you spent watching it
I tend not to gravitate towards a movie soley on it's "indie" cred. Big budget blockbusters are fine with me too...It's the story that matters, either way. Does it catch me? Do I like the characters? Do I care what ends up happening to them?
Anyway, I got the same feeling from "All I Want" that I got from "The Rules of Attraction." That numb feeling that makes me wonder why I wasted my time.
Laila - January 4, 2004 11:28 PM (GMT)
Well that feeling I got from Ash Wednesday..
well actually I never finished it because i couldn't stand the bordom anymore...
I guess I liked Try 17 because I could relate in a way...
And well... it was less chlichee then most movies about teenager around...
expecially the popular ones.
I loved when he said "Shut up and drive" to Franka in the end, that was so... droolable ;)
and I don't think he's a clichee character... *pouts*
He is an irreal character yeah, eggagerated, metphored... but not chlichee....
*shrugs
~*Opal_Imp*~ - January 5, 2004 07:18 AM (GMT)
I'm still kind of torn... I think I liked it. I don't think it was cliche... Go watch Bring it On or She's All That. (Though, acctually, I liked She's All That). There's cliche. I thought All I Want (er, Try 17 - whatever) was acctually pretty original. Strange, maybe... but I still this it's worth a watch. I never saw Ash Wednesday, for the sheer fact everyone has said it was boring... But I know Try 17 wasn't as boring as people say Ash Wednesday is... My one word summary for the movie is, "Um?" Overall, I guess I'm glad I rented it, but I don't wanna buy it.
Flamin - January 13, 2004 05:30 PM (GMT)
I've been trying to d/l it for 2/3 weeks, have about 40 minutes so far.
It seems... I dunno, funny but a little surreal? Not exactly original but better than some(that have been mentioned). Nasty 'to be' joke near the start was a bit of a disapointment and Mandy Moore's acting really not helping much(could she be more wooden?) but IMO ELijahs ok so far... and the scene with him in his undwear is a nice bonus(that few mins have got alot of use here :lalala: ).

Yeah I pray it's not........
:kaboom: About Ash Wednesday- Yeah I know!! **goes into a fit** AHH!! The only good thing there was Elijah... And I don't even think Elijah made me happy... Sure the whole "guns and Elijah" thing was sexy but COME ON!! **sighs** Oh well....
Ps: :meh: Don't worry I am too......
Reannon - January 31, 2004 01:48 AM (GMT)
Wow...now I really really want to see this movie...even after all the not so good things said about it! I'm truly intrigued...guess I'll have to make a trip to Blockbuster...
I love weird movies...but NOT "Pi" - that was waaaaaaaaaay too disturbing  (sorry..off topic, not an Elijah movie - thank goodness)
Reannon - February 16, 2004 07:36 PM (GMT)
Okay...saw this yesterday. Liked the scene with the country music and the roomate. Overall I liked the movie...but I'm not sure I want to see it again. The end kind of made me go "um?"...how did that magically happen? He does amazing things with his eyes and eyebrows in the movie.
Good movie to see so you can say you saw more of his work than just LotR, Deep Impact and The Faculty...

I own All I Want/Try 17....My mummy got it for me for Christmas. it was pretty funny, she said she was about to get me daredevil, but then she saw Elijah's face on the box and was like, well, maybe Amber might like this. And I hadn't even told her I wanted to see it, even though I had just put it on our rent list. I actually really liked it, even if my initial reason for watching it was to see Lij in a more risk-ay role. It was a bit odd, but that's what made it great. But Franka's a man...so...yea. Lij was hella funny in it though. He reminded me of me with all the crazy scenarios. Oh another thing I realized was that this was the second time Elizabeth Perkins has played his mother(first was avalon). it was like a family reunion..lol. Anyways, just wanted to ssay I saw the movie and that I own it and sometimes, if I have to sleep on the couch, I put it on so I can go to sleep with the sound of elijah's voice drifting into my head like a sweet lullaby. Is that weird??
 Amber
lovingtheblueeyedangel - March 6, 2004 07:08 PM (GMT)
Not weird at all ambies hun. I rented all i want/try seventeen + i found myself constantly laughing. I must have looked drunk or something cos my sister came in the room halfway through sat down. saw me laughing uncontrolably then she left. she was in the room less than ten seconds. The old lady 'blondie' scene was...disturbing. Elijah with a gun=very sexy! :yum: Elijah in boxers=extremly sexy! I'm crazy. I loved Elijah's performance. He was excellent. I thought mandy moore performance was very good. Franka potente's performance wasn't as good as the rest. But she still did well in that role.
Jaime Girl - March 8, 2004 12:20 PM (GMT)
I have to say I wasn't impressed. It kinda made me cringe a little at some of the thinly disguised cliches, although Deborah Harry was AWESOME!!!! lol Go the 80's chicks!! hehe Seriously though, I'm with JB. I got to the end and went "Okay...well then." Elijah had no chemistry at all with the actress that played his mother, Elizabeth something...I can't remember for the life of me her last name right now...and I thought his character was a little TOO naive. And yeah (dare I say it) I thought it was "indie" just for the sake of being indie. Like the writer was more focused on the idea of being original, rather than actually BEING original. That didn't make sense...bedtime now! lol

ALL I GOTTA SAY IS, FRANKA POTENTE IS A GODDESS!!!
And Elijah of course is her Angel.. I loved this movie.. It's so much him, as it is what he mostly thinks.. If you look deeper at it, I bet there's a bit of Elijah in that boy he plays. I guess that's why he went for the role.
Overall, I really liked this film. I even have it on DVD.. It has two of my favorites.. Franka Potente, and of course Elijah.
WhiteAndie - September 8, 2004 12:20 AM (GMT)
I have to admit that while I was in Dallas with my aunt, after realizing that that movie was totally lost between all the movies that'll never arrive to mexico, I decided to buy it (it was on sale, so it helped)
I had to watch it without my little cousin sneaking around, the R rated was enough and the fact that Elijah was having or wanted or tried to have sex with a woman lot older than him, not a very good education for my little cousin.
ANyway, I liked it, I mean it wasn't a bad buy, it was on sale and it was nice and indie... ELijah's character made me think that he was kind of stupid, or slow, I guess the second one was better for the description. He was soo slow to understand things!!
Mandy Moore's character was totally a cliche, at the same as Franka's. Classic prom queen wannabe star and the classic mysterious older girl who is silent and foreign (believe me! that's cliche! I know it!). Franka's bf, another cliche...
I loved the first floor's neighbor!! He was so funny and when Elijah and he were talking about not having sex in 3 years, and Elijah said: try 17, I was laughing so hard! Thatwas funny ... :P
Somehow I liked ELijah's character, he was naive and he was cute when he tried to do whatever the promqueen a.k.a mandy moore wanted.
And for the last ... I guess the idea was cool, but somehow the cliches just come out, it was funny but mostly because Elijah's character was too slow and that made me laugh (it was kind of cute, I've to admit), the music is awesome, Martina Sorbara's Bonnie and Clyde (Elijah and Franka's scene) is one of my favorite songs ever!
SO, I guess you'd rent it, maybe not buy it unless you find a sale like me (two dvds for 7 dolars!) LOL

I saw this movie awhile ago so I don't really remember a lot of it, but I do want to get it.
Elijah and Franka's little sex scene was the best. I looooooove the Bonnie and Clyde song. :yay:
