Title: Where You From?

GrahamEaton - February 6, 2004 06:40 AM (GMT)
I was thinking today.... we should all get together. And then I laughed at myself and was like, yeah right, cuz we're all so far apart. But that goes me thinking, who is really where? So instead of listing individual countries, because there are billions, I just listed continents, with the exception of North America, which I broke up. So..... vote your local and below, say what country (or state or provience) you are from..... Just out of curiousity.

GrahamEaton - February 6, 2004 06:41 AM (GMT)
Me... I am originally from Newaygo, Michigan, but for the last two years, I have lived in Sutherland, Virginia. We don't plan on staying here forever.... I'm longing for Canada... but we'll see.

iloveclea - February 6, 2004 07:36 AM (GMT)
i'm from the us of a, and new jersey more specifically. i grew up in bayville, then i moved to lakehurst, then toms river. i now live in new brunswick, where i've been for the past 3 and a half years for school, and although i don't want to live here forever, i'm probably going to start working full time for the university in a few months, so i'll be here for a few more years if my plans work out.

Kate - February 6, 2004 08:06 AM (GMT)
I'm in Sydney, Australia. I lived in Indonesia for a while, and then I went away to college in Canberra (captial of Aus), but now I have moved back because I really like Sydney. S'nice.

I plan to live in a lot of different places before I get tied down with a wife and three kids, or a husband and two dogs, or 34 cats and an extensive stamp collection.

Like Graham, I think Canada would be an awesome place to live. I haven't been to North America, so I am coming over to scope out locations soon.

Toad_T - February 6, 2004 11:46 AM (GMT)
I am Swedish but I live in Norway, in a small town called Halden, the only town mentioned in the norwegian national anthem (yey... ) The poulation is about 25000 and most of them are like farmers...or old people. So basically a very boring place to live.
It's very close to the swedish border though, it takes about ten minutes to drive there. I can see swedish water from my house! :)
It's in the southeast in Norway, as south as you can get near the border of Sweden.

This autumn, I'm (hopefully) going to Bergen in Norway for a year (in the westcoast of Norway), and after that I'd really like to get into UCLA in Los Angeles to study Ethnomusicology.
I'd like to move to Ireland as well. Dublin is an amazing city.

emma - February 6, 2004 12:31 PM (GMT)
woo hoo australia, im in this puny town Rockhampton in Queensland Australia!!

but graham i was thinking the same thing bout us all getting together, and i was thinking but they all live too far away, and then i was like well when i win lotto or get rich i would pay for everyone to fly over to my place and we could have like the biggest ever sleepover/ slumber party!! that would be so fucking awesome, but then i woke up and :( realised i was just being stupid!! but it was nice while it lasted!!

by the way im only in australia for the next 5 years, then i'll be in L.A

Crys - February 6, 2004 04:14 PM (GMT)
I live in Lorain, Ohio. Grew up mostly in Monroe, Michigan. I'd rather be there again, really. I hate Ohio.

Crystie - February 6, 2004 10:03 PM (GMT)

Crystie - February 7, 2004 03:37 AM (GMT)

Pretend you're really old. I mean, really, really old. I'm sure some of them will start to look better to you then.

It's really all about perspective.

Or I don't know what I'm talking about.... Who knows.

have you heard of bayville before???? usually no one ever has (even people in nj), so i usually just say i'm from toms river because most people have heard of that. a few years ago, our little league baseball kids won the world series or something like that, so everyone has heard of our town. but yeah, that's where i'm from.

and good ol' nyc is not far from me. good deal. :) i thought everyone on here lived super far from me, so it's comforting to know that you live kinda close.

Lemming - February 7, 2004 09:00 PM (GMT)
I chose Europe...because, i live in England....Yup, that old rainy wet country with stupid Blair as our primeminister and stuff....That little island across the Pond, that tiny pathetic little country where people get away with murder, literally.
Yup, that's my home sweet home.

iloveclea - February 8, 2004 02:30 AM (GMT)
(since england kinda sucks in her opinion, lemming recently said she's going to move to new jersey to live with her fiancee... more to come on your local news at 6.)

Margot - February 8, 2004 11:08 PM (GMT)
I am from Jackson, Michigan.....I go to Eastern Michigan University so i spend alot of time there too.......Jackson is pretty boring but Ann Arbor is a fun city which is near by....

p3ngu - February 8, 2004 11:15 PM (GMT)
I am also from England but don't actually agree with Lemmings (no offence) I love where I live and my country (though perfect it aint). I have been to a number of places including Sydney, New York and about seven trips to Florida! That is my favourite holiday  great shopping.

Any way, what I love the most is the people in my life, more than the surroundings.

Dr. Nick - February 9, 2004 09:47 AM (GMT)
I'm from Germany (you know, the "old" Europe ^_^ )

I have one question....WHERE THE HELL IN ENGLAND DO YOU LIVE??
haha, we have bloody Blair ruining the country, the queen does nothing but wave and go into hospital and with all this palava with the Royal family, as well as the freezing weather(it was -3 this morning) and the rain, im getting out as soon as i can. Maybe ill move to where you live if it's so good...

Kate - February 10, 2004 07:34 AM (GMT)
Hey! The queen also gives those top notch speeches at Christmas, don't forget! Have some national pride, m'girl!

GrahamEaton - February 10, 2004 05:44 PM (GMT)
Yey for everyone in Michigan!! Margot.... you go to Eastern? That's in Yipsilanti, right? My best friend in the whole world's boyfriend goes to college there.... he's a wanker, though. My family and all my friends are still in Michigan..... I go there every summer for a bit.

Yeah, but the only reason people watch that is because they are waiting for the Eastenders' special to return back on. They put the speech on in the middle so people HAVE to watch it. They're sneaky like that you see..

Margot - February 11, 2004 02:41 AM (GMT)
Yeah Graham, its in Ypsi...I graduate this summer and I have yet to meet any cool people at that entire university, the campus sux.......do you know what your friend's boyfriend's program is?.........I'm at the school of business

Where did you used to hang out in michigan?? have you ever been out in ann arbor??

I'm so glad to see michigan people on the board!! 3 total??

Crys - February 11, 2004 04:38 AM (GMT)
I say we unite and take over. But that's probably just because I really enjoy saying the phrase "unite and take over." :)

Kate - February 11, 2004 07:46 AM (GMT)
I prefer "untie and take cover" - but that just stems from my giant-slaying days.
They're clumsy bastards, giants, and if one falls on you - you're pretty much buggered.

Actually I'm a Mancunion, I don't like Blair, and the Royals are great Ambassadors of this country, to put any other importance to their role would be a mistake. I hate the fact we get taxed on our tax, but love that we have a free health service.

AND... There is nothing better than lying in bed listening to the wind and rain when you are all cosy and snug!! :)

Crys - February 11, 2004 06:41 PM (GMT)
Yeah, "untie and take cover" seems to be a pretty popular saying in the giant slayer community. I did always like it, but not being a giant slayer, I've never really had the opportunity to use it.

I won't give up hope though. Someday, I'm sure I will be in a situation where I'll have a chance to say it.

I've been lurking for a while, but I felt the need to defend my country against Lemming's unpatriotic sentiments ;) p3ngu, I completely agree with you- Britain is great, the Royal family are a draw for tourists (and therefore serve a purpose) and Tony Blair is an absolute tool. As for our high taxation, that pays for our wonderful, FREE national health service.
Coincidentally, I live just over the Pennines from you in sunny West Yorkshire- and I agree, coming from one of the rainiest parts of Britain, that there is nothing more comforting than rain tapping on the window if you're wrapped up indoors(other than being snuggled up to a gorgeous woman ;) )

Just to ingratiate myself to everyone else on the board, I do, in fact, love Clea DuVall more than life itself :D

i guess everywhere has it good points and it's bad points. like sometimes i talk like new jersey is the greatest place in the universe and i never want to leave. and other times, i think it sucks and i can't wait to move far away. i guess it all depends on the perspective and the day and all.

iloveclea - February 12, 2004 05:07 AM (GMT)
ps - that is the best thing in the world that you have national health insurance. we need to have that over here!!! there are so many people without health insurance that it's really upsetting. if people are really sick and need to be in a hospital, they can't even go to the doctor's because they don't have insurance and they don't earn enough money to pay the astronomical price of a doctors visit, medicine, or medical tests.

hysterogenic - February 12, 2004 05:44 AM (GMT)
Odessa, TX that is where i be, but canada is where i want to be... kate u coming to scout locations eh? i better know when and by golly we'll live in canada together someday!

yea i know...in new york i always hear ads on the radio about insurance and stuff saying that its not available in New Jersey...whats up with that?

New York as some fucked up laws about insurance and how policies need to be written...

Here in the midwest they have ads that say the policies aren't available for NY residents. It's just different state laws that's all.

As far as a national health plan... I don't know that it would work in the US, just because the people don't want the higher taxes. I think hospitals should be able to give care to people who need it and don't have insurance and be able to write it off on it's taxes.

Hey, I have an idea. Let's play a game! All of you foreigners, ie, people that don't live in America, try to sell me on the idea of moving to your country. Tell me what's good about it and why I should move there because um, I'm very tired of living in America. (Hint.... my big issues are civil unions, second parent (gay) adoption, and nationwide health care). Winner gets a prize (Hint: the prize is me and my gf as neighbors)
