Column 1
Fan Fiction generals, Terms, Genres and Types: A to Z

To start and locate you in the fan fiction world I have to tell you about the terminology used on them, whether for ratings, definitions, content or just parts of the disclaimer that sometimes seems confusing. This has been taken from several sites. If you have any other definition that does not appears here, please share it with us.

Angst: fiction related mostly to emotional pain. The pain and feelings of the character are a vital part of the plot, vague or strong shades of masochism could be found.

AU or A/U:
or Alternate Universe, most known too as science fiction fanfics, that refer to a parallel world, or a world or universe different from the ‘normal one’.

B&D, B/D, bd:
Bondage and Domination - mind and control games, sometimes with humiliation involved.

Beta: editing a fan fiction adding and correcting the proper punctuation and grammar.

Beta reader:

Het: fic featuring or fictional situations depicting two people of different genders romantically and/or sexually involved.

HHJJ: Happy happy joy joy.

M/M : male/male

Mary Sue: usually is known as the ‘improved version of the perfect girl’ who makes it all okay, who is always fine and always has to find the solution for everything. Has money and the perfect life.

Multiple or multi: multiple partners (m/m/f, f/f/f, m/m/m/m...)

NC-17:
adults only (explicit sex)

PWP : Plot, what plot? A sex story as it name says… Without plot, just smut.

Pre-slash: Prelude to a slash story. Usually they're stories where the characters are still discovering or accepting their feelings for each other.

R: rated R (non-explicit sex)

rape story:
Fic in which a character is raped. Usually implies an h/c plot.

S&M, S/M, sm - Sadism and Masochism
Involves actual pain and humiliation.

Slash:

UST: Unresolved Sexual Tension. Canonical or fanfictional sexual chemistry between two characters who are not at the time in a sexual relationship.

Vignette: Very short story.

WIP: Work In Progress. A story that is still being written by the author at time of posting, almost all fics in forums are WIP.
