~*~Prologue~*~

Katerina Knightley steps out of the tub after a long, hot bath. She needed it. She needed the refreshment that the hot water could give to her aching muscles. She was a 25-year-old 4th grade school teacher, living in New York. Taking hot baths is a requirement. She pins up her wet hair, scrubbing her nightly facial crème onto her smooth, bronze skin. Another requirement of hers. “You know, I really think we should take a trip out to Cali during Christmas. The whole ‘White Christmas’ thing is getting a little old don’t you think?” There was no answer from her husband. “We wouldn’t have to spend money on a hotel. We could stay with my friend, Daphne. She has plenty of space. And she adores Emily.” There was still no answer. She sighed, rolling her eyes. “Fine, Pooper,” she mumbled to herself.

After her nightly facial treatment, she put on her soft pink nightgown that stopped at her calves and turned off the bathroom light, walking out and closing the door behind her. She took a quick look around the room. Jack wasn’t even in there. “Jack? Where are you?”

Minutes passed before her husband answered her. “Shhhh,” he says, creeping into the room. “I just put Emily down. Try not to make any sound or….breathe.” He pulls back the covers with his wife, climbing into bed with her. “I’m hoping to get at least one hour of sleep tonight.” He jokes. “What about you? Are you going to push for 30 minutes?” Smiling, he leans over, kissing her soft lips.

Kat chuckled, reaching behind her and turning off her lamp. She wraps her arms around Jack, pulling him close. “I’m shooting for 20.”

***
He had the bluest of eyes. They were dark pools of ocean and narrowed. He had been watching that window for an hour now. They were asleep. He knew it. He takes a puff on his Marlboro before dropping it on the ground, stepping on it. He walked briskly up to the house. What a perfect little cottage with its perfect white fence, perfect lawn, perfect door, and perfect windows. It was sickening. Masked by the bushes surrounding the house, he walked up to one of the windows on the side, pushing it up and entering into the perfect little house easily. Perfect.

He wasn’t there for jewelry. He wasn’t there for money. He was there for one thing and one thing only. “Here baby, baby, baby.”

***
Kat awoke, her body shot forward to a sitting position in the bed. The room was quiet except the pitter patter of the hard rain on the windows and her rapid beating heart. She looked over to the side. Jack wasn’t there. She pushed the heavy covers from over her body, swinging her legs over the edge of the bed. She stood up, reaching for her robe on a side chair, putting it on. She walked out of the chilly room, heading down the hallway. She looked in Emily’s room, smiling. Jack was there. “Try not to wake her. We want to get at least an hour’s sleep tonight, remember?” She whispered. She walked away from the room and down the stairs. Her body was shivering slightly from the hot and cold feeling she was getting. She always got the feeling after she had nightmares. She needed to calm down and she new exactly what would help her.

When her foot hit the carpet at the bottom of the stairs, it was wet. She furrowed her eyebrows, wondering what that wetness was from. She squinted her eyes in the dark, looking down at her feet as she walked on, following the dark puddles of liquid. What was that?

She heard a sharp noise from the side of her. She gasped, turning quickly. She reached down, clicking on the lamp on a side table. The room filled with dim light. Jack. Jack! What was he doing here? “Jack!” She ran to him, kneeling down. He moaned, his eyebrows pulling. He was leaning on the armrest of the couch, holding himself up. Blood was trickling down his body from an open wound somewhere. What had happened? Did someone do this to him? What…

“Emily!” She stood quickly, running to the stairs, climbing them quickly; as fast as her legs could take her. Someone was in the house. And he was in Emily’s room. She rounded the corner, stopping in the doorway. The man she thought was Jack wasn’t there anymore. She ran up to the crib. Emily was gone. “No!” She turned around, horror etched on her face. Tears flowing down her cheeks. Emily. Her sweet baby girl was gone.

She ran down the stairs, almost tripping over her own feet. The front door was open. She looked over at Jack. He was getting up on his own now. “Jack…Emily…she’s….” She didn’t finish her sentence. She couldn’t. She ran out the front door, down the small steps, stopping in the middle of the street. The rain immediately soaked her, lightning streaking the sky. She turned around in circles, her heart beats louder than the thunder. It felt like the world was spinning. She raised a shaky hand to her forehead, terror filling her body. Her head dropped back, her mouth opens as she lets out a horrid cry. “Emily!”

Darkness.
