Title: Calibre of players faced in Grand Slam Finals.

SerenaW19 - October 12, 2006 01:57 PM (GMT)
Just thought this would be interesting to see who had to beat the classiest acts to win their grand slams...

Serena:
Martina Hingis
Venus x5
Lindsay Davenport

Venus:
Serena
Lindsay x3
Justine Henin-Hardenne

Martina:
Mary Pierce
Jana Novotna
Venus Williams
Conchita Martinez
Amelie Mauresmo

Justine:
Clijsters x3
Mary Pierce
Svetalana Kuznetsova

Maria:
Serena Williams
Justine Henin-Hardenne

Mary:
ASV
Conchita Martinez

Kim:
Mary Pierce

Svetlana:
Elena Dementieva

Anastasia:
Elena Dementieva

Capriati:
Martina Hingis x 2
Kim Clisjters

And a couple of blasts from the past:
Steffi Graf:
Martina Navratilova x4
Chris Evert
Natalia Zvereva
Gabriela Sabatini x2
ASV x5
Helena Sukova x2
Jana Novtona
Martina Hingis
Mary Jo x2
Moncia Seles x3

Monica Seles:
Steffi Graf x3
ASV x2
Martina Navratilova
Mary Jo
Anke Huber
Jana Novotna

Of course it wouldn't be fair to say that this any conclusive sort of evidence; just an interesting little fact. Sometimes the real final ends up being the semi final as for whatever reason the two best players in the draw meet in the semis (the 2002 FO being a prime example).

It's funny how both Lindsay and Jennifer have won 3 Slams each, and for both, in two they beat Martina Hingis.

Oi you cheeky bugger, it is for information rather than discussion. There's really nothing to discuss I put it all there.

I will say though that of current players I think Serena and Venus have the most impressive scalp list in Grand Slam Finals :D

Closely followed by Lindsay...

Btw I agree with you Serena about Venus, Lindsay and Serena have the most impressive scalp lists. :) I can't believe that Venus and Martina have only ever played in one Grand Slam against each other though. :o

I think Serena and Jen haven't played that many finals together either only two I think. Amazing considering how many times they met.

:o If they had played more, Hingis would be in the 50's :D

I can't believe that. I suppose when they played Hingis was usually the top seed, and Serena was like 10th seed, so they usually met in the Qtrs or Semis.

Still I know whose record I would rather have :D

Also Steffi faced Navratilova there in 88 and 89 and only dropped sets to her so you've just gotta think if she hadn't been facing the greatest grass court player ever, then she probably would've won it twice in straight sets in those years...

It's interesting really though that Steffi won RG in straights a couple of times but never Wimbledon.

I think the Nav won Wimbledon 4 times without dropping a set
