Title: Will McEnroe follow in Martina's footsteps?

mightyjeditribble - October 12, 2006 08:58 PM (GMT)
Johnny Mac is currently winning his match, teamed up with Jonas Bjorkman, in Stockholm. They already won their first tournament together early this year. Do you think he'll make a fuller return to the doubles tour if they do well again? Can he win another slam, with the likes of the bryan brothers around? With Martina playing until she was almost 50, you've got to put him in with a chance!

It's a pity he didn't come back a bit sooner, and teamed up with Martina Nav for doubles --- that would've been a combination to teach those youngsters a thing or two.

From Bjorkman's blog, about his doubles match with McEnroe yesterday:

".. But it was not the result that was the most important thing this time. It was the atmosphere. Sheer magic. Bjorn Borg and Stefan Edberg were both there. ..."

Sounds like a great match --- do you reckon we'll see more of Mac playing doubles in the future? It would sure be great! Let's see how they do in their match today --- sure to be tough, I suppose.

I think he wants to keep playing tennis as his hobby to be honest, he stayed on the tour til he was into his 30's so has probably played all he wants to. Commentating is his job now, tennis is just something he does in his part time ;)

Afraid you may be right there. But I still hope that he might feel the hunger for it again - he's clearly still got what it takes!

I'm not sure he'll play men's doubles at a grand slam again, with it being best of 5 set matches. It'd be great if he played mixed at Wimbledon again though, choose the right partner and he's got as good a chance of winning it as anyone. I think he likes doing the commentary more though at Wimbledon.

But is it still best of five? I seem to remember that it was best of three at the USO, though I may be wrong. (The mixed actually had those strange 10-point tie-breaks instead of a third set.) Not sure what will happen at the AO and the French, though, and I'd imagine that Wimbledon would resist shortening the matches (though you never know).

Well I'm not sure, but it was definitely best of 5 sets this year. As I remember this match here :D

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) — After two days of tennis, Daniel Nestor and Mark Knowles just wanted their Wimbledon doubles quarterfinal match against Simon Aspelin and Todd Perry to be over — one way or another.

"It got to the point where (you're thinking), 'Can we arm-wrestle? Or can we do something else just to end this? Play 2-on-2 hoops or something?'" Knowles said Wednesday. "We thought we'd been in every position possible, but we'd never been in this situation before."

Nor had anyone else.

Knowles of the Bahamas and Nestor of Canada beat Aspelin of Sweden and Perry of Australia 5-7, 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 23-21 in 6 hours, 9 minutes, making it the longest singles or doubles match by time in Wimbledon history — and the longest doubles match at any Grand Slam tournament.

The fifth set alone lasted more than 3 hours, and the match was played over two days; it was suspended by darkness Tuesday night with the fourth set tied 11-11.

Yes, I remember it was best-of-five at Wimbledon, which is why I was surprised that it wasn't at USO.

In any case, Bjorkman and McEnroe were 3-1 up (1 break), but just got broken back to 3-2.

You cannot be serious! ;)

Perhaps Wimbledon doubles will be best of 3 in '07. Wouldn't count on it though, they like their traditions at Wimbers! :D

Yeah, I suspect Wimbledon will hold out, at least for next year.

Bjorkman/McEnroe were up a minibreak, but it seems to be back on serve now.

6-3 now! 6-4. 6-5, now on their own serve. But Aspelin/Perry get the mini-break back to make it 6-6. Back on serve. And it's a mini-break for Aspelin/Perry, who get a set point on their own serve. And they take the set.

Bad luck for Johnny Mac, but no need to despair yet --- that set was pretty close, they might well still stay in the match.

they just lost :(

Aspelin/Perry win 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-2).

Oh dear. Johnny Mac and Jonas Bjorkman just lost the second set tie-break as well (7-2), so they're out.

Still, well done against a top doubles team. It would be good to see him play some more, for sure!
