Thats what I ended up with :)

Okay open a new canvas, 400x400 pixels
Select the rectangular marquee tool and make a few shapes, just follow my shape to start with to make it a bit easier.
Fill the selection with black

Now select the shape with the magic wand tool
and open CHANNELS

Fill the selction with WHITE and go to FILTER>BLUR>GAUSSIAN BLUR
select 5.0

It should be looking a bit messy now but don't worry about it, we're gonna smooth it all out now :)
go to IMAGE>ADJUSTMENTS>CHANNELS
and move the little triangles till it looks smooth

Press ok, now select the magic wand tool and select the black area, press ctrl+shift+i
this will invert the selection. Dont be tempted to select the white straight away, the end effect isn't as good
press ctrl+x to cut the selection
and open LAYERS again
paste the new layer and delete the old layer. Add a few blending options and hey presto, you have a smooth shape. This works very well on orbs as

well, which i will do a tut on soon.

Any problems dont hesitate to pm me-Deep Kick
