Your Majesty: Viggo Mortensen

M Magazine, Monterrey Nuevo Leon, Mexico, December 7, 2003

QUOTE
The lord of the rings is the last part of the movie trilogy directed by Peter Jackson, that closes the fantastic story created by JRR Tolkien, and that take Viggo Mortensen like the main character

Human, hobbits, an elf, and a dwarf are getting prepared to fight the last battle to save the Middle Earth from the evil forces, and the loyalty and the bravery are the only weapons to win this war.

Meanwhile, in the real world, artist communities are getting ready for the last movie premier from one of the best movie project and more ambitious in the movie’s history.

Three movies, one story, and, with this month Lord of the rings: The return of the king premier, the participants of this traveled path are closing this life chapter in their lives.

This project didn’t mean only to make the movie for more than one year, but to do journeys around the world to promote it.

This journey brought Viggo Mortensen to Mexico, and he had a reunion with M magazine in the Four Seasons Hotel in Mexico City.

The actor is barefoot, like is his own custom in the moment he does press interviews.

“I feel like in home” he said. “I mean, I don’t go out. I don’t have the chance to go out from the hotel”.

He is 45 years old and talks a perfect Spanish with an Argentina accent. A gift from hid 9 years living in that South American country.

His paper like Aragorn in the LOTR trilogy had become him into an international star, even if he said that it wasn’t the best thing he got after working in the project, because he is more into the friendships he got while he made the movie.

“It could be to the other way to, after the year and a half we could hate each other so bad”. He told us, “WE made a fellowship and we still do it, we call each other by telephone, and we always see each other like a family, because we worked like in the story, like a fellowship, and thinking in the best for the group, even more important than the best for you.”

The close relationship between them made easier the complicated filming in New Zealand.

“The best thing, at last, was what was under my nose, there, we whom made the movie, the team, and the actors. Like we had our days, specially the tough and difficult days, when you were tired, or when you didn’t know how to do the things or when you were pissed, there were always someone who could help you, you were able to count with the friends, very similar to the book.”
That didn’t mean that he isn’t thankful with the big opportunities the job that he did with Peter Jackson had gave him.

“Professionally, I wouldn’t get the main character in the movies *Hidalgo*” he said “It’s a very interesting story that I wouldn’t have the character if it wasn’t because my job in the lord of the rings”.

Viggo, who read the book just after he accepted the character, he hoped that the movies were popular, but he never imagined that they would become into this amazing international thing.

“The true is that no one expected this, I’m sure that they had their hopes and worries in the company because they gave a lot of money and that they would be broken if the movies wouldn’t have so much acceptation in the public with the first movie. They had hopes that it were a success, but we couldn’t say and in some point, we can’t say if a movie will be successful or not.” He told us.

If the actor could give to the successful movies something in particular, is the main value in the story, that have given to the movies the opportunity ti be between the 10 blockbusters in the worldwide history with 862.2 millions of dollars with The fellowship of the ring and 920.5 millions of dollars with the Two Towers.

“The reason why I think the movies have a great impact in the people, and that is the reason why a lot of people goes to watch one and another time the movies, is because they understand and they can relate the movies with their own lives, or the life of their hometown, with the things that happens in the story. Because in the deep it’s about a fellowship, a community, not only about a ring, but in the human, or earth community, the relationships not only between the humans, but with the nature, the respect for the history, the efforts that all the humans had given to learn things, to understand each other, the effort for the compassion, because it’s not a story about a hero, but about a lot of heroes, and it’s not a story about the perfect hero, there are some gray zones, there are weak moments for all the characters and that one thing that we can understand even if they are humans, dwarves, elves, monsters or fantastic beings.” He said.

The first two parts of the trilogy have 19 nominations for the Oscar and they had won 6 of them. They even had the honor that both movies had the nominations for the best movie in those awards.

If this year the movies get into the category, they’ll become in the same group as the *Good Father* like the only trilogies that had been in all their totality in the main category.

This doesn’t worry to the actor.

“The big thing the people have to these movies around the world, that’s the award, because that award stuff is a weird thing, we can’t compare the movies, the movies are different and then they don’t count some movies…” he explains. “I don’t think that Peter Jackson made this journey, because he gave long years to this, to win awards, he did it because he was interested in the story and to tell it in some way.”

For Viggo the award in the work.

“The memories I have after this team work is what is valuable for me, is the result that I have inside me and that I keep, the other is only the superficial stuff and a result that doesn’t have a thing to do with what we did, it’s the true.” he said.

About working in Mexico:

"There's something that are written in Spanish that are beautiful, the Spanish movies and the Mexican movies too. I've not seen many things, i've not seen 21 Gramos, but i saw the movie before it from the same director and i've seen some Cuaron* movies and some older movies, and the movies that others have done in Mexico. I would love to work some time in MExico."

About the moments that he doesn't make movies:

"This year I had pictures expositions in Denmark, Cuba, a couple of them in United States and i have one in New Zealand and i have an editorial (?) and we had published many books. I mean, i have more interests that took their time too, i don't see them like another different thing, but like different ways to make questions and to answer yourself like an artist and like a person, everything takes their time."

*Cuaron, a Mexican Director ... a very good one ...
