Usually on the Dreamcast version if you put your chao in the VMU it seems to have a high chance of lossing it unknowingly, in the Sonic Adventure 2 game anyways. I tend to hit this problem when I transfer a chao from one garden memory to another garden memory. Usually having your chao go on Chao Adventure 2 is quite pointless, other for seeds.
Sonic Adventure 1 doesn't have this problem, plus the Chao Adventure is well worth it.

Dunno. I just entered the garden and it wasn't there... mybe it happens when all your gardens are full and you bring in a new chao...
