Title: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Description: Success or Huge Letdown?

Kat - November 18, 2005 09:40 PM (GMT)
So, I just got back from seeing the fourth Harry Potter movie...Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and I was just wondering what others thought of it.

My friends were really disappointed in how much material was cut from the script, but I liked it. It was an excellent movie even if it didn't follow the book exactly...there's way too much stuff to do that. I also like the fact that if you don't read the books you have a hard time understanding. It's good for the people who think, "I don't need to read, I saw the film."

What really bothered me though is that there was no Dobby or Winky, they changed the Pensieve courtroom scene, and they ruined Dumbledore. Other than that, I really really liked it!! What are your opinions?

Cat - November 18, 2005 11:08 PM (GMT)
WARNING! SPOILERS!

Definitely agree with you Kat. I thought it was the best of the movies so far. They cut a lot out, but I get that they had to do that, it made the filming seem a little choppy though -- it wasn't that flowy.
I was so mad that they cut out Dobby and Winky! I love Winky's character as like the drunken, depressed house elf. And yeah, Dumbledore sucks, and I think Voldemort's performance wasn't the best. He seemed like a clown giving people a show.
I'm soooo proud of Daniel Radcliffe though; the beginning was a little shaky acting wise but I think he was brilliant during the grave yard scene and afterwards, although I thought the Priori Incantatem sucked. Where was the phoenix song and like the gold cage? Wasn't the strand connecting the wands supposed to be gold too? They didn't really explain it much, so people who haven't read the book would've been totally lost.
Also the tongue thing with Mad-Eye Moody? Ew. So not in the book, what were they thinking? If he needed a nervous twitch, why not like a hair pulling or foot tapping thing? He seemed like a very grotesque frog.
But no, I liked it. I liked the ghosts of Harry's parents, although I think they spoke a little too quickly, if I hadn't known what they were going to say I probably wouldn't have gotten it, but I get the need for urgency.

But anyway, this movie gave me hope for the next three.

I LOVE KRUM & Harry & Ron's pansy formal robes ha!

I just saw it two nights ago and I really loved it. I realize that they have to change things, cut out things from the book in order to fit it into a movie and make it move along quickly and not drag out. I think that they could have done a better job at explaining to the audience why Barty Crouch Sr. was killed. My friend and I went to see it with two friends who haven't read the books, so we were explaining some of the finer points after the movie. I loved loved loved the whole bit about the ball - everything about it. I loved the part in the study hall where Snape keeps shoving their heads down. And when one of the twins asked out Angelina - that was too funny. In the book, I pictured the taps in the prefect's bathroom differently, but they were cool how they did them in the movie. I loved that Hermione had so much fun with Krum and the way she told off Ron at the end of the ball. I didn't find Voldemort very scary at all, just a little creepy. I am happy that the movie was darker and 'scarier' than the others, though. Watching it made me want to re-read all the books again. ^_^

I can't WAIT till the fifth movie - I cannot wait to see Umbridge and the detention, to see Harry and Cho interact more, to see Harry's teen angst. I hope they put the painting of Sirius' mother in the movie and make her just as vile as she is in the book. I think the fifth book was my favourite. Oh, I also can't wait to see the DA in action and all their secret little meetings.

Almost forgot - Neville was such a darling in this film! I just loved that he went to the ball with Ginny and had SUCH a great time dancing - when he came in late at night with his tie undone and his shoes around his neck, I felt so good for him! "I just got in, ME." It's great when the underdog does good.

Some friends who hadn't read the books said they were a bit confused, but I just told them that they should read the books because then it all makes much more sense.

Well, I saw it a couple of days a go with 3 friends and the boyfriend. 3 of us had read the book and the other two were totaly lost..
Before seeing the movie somene had said to me. "seen the goblet of fire yet?" "no" "You WILL masterbate!" Lol!

Was too disapointed, cut out so much from the book(which I loved)
But there was some bits which left me in awe. Graveyard scene and when Amos sees Cedric's body. And the Ball of course.
The mermaids made me laugh for some reason *shrugs*
Oh well, still a good movie. But I think I prefer the third one :tom:
Have hope for the next three, the next book is my favourite so lets hope they don't miss out too much.
Damn having to cut short to fit into space of film.. Hmm....That's life I guess. :yeahright:
xx

Nefduliniel - December 4, 2005 10:27 PM (GMT)
I think that if you compare it to the books, it wasn't that great because they did cut out a lot. But they have to for the movies, the books are way too long to squeeze it all in.

Now, compared to the other three movies, it was FANTASTIC!!! I loved it, it is my favorite HP movie by far! I really loved it and I thought it was far better than the last three. I've seen it twice already. It was that good. I normally wait about a month before seeing it again.

I loved this movie! I agree, it's one of the best (the third one was bleh) movies, I think my favorites are the first and fourth now. They did such a good job with the characters.

Harry - His acting was tons better, and I loved the teen angst with Cho.
Hermione - Her acting has improved too, I loved her and Krum, especially when she was telling Harry about him, "He just likes to watch me study...when is kind of annoying, actually."
Ron - He's gone from whiny and immature to...less whiny, still immature, but amusing, Ron is awesome.
Neville - Oh man, I loved him in the movie, him dancing..."I just got in...me!" hehe
Ginny - I loved how they kept her character in by those few comments she made., and her dancing with Neville, cute.
Gred and Forge Fred and George - Hands down, my favorite characters in the whole series. I'm so glad they kept the part with the aging spell in there, that was classic. And their antics with the singing and chanting "Krum! Krum" :lmao: ...they crack me up...can't wait for the fifth movie...
"Bedtime fun Dumbledore" (since he always seems to be in his pajamas, lol) - Still sucks, and what's with his beard being sinched up with those bead things? Ok, Dumbledore SO would not have shook Harry like that after his name came out of the Goblet. We need Ian McKellan to step in, lol. He can put up with one more old wizard mentor role, I'm sure.
Cedric - *hugs him* He was so good! Alas, they kill off the good characters, lol.
Fleur - I hope she gets more annoying by the sixth book, ahahaha, they did the scene where Ron asked her out perfectly.
Krum - I thought Stanislav whatever his name is did a great job with him, the perfect Quidditch/bewitched/Hermione fancier, haha.
Madame Maxime - They did her so well! I cracked up when she said "Dumblydorrr".
Karkarov - Creepy, as usual. They also made it seem like he put Harry's name in the Goblet, I liked that.
Snape - He should have been in the movie more, but the detention (or classroom?) scene was hilarious.
Mad Eye Moody - Well done, I thought, and though the tongue thing creeped me out too, it made him seem very reptilian, which made sense since he was a Death Eater, and snakelike. I love the director forever for keeping the Draco ferret scene in there.
Rita Skeeter - The lady who played her was perfect, it was great, I loved the whole "my eyes aren't shining with the ghosts of my past!" thing, haha. I kind of wished that they had more of her as a bug, but that would involve them having to go into the whole matter and explain Hermione catching her and everything, which would have added another half hour at least, lol.
Voldemort (some have referred to him as "hotdemort" because he's played by Ralph Fiennes, lol, and he was the voice of Rameses in Prince of Egypt! I knew I recognized his voice from somewhere!) - I agree with Cat, he wasn't so scary, ok, maybe him being reborn was, but he was just creepy and showy. I liked their interpretation of him though.

Other things I loved: The Prefect bathroom, the dragon scene, Sirius' pep talk, the Unforgivable Curse session, Ron's dress robe scene (when he gets them), the ball (oh man, the Patil twins were GREAT), the Potter Stinks buttons. And there's probably something else I forgot, oh well.

Things I missed since they weren't in the movie: Fred and George trying out their wares (like the Skiving Snackbox and the issues students have with taking them, haha), Winky and Dobby, Ludo Bagman, the Veela, the Irish dropping fake Galleons, S.P.E.W., creatures in the maze (weren't there Blast-Ended Skrewts there that Hagrid was raising the entire year?), Fawkes

But overall, I give it two thumbs up! :yay: :yay: I just thought I'd give my full opinion on the movie, haha.

The third one is my favorite...most people I have talked to don't like it much.

But yeah.

I didn't really care for this one that much. I enjoyed it, of course, but I wasn't blown away or anything. I know they had to cut a lot of stuff out, but...I don't know. It could have been done better...differently.

I kinda felt like I was watching a REALLY extended movie trailer.

GOF ROCKED MY SOCKS. I LOVED EVERY SECOND OF IT.

Prisoner of Azkaban was a let down, it's the best book and the movie wasn't good. I don't have any sympathy for David Thewlis. He ruined my favourite character. *mourns Remus*

I missed all those things too :( And I especially wanted to see the blast-ended skrewts!! They were so hilarious! And I loved the Niffler part in the book, I really wanted to see that. They also missed Harry giving Fred and George his tri-wizard tournament winnings, and Sirius being up in the mountains. I loved all that.

Ummm...yeah Pat I agree with that one!
I liked the part where Ron was telling Hermione to tell harry that Seamus told him that Dean was talking to Parvati (or sonething of that nature...lol)
That whole movie was so so so awesome! It could have been better if they had kept some of the stuff in but yes, it would have taken waaaayyyyyy longer! I think they did a good job editing it and keeping to the time they had. Voldemort was so creepy!! And Daniel Radcliffe is soooooooooooooooo hott! He's mine! lol Cedric was too. Luv u guyz bunches! ~Alli~

I agree with the Dan radcliffeness! I mean, DUDE I never thought I'd see the day when I wanted to just eat him up. *flails* I wish I was an extra in the movie, or some random...OMG I SHOULD PLAY TONKS lol.

:heartbeat: Pat

Cat - December 14, 2005 03:56 AM (GMT)
Bahahahahha you just want to play Tonks because.... well, I can't say it incase anyone's here who hasn't read the sixth book... but I know it's because she shares a furry-creature love with YOU! Bahahahha *feels special because she's so cryptic*

You'd make a good Tonks though! ehehe

I saw this a couple of weeks ago...twice! (long story...)
and I have to say that I luuuurved it
I think it's the best out of all the movies. I like that is was darker than the other movies.
Of course I'd had wished that they wouldn't had to cut out all those scenes from the book...but I can totally see why. The book is so long > <
I wish they hadn't cut out dobby and winky though!

Some stuff that bugged me was that Ron and Harry was cheering for Bulgaria at the championships(!!!why?) and also that they did the dragon scene (which wasn't like that in the book at all) so long.

I loved the ball scene (like everyone else here seems to :P) and I also loved the scene in the train when he meets Cho for the first time ^^

and also that they did the dragon scene (which wasn't like that in the book at all) so long.

I think that if they could take the time to add random footage that adds nothing to the story, they could also make time to include characters and scenes that are imperative to the plot...say Winky, Dobby, the whole explanation of Barty Crouch Jr. But I still loved it regardless!

That's exactly what I was thinking!
That bugged me a lot in the third movie aswell...actually more than in this one. It was a while since I saw it tho, so I can't come up with any specific examples.

eedoe - December 23, 2005 05:01 PM (GMT)
I enjoyed the movie despite the deviations from the book. It was a better rendition than that of PoA - which I thought was terrible.

The one thing that I found unforgivable was their changing of Cedric's personality. Book Cedric would have never elbowed and shoved his way to try to get to the Goblet first.

yamazakura - December 29, 2005 12:45 PM (GMT)
Well, as for me, I was deeply disappointed with that movie. Whatever bad was in previous movies is nothing compared to crushes and letdowns in 'The Goblet of Fire'. -_-
Some things are great - I liked the dance lesson by McGonagall and some othe minor scenes, but in general... I did not like the fourth book, but, well, it has quite an interesting plot there - all those bizzare things about Moody, appearances and disappearances of Krouch-jn, Bagman... Harry's dreams, Hagrid's nature, Rita! Everything is lost! Instead of it we have good-looking, but completely pointless scenes like one with dragon! It's great, but why is it so long? The director might have put something more important instead...

Ryvyan - February 1, 2006 05:22 PM (GMT)
This is my favourite Harry Potter film so far, but then the first film was average, the second made me sleep, while the third was such a traumatising experience for me.

I did not notice the differences in the script with the book so much, maybe because I did not re-read the book before watching the film, but the changes work in some way. I am definitely disappointed they cut out some scenes (I can't remember which ones because I watched it a few months back) in between that made it choppy, but when something happened in the film, it appears to be without reason when the "prequel" or an explanation that should have been in the third film.

Still disappointed though.
