This week's Vanity Fair has a nice (pretty made up to my modest opinion) article...
I could have made it up myself as it looks like taken out a fanfiction!
Anyway! I translated it from Italian, so here it is, for your eyes only!
In red my comments!
Orlando, beloved friend of mine.
The first time she met him she threw her arms around his neck. They became best buddies and they still are.
Actress from "La meglio gioventù" tells us about the secret Bloom, from his messes with the girls on.
My first contat with Orlando? Pure madness. I jumped off him, threw my arms around his neck and kissed him. I didn't even know what his name was, but he was beside me when we were called up by Guildhall to be told the results of the admission examinations. After long days of acting, improvising, dancing, we had become a small group of one hundred out of one thousand. We were called up on a Sunday and divided into three groups – we would find out only later on that the three groups were those of the rejected, admitted and stand-by actors (that could eventually enter the school if somebody among the admitted would give up at the last minute) – and the enclose us in three different rooms. Among the general panic, I pictured for just a fraction of second the guy who was standing beside me.
“Cute!” I thought, but then fear kicked in once again. He started playing the dimwit to break the tension.
“Guys, perhaps there’s a camera shooting what we are doing and they are still examining us. Maybe it is like in A Chorus line: they called us the first to tell us we are out!”
Then the teachers entered.
Silence.
When they told us we are the winning group, I hugged Orlando and kissed him soundly on his cheek.
It was one of the most beautiful moments in my life. I did not know I was sharing my happiness with a person who would become one of my best friends.
We used to call each other Me Maya, Me Orlando, which is a sweet way to say “my” to a person in cockney dialect. Orlando likes being tender and sweet in friendship. The first time I went to his place he started calling:
“Gibbo, Giiiiiiibbooooooo!”. And from another room you could hear: “Gibbo!”
This was the way he used to call his roommate Chris.
In reality, we got closer only after some time. I used to live at the Student’s house near the Barbican Centre, where the school is. Orlando was a Londoner (LONDONER????) a bit shy and didn’t use to share his life with the rest of the students. He was in his hometown, he had his own friends and he kept on going out with them. Besides this, he was “the hot one” in the classroom and this didn’t help. For me, for instance, it only created distance. The second year, though, he started going out with us. Some random chats in the pub and we got closer. It was total synchronicity. We used to be always together. That year I lived in Stamford Hill, with my Greek friend in a home of orthodox Jews who didn’t treat us nicely. It was a sad place and far from the school. I used to sleep at Orlando’s sometimes. He didn’t drink or smoke and we liked relaxing in the swimming pool after school or strolling across London parks.
Orlando looks distracted. But you soon realize he has an out of ordinary ability to listen to people, and in this we are similar. He has a special aura, alight that has nothing to do with his beauty. He is generous, truthful, and has an incredible ability to love. I realized he was a special person when I met his friends. If you want to understand somebody’s nature you must observe who twirls around this person. Our mates at the Academy never learnt to welcome him, they didn’t see such qualities. His true friends of the time were Mathew Brown and myself. Brown left after the first year
Question: Didn’t she get close to Orlando only in the second year?
When I came back to Italy to work in the movie “La balia” by Marco Bellocchio and I was away for three months I think he suffered very much. Especially because of the accident.
When I learnt what had happened it all seemed to me a nightmare. I was really happy because I was the only girl who had to prepare a scene of the Hamlet. On a Sunday, Orlando invited me to go out but I refused as I had to learn the scene. He went out, his vitality usually put him in messes bigger then he.
He went to some girlfriends of his’ place for lunch.
Here they tell about Orlando falling off three stories… read any early fanfic and you’ll find the same resume.
The next morning I arrived at school and didn’t see him. Teachers informed me…
“Yeah, Maya, it’s about Orlando’s life…”
For an instant it felt like dying, but after a first confusing moment I felt relieved as he was still alive.
…
The Orlando Bloom we know today is the result of those dreadful days. Something like that changes you, it gives you the measure of your strength. When I entered his hospital room his look was terrorized. Morphine didn’t prevent him from suffering, he could not move. Then only ten days after I go to the hospital and I see Chris lying on Orlando’s bed reading a strip. “Where’s Orlando?” I asked him alarmed. “Restrooms!” he answered with a wonderful smile. Then showed up helped by a pair of clutches and we start strolling in the hallway. That day I said to myself “Nobody will stop him!”
Orlando used to have job offers even when he still was a student. He was the only one among us in having an agent and in those three years he refused all the roles he was offered. The last year our course mates were in search of am agent, and he with ten lines in a play where he was not the main lead got seven offers. The others used to suffer because of that. He also ran the risk of acting in an Italian movie, Canone Inverso by Ricky Tognazzi. They wanted him for a dramatic role, but when the cinema discovers his comic side we’ll see another Orlando. His levity is the thing that strikes me the most in him.Peter Jackson was right when he gave him the role of an elf instead of a human.
The last day of school he was cast in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Three movies, a year and a half in New Zealand. Naturally the production allowed him to have his friends and family there. I spent there a month with him on the set. In Wellington, a wonderful town on the Ocean, he had a gorgeous house where we saw rent movies until exhaustion. But we also traveled a lot, because we wanted to explore that awesome country on a car. And then there were extreme sports, a passion of Orlando’s: parachuting, surf, rafting, bungee jumping. Not to mention his horse back riding scenes…
Here the article mentions all the extreme sports they did together…
Orlando is not a careless guy: he is a creative. Sculpting and photography are two passions of his. He also had an artistic diary made of Polaroids and thoughts during the making of LOTR. He is a poetic being and he had kept a wonderful ability to dream and to get impassioned to people and arts. When we saw Romeo and Juliet of Baz Luhrmann he said we should do it.
…
At the moment the phone is fundamental in our friendship. He’s better than I and calls me from wherever he is. He complains that it is always him picking up the phone but it is not easy to talk to him these days. Success didn’t change him: he still keeps his friends. When I see picture of his on magazines I recognize his t-shirts and his trinklets and I see that he still is the usual old friend, of the years when we used to hope with all our strengths that we would fulfill the dream of acting.

PS I translated it abruptly and without the help of a dictionary, so please bear up with my mistakes and typos.
