Unfortunately TV norm conversion is not that easy - especially from PAL to NTSC.
Easier would be a multi norm TV set, and a video recorder with PAL and NTSC playback. Here in Europe most TV sets and video recorders are able to handle NTSC (sometimes changed into PAL60), but I don't know about US-TVs and video recorders, as usually the USA don't care about other TV norms (you're happy with Never The Same Color :P ).
Anyway, there're stores offering norm conversion for money - you can check that out.
Kate - December 15, 2003 11:02 AM (GMT)
Hah! You beat me to it, Dr. Nick. I was going to say Never Twice the Same Colour. Good old NTSC and it's wonderful frame rate.
BTW, SophieCarny - NTSC and PAL are both VHS video format, it's the frame rate (the number of times a still image is displayed per second) they are recorded at that differs... so the playback quality suffers if you play NTSC in a PAL zone (machine) and vice versa. I think there is a NTSC/PAL convertor in most TVs these days, so the worst thing that happens is a lack of true colour, and a lot of lines when you press pause... or am I wrong?
Dr. Nick - December 15, 2003 11:19 AM (GMT)
The problem is that both TV and video recorder must be able to handle the norm. If you play a PAL video on an NTSC video recorder (without PAL playback feature) the picture will be B/W - regardless if the TV is able to handle PAL signals or not, moreover it'll flicker, 'cause of different sync signals used (60 Hz vs 50 Hz) - another problem is that NTSC has 525 lines, while PAL has 625.

I bow to your inordinate wisdom and bounty of knowledge...

thanks kate and the good doctor!

say what?
ok so to convert NTSC to PAL( or whatever they have here) i need a special VCR??
kate, do you have it on DVD by any chance. I really want to see this short!
thanks
Cleaduvallslover - December 26, 2003 04:04 PM (GMT)
Hi
I am willing to send you out a copy of it on vhs to see if it works in your system.
Dont worry about any costs.
Just e-mail me on my msn msgr and I will sort something out.
Also If My brother comes up good, I might have a way of getting it transfered from the vhs to a vcd. B)
Take care
Jodes
Dr. Nick - December 26, 2003 04:12 PM (GMT)
Norm conversion capable video recorders are rather expensive, and not really needed. As I already mentioned a simple playback feature would be enough. But I doubt that US-video recorders offer such a PAL playback feature (cause it is more difficult), while almost all PAL/European video recorders offer NTSC playback (usually as PAL60 - which is NO real norm conversion!). Also if you want it on VCD/SVCD/DVD check whether you DVD player is able to handle PAL discs (or whoever encodes it, be sure to encode it in NTSC)!
Kate - December 27, 2003 01:16 AM (GMT)
Jodes, you rock.
Sophie, I don't have it on DVD, but - Jodie mentioned that she might send me a VHS copy, and I can convert VHS to quicktime/WMP and zip it to you on a disk for your computer - if the VHS thing doesn't work out for you.
We'll see how it goes, hey? Fingers crossed for you.
Riley - December 27, 2003 04:49 AM (GMT)
Could you zip and email it to an aol account???? :/
sofiecarny - December 27, 2003 05:46 AM (GMT)

Don't worry about addressing the DVD request to me, Sofie... subconsciously, you just wanted to speak to me, I understand that.

It's not that difficult to convert video from Pal to NTSC with the right program. Also, for DVD it may be possible to "hack" your player to play movies from other zones. There are lists available of player hacks online if you're interested.
