Title: Which Character Can You Connect With?
Ryvyan - December 7, 2003 07:20 PM (GMT)
Great topic!
But I can't really think of someone I can identify with right now... Hmm, maybe Sam. Loving nature and its beauty I guess, though I doubt I show it much. Appreciation for them is more like it.
I'd probably go through downs with my friends (hopefully nothing of that sort would happen to them of course) and unable to go on without them... Hmm...

For me, it would probably be Sam... Sam (and Sean Astin, for that matter) seem to get forgotten alot, muh to my perturbance  (is that a word? Sounds like one...). But I think they're both dolls.
I mean, I usually end up in sort of the same position. I'm usually the support and guidance for my friends, without asking much in return. In a lot of people's minds, I kinda take on the sidekick type image. They remember the people I'm with - but I don't make much of an impression. I don't know, I guess I can't explain it very well.... Just in personality and stuff, too... I don't know, I'm gonna give up trying to explain now. ^^;

I've always wanted to know this - which character you can connect/relate with the best, or which inspired you the most.
For me, as probably many others, it would have to be Frodo. Reason? Well, not too long ago I was in a horrible situation. I didn't care about my life, I would do stupid things that could have gotten me killed, simply because I thought I should just give up - I thought that I couldn't make it through the world, that everyone and everything was against me. Members in my family were sick with ALS and cancer, and I knew I was going to lose them.. Everything seemed to be going wrong.
After watching Frodo's amazing trek for the good, even though all odds were against him, he wouldn't give up. Many times he may have wanted to, but he had Sam behind him. In my case, Sam would be my mother. Through all the hard times I had, she never gave up on me - she always believed I was strong enough, even when I was horrible to her.... She was my true hero, as Sam is to Frodo.
This trilogy completely changed my outlook on life - how I was treating people and what I was really giving up... The world is cruel sometimes, but you've just got to keep going. It seemed there was no one who cared for me, but I was blinded by self-pity - my mother and father were there the whole time... It opened my eyes, really.
What about you? Come on, someone has to get as emotional as I just did... Lol. ^_^
Love,
Kay

What can I say? I think it's great that the trilogy changed your life, and as for me: I agree with every word you said. Frodo is absolutely the character I can identify myself with. It's hard to put into words why, because English isn't my mothertongue, but Frodo really resembles (is that a word?) hope. He makes me want to go on. If I'd go on about this, I'll say everything you have said a second time, which is a bit.. unnecessary! :P
Laila - December 7, 2003 09:51 PM (GMT)
Hmmm, I have to agree to Peiyu, very very nice topic!
I think for me it would be Éowyn. I mean I love characters like Frodo and Sam and Gollum, but I always loved Éowyn.
She has been hurt, has lost her parents, I haven't - not pysically, but sometimes I felt that way, and she is always seen as someone she is not, no one let's her be the one she want to be, and her dreams seem in vain, but she fights for them, fights for vlaour.
Then she falls in love, without any hope to ever have it returned, silent adoration, bitter solitude... god I love Éowyn
But actually there can be links to every character, and that is probably why this story moves us all so much, faramir, Frodo, Gollum even, Sam of course, Aragorn...
great story :)

I'd have to agree with Laila. Eowyn is like the all-powerful woman, whom I relate to because I hate being restricted because of my gender. She is full of strength and courage, and I encourage that in myself and in others.
If it was to be a cast member, it would be Viggo hands down, although Orli also holds something close to me. But Viggo and I are like clones lol.
Laila - December 7, 2003 10:55 PM (GMT)
*lol*
from the cast I'm most close to Elijah...
Viggo has some parts that I want to become, but far not everything...
Orlando holds nothing of me... really... nothing, at least nothing I discovered so far ;)...
But Elijah.... there are so many parallels... too many *lol*
*sigh*
but well...
it doesn't really matter in the end

Oh yeah! Eowyn! How could I forget Eowyn?? I have to agree. Eowyn too. And I agree, too, that there can be links to every character and - yeah, what Laila said (I can't phrase it as nicely, and even if I could, I would only be repeating what she said.)
Kaylee Ann - December 8, 2003 12:57 AM (GMT)
Thanks for replying, everyone! I love all of your answers!
Eowyn is also a very inspiring character, but I'll have to stick with Frodo for now. :)

i'd have to say Arwen. She won't give up on Aragon and thats how I feel about my Dad. He lives in Aussie and yern for the day when he's here living in the same town or even the same country as me. My mum keeps sort of saying he is your father, but not a very good one you should just give up and one day he might come around and see how much he's missed out on, but he's so stubborn that he probably won't, sort of like what Arwen's father's doing.
But I missed him heaps, cause even when my parents were together my Dad still lived overseas but he made time to come back and see me and my sisters and would call us every day and stuff. Now it just seems that he doesn't really care(I know he does though). but i'm not gonna give up on him, i will keep trying and hopeing that one day we will be as close as we were when I was 10. I just got to keep up hope

Even though I LOVE Hugo, and his brilliance as Elrond, I'll have to say that I can relate to Frodo the most. I've felt small and hidden away more than once in my life. And I've also had a load pressed onto me so large, and I was expected to carry that to the "Cracks 'O Doom" just as Frodo does with the Ring.

I feel really connected with Eowyn, she is a strong woman, and i admire her way to respond to the bad things, and i believe that she is more than a woman, and she is trying to show everyone that she valuable because of who she is, not because she is just a woman.
I think that i might be like Pippin too... he is so cute, and he is such a true friend, he followed his friends even if he felt that he was not so useful, but he wanted to help Frodo.
I guess both characters are quite different between them, but they're my favorites since i read the books... and i think that both characters are part of my own personality ... lol
luv

Wow, interesting... But kind of a tough one actually. As some of you said, it's eassy to connect with most of the characters...
I love Eowyn's character, she's so strong. But I don't think I could connect, I'm not half as confident. I'd love to be someone like her, though. I admire her determination and strenght.
I am sort of connected to Sam, in the sense of, being there for others, not expecting something in exchange. Though not everyone is as grateful as Frodo, if you know what I mean...
I might sort of connect with Legolas too, in this loner attitude I see in him. Maybe it's just me, but he seems the kind of person elf who enjoys company but also feels the need to spend time alone, and as probably all elves, be in touch with his inner self. That, I can identify with.
But in most of cases, I am more like Merry or Pippin. I don't really feel I'm very useful to others, even if sometimes I am, I many times feel like I'm an unneccesary burden. But sometimes too, I put my grain of sand to make the castle, you know? And even if it's not always much, I guess it's something.
Hmm... I'm kind of uncertain! LoL!
But I guess that'd be pretty much me...

I had to think about this a bit, but in the end I'd probably say Merry and Pippin.
I tend to block out reality and remain oblivious, yet joyful. No matter what, I keep the good mood rolling. I've always got laughter in me, even in unhappy times. I'm kind of like the comedic relief in some situations. Its like my own little bubble around me that blocks out terrible feelings.
I also may not always appear to be the brightest crayon in the box, but by the little things my inner intelligence may come out. (For ex. in the hobbits' cases, the idea of leaving the broch (sp.) on the path, and telling Treebeard to turn back). Thats just a few ideas.

This is a very tough question and it's hard to just pick one character to relate with since there's little bits in every character that I can relate with. After thinking about it I thought that Pippin is who I can most relate with.
Pippin~ He acts very much like a child. He doesn't take things seriously (often) and appreciates the good things in life. He doesn't over analyze anything and he's always positive. It's not always spoken but you can tell that he knows he's going to see home again, no matter what. I am a kid at heart and I love to drink, just like he does. I wouldn't concider myself a drunk in any means but I just like to kick back and enjoy life like him. I try not to dwell on certain situations too much and just live my life.

Cleopatra (queen of kitsch) - February 2, 2004 04:51 PM (GMT)
 I usually feel like bridget jones ^_^
have been able to shock somebody by saying that (huh. you? noooo!)
If I have to choose I would like to be like Eowyn (who wouldn't?)
But I'm a natural born hobbit (very much in touch with my belly, happy if enough sleep and regular feeding)
My brother has once tried to insult my mum and me by saying that we were Baggings-hobbits and he was a Took (you need to have read the book to get that one)
I think most off us feel a bit like any character at a certain time (we can only hope nobody feels like gollum or sauron )

Yes...let's hope
This is a difficult topic....really takes some soul searching. I think mostly I'm like Sam. I will be there for my friends, I am very loyal and I am quick to ferret out someone who shouldn't be trusted. I'm not the life of the party - I'm shy and somewhat reserved. But I do have a wicked dry sense of humour when I am comfortable. Sometimes I have to be pushed into things (thinking of Sam being practically forced to dance with Rosie) but if I feel strongly about something, I will fight for it.
I love Eowyn...but I don't think that I am very restricted because of my gender. My school is more that 60% female. There are like 10 guys in my major.  If anything - it's the boys that are restricted. The ratio at the vet school is 80% female. (School is such an all-consuming part of my life right now, so this is of course the first thing I think about). :lalala:

I can't believe I didn't realize this topic was here before. It's such an interesting one. And of course, I have to put my two cents in.
As a character, I'm Pippin. I'm always the resident smart arse who finds herself in over her head because of something stupid I did and need some help from my friends to correct it. And it took something really stupid that I did to step up to the plate, take responsibility for my actions, and grow up.
In relation to the actors, I would say I'm closest in personality to Dom- which makes sense because both he and Billy have said that they were cast backwards. Dom is more like Pippin and Billy is more like Merry. I'm always up for having a good time and have a smart comeback on the tip of my tongue for everything. And I am always the joker or comic relief in any given situation.
