Title: Zurich Open
LDF - October 14, 2006 01:52 PM (GMT)
Main draw:
(1)Amélie Mauresmo (FRA) vs bye
Samantha Stosur (AUS) vs Qualifier
Marion Bartoli (FRA) vs Ai Sugiyama (JPN)
Daniela Hantuchova (SVK) vs (6)Patty Schnyder (SUI)
(3)Svetlana Kuznetsova (RUS) vs bye
Jelena Jankovic (SCG) vs Qualifier
(WC)Nathalie Dechy (FRA) vs Anna Chakvetadze (RUS)
Anna-Lena Groenefeld (GER) vs (5)Martina Hingis (SUI)
(7)Nicole Vaidisova (CZE) vs Tatiana Golovin (FRA)
(WC)Emmanuelle Gagliardi (SUI) vs Maria Kirilenko (RUS)
Katarina Srebotnik (SLO) vs Mary Pierce (FRA)
bye vs (4)Elena Dementieva (RUS)
(8)Francesca Schiavone (ITA) vs Qualifier
Qualifier vs Anastasia Myskina (RUS)
Shahar Peer (ISR) vs (WC)Alicia Molik (AUS)
bye vs (2)Maria Sharapova (RUS)
Amelie's section of the draw isn't too difficult, so I'd expect her to get through to the semi-finals. Then again, she could just as easily be bagelled or blow match points against Schnyder or something
Martina should be fine against the out-of-sorts Groenefeld. Chakvetadze could prove to be a tough opponent in the next round though, with her big hitting off both sides great movement. Martina will need to be in good form from the start. A QF against Kuznetsova would be intriguing; Svetlana was crushed in Moscow and it'll be interesting to see if she regain her form here.
Vaidisova v Golovin is arguably the highlight of the round. Nicole, despite her loss to Nadia, played some good tennis in Zurich this week. That said, Tati was brilliant in her run to the Stuttgart final when she lost to a rampant Petrova. It's a very tough call. Maria has a chance to get to the second round (shocking, I know  ) by drawing Gagliardi, but with Maria nothing's a sure thing. Srebotnik is a tough draw for Pierce, but she was hitting the ball sweetly against Jankovic in Stuttgart and I think she'll win this match.
It's nice to see Molik in the draw, but I'd expect Peer to knock her out; Alicia unfortunately isn't back to the level she showed in early 2005.
What is Myskina doing in the draw?! :o I thought she was out for the rest of the season!

Exactly! What is Nastya doing in the draw?! If she was fit you'd think she'd have returned at Moscow not a week later in Zurich
SerenaW19 - October 14, 2006 01:54 PM (GMT)
Where is Serena?
I think Maria might withdraw from this to rest up for the YECs...

Woooooooo! Hingis! :yahoo:
I think she should be ok until the semis, IF she gets that far!

Peer vs sharapova potentially second round. Peer has been unfortunate with second round draws of late. Would be great if this match materialised, as peer is improving all the time and extended Schynder and DEmentieva to the limit in the last couple of weeks. With those flat, early-ball groundstrokes, she could give shazza a stern test especially with maria's recent injury trouble. Go shahar, really is becoming a fav of mine :D
Pierce vs Dementieva second round could be a potential classic if both fit and striking the ball well. We saw glimpses of pIerce's 2005 hitting in Stuttgart, so lets hope for something more of the same here :D
And Jankovic vs Kuzy potentially :o lets hope jankovic is well-rested and able to offer more resistance than in the stuttgart encounter. kuzy has a point to prove here after her disastrous campaign in moscow.
Lets hope for an ace tourny :D

Go Martina! Get revenge on Sharapova, Mauresmo and Kuznetsova. Btw, what's with Mauresmo and Stosur always meeting early on in tournaments?

Great summary LDF :ok:
And what a draw - so many intriguing early matches.
Vaidisova v Golovin in the 1st round is a cracker - Golovin is the more rested so she could take this but it's likely to be tight.
Hopefully Mary can beat Srebotnik - a match against Dementieva could be an epic.
Not sure what Myskina is doing here but I hope she's on form - if she is she could do some damage.
Really looking foraward to this.

go martina :D
her quarter is a bit tricky. she beat chakvetadze & kuznetsova on her way to the montreal final in august. but both those players are clearly playing better tennis now. yet i still think hingis can make it out of that quarter.

Hingis is cruising through this so far.
4-0 up against Groenefeld.
SerenaW19 - October 16, 2006 04:59 PM (GMT)
The new inconsistent version of Hingis then gets broken after bagelling in the first set

Lucky to get away with that second set, hingis's serve was getting slower and slower. It was her better court-positioning that forced the errors out of groenfold and thus gave her the match. Pretty careless though from Hingis, but i'm sure she'll be sharper or at least i hope she's sharper for the next round.

Srebotnik 4-2 up against Pierce :o

I watched the whole match, but I missed from 5-5 to 7-5, but changed back right at the end! :D B)
Hingie was on fire at the start, but as usual, she let her opponent back in the game, and then finished her off! Yeah! B)

Mary :o
She was hitting the ball so well in Stuttgart :(
Russiafan - October 16, 2006 06:14 PM (GMT)
5-3 to Kata :D :o
But I doubt it will last, I'm sure Mary will get going and bagel her in the third.

I feel really heartless in saying this but I won't really be that bothered when Mary retires. She has grown on me very slightly the past year or so but really I will never forgive her for a certain injury time out
