Into the SunsetPrologue
Chad Michael Murray is hot, am I correct? I thought so too…I happened to meet him on the 1st day of my new job. I had recently graduated from college and was looking for a job as a make-up artist or costume designer. My drama professor recommended me to a close friend of hers. I landed a job with this friend’s company and was immediately flown out to Los Angeles to meet with her and a possible client. They asked what type of work I could do and I showed them my portfolio. They signed a contract with our company and 5 of our artists were hired. Do you know what it’s like to be signed to a company straight out of college and then your first day at the company get signed to work on a movie? Probably not…but let me tell you, it’s amazing.
3 days after we were signed I got up early because I had work today. I showered quickly and threw on my favorite jeans and my orange cookie monster shirt under a black suit jacket. I grabbed the directions out of my fax machine and was on my way. Today I was going to the set in LA to do preliminary work and find out my assignments. I was to be working mainly with the lead male character. I had to do his make-up every morning, which all it was going to be was standard make-up so it wouldn’t take too much work. I was also assigned to take his sizes and work with the head costume designer to put his outfits together. They hadn’t told me who was playing the lead though…
“Gwen, I need you to do some test colors on Chad.” Lydia Milars, the department head for make-up, said to me.
“Ummm…Chad?” was my response.
“Yeah, Chad Michael Murray, did no one tell you yet who the lead was?”
“Actually, no. But yeah, I’d be happy to do some work, just give me my work space, and a test subject…”
She smiled at me and led me down the hall. “I think you’re going to like working with us, you’ll fit in perfectly with the rest of the crew.” She said turning down another hallway.
“I hope I do. It was amazing to land this job only a week after graduating.” I said.
“I’ll bet. All right, here is your workroom, when we’re shooting at this set, you’ll be in this room. Chad should be here shortly, just set up, well you know how to work with make-up I’m sure…”
“Yes ma’am, thank you.” I said as she left. I started laying out some possible foundations and other standard make-up.
The door opened and I looked up to meet some of the most beautiful blue eyes I’ve ever seen. Chad was not bad looking…
“Hey, you must be Gwen. I’m Chad and I guess we’re going to be seeing a lot of each other on this shoot.” He said smiling at me.
‘Smile…wow’ I thought and then mentally kicked myself, ‘you can not start to like him, he’s your client.’
“Um yeah, so let’s get to work I guess. You can just sit here, and I’m sure you’re used to make-up.” I said showing him to a chair in front of the mirror and work table.
“Yes. So what’s your story? How’d you get here? You do costumes and make-up, right?”
“Yes, you’ll be working with me on a lot more than just this. So how did I get here, I had a great drama teacher in high school who taught me make-up initially. I’d always had a thing for fashion too and my college drama professor had me design the costumes for our plays. I just graduated from college and my professor recommended me to a friend and I landed a job with a great company that represents make-up artists and designers. The first day with the company I met with the reps from this movie and after looking over my file, they hired me. So here I am, 4 weeks out of college and already working for Hollywood. It’s a dream come true.” I said testing foundation shades against his hand. After finding the correct one I began to apply it.
“Wow, 4 weeks. That’s what this movie is about, dreams coming true.”
“So what’s your story? How’d you get to be here?”
“I was born and raised in Buffalo…” Chad started to say
“Oh my God, are you a Bills fan?” I asked
“Yeah, I know they suck but it’s this weird thing with Bills fans…”
“No, I understand, because I am one…” I said
“How’d you get to be a Bills fan? Are you from Buffalo?” Chad asked confused.
“No, both of my parents were born and raised there and I spent part of every summer there for like 12 years. I was actually just up there visiting my grandma.”
“That’s awesome. I rarely meet Bills fans outside of Buffalo, especially not in the business. Do you like to go to the games? Maybe we could go to one sometime…” Chad said smiling and turning to look at me.
“That sounds like fun. Now shut-up and make a fishy face so I can do your make-up.” I said doing a fishy face as an example.
“That’s a technique I’ve never heard of.” Chad said turning back and making the face.
“I told you I had a good drama teacher…ok I’m done.” I said, putting the finishing touches on and stepping back to admire my work.
“It looks very natural.” Chad said, “I normally hate wearing make-up but you’re better at this than any of my past people.”
“It’s supposed to look natural, and thanks. Now lets get a picture of it and then wash it off so we can go work on your wardrobe.” I said pulling out a Polaroid camera.
“Would you seriously go to a game with me?” Chad asked as he washed his face at the sink in the corner of the room.
“I think you and I would need to get to know each other better first…but yeah. I love football.”
“I used to play in high school, and when an injury put me in the hospital, the nurse suggested modeling to me and next thing you know, I’m a model!” he said.
I cleaned up my work station and set out all the colors I had used. “I played Powder Puff football in high school. That was fun!” I said as he walked back over to me.
“That’s when the girls play and guys cheerlead right?”
“Yup, you ready to go? We still have a bit of work to do.” I said and he nodded.
We walked down the hall to the costume room where we ran into Hilary getting fitted for some regular clothes.
“Whoa, Hilary Duff…I used to have your cd.” I said and Chad laughed at me.
“Hilary is playing leading lady opposite of me.” Chad said.
“Yeah, Chad is some big romantic sap in this movie.” Hilary said laughing and I laughed too.
"I'm Gwen by the way." I said and she shook my hand.
"Nice meeting you, I've got to be going though, make-up tests..."
"I just finished mine, have fun!" Chad said
“Come on then lover boy…I still need to get your sizes.” I said pulling his arm as we went into a back room where all the measuring tape was.
