Now, I've never seen the Broadway productiion so all my opinions are based on the movie and the movie alone. I don't know if it was better or worse than the play because I've never seen the play.

But I LOVED the movie. The music is phenomenal and I love the characters so much. I saw it with one of my roommates who HAS seen it on Broadway and she loved it. She said it WAS better on stage but that the movie is still a really good rendition of it. I absolutely adore this movie and it is my favorite musical (and I don't watch many musicals so that's saying something).

What did everyone else think?

Yay Rent! *huggles movie*

Actually, at first I was like "GAH They're trying to kill me by screaming about not paying the rent! *hides under chair*" Heh...

But it greatly improved after that. I thought parts were a bit... dodgy *laughs* but that it was good over all ;)

(I haven't seen it on stage either *sad day*)

It's a great movie, and has the most songs of all the musicals I've seen, lol. But the singers have fantastic ranges, and the tunes are catchy, and though some of it is a bit...much ("La Vie Boheme"...*twitch* lol), I enjoyed it a lot.

Hmmmm

I was considering this movie but hadn't gone to see it because I saw the musical on broadway 6.5 years ago and I REALLY didn't like it. I was totally put off by all the singing about paying the rent. :lalala:

But I was thinking that maybe I was too young or something and didn't really appreciate it at the time. The night before we saw RENT we saw CHICAGO on broadway - and CHICAGO appears to have ruined me for every other musical b/c I adored it!

Maybe I'll rent Rent when it comes out and just fast forward through the more annoying songs. Your reviews sound promising.

I saw the original Australian production when I was fifteen and fell in love, and subsequently know the OCR by heart, so I was a little disappointed in the film. There were some awesome moments...'Tango: Maureen' and 'Take Me Or Leave Me', just to name a couple, but the dialogue which is supposed to be sung sounds REALLY dodgy when it's spoken...actually, that's probably just me 'cuz I'm such a purist and I know the play by heart.

But seriously, the amateur rights have just been released for the play, so pretty much every amateur theatre company in the world is going to be doing the show in the next year, so if you get a chance, go see it! You won't be disappointed!

I saw RENT on Broadway in Chicago two weeks ago... and it was more amazing than any musical I've ever seen live. I seriously cried my eyes out... Simply amazing. The acting was a little off and out of place, but the musical part of it was simple amazing...

I'm totally torn between the movie and actually seeing it live.

I  the movie, saw it recently but really badly dying to see the play! I would enjoy both and I hope to one day star in RENT on broadway. Hey, a girl can dream.

Me too! What part do you want? There's a company near me that's doing it this year, and I auditioned for Maureen, I'm so desperate to play her! Haven't heard back yet, hopefully next week we'll know though...
