Sofia, Paul Hunter was a well known snooker player who I loved and used to always watch his matches and want him to do well, then he got diagnosed with cancer in 2005 and i was sure he would beat the battle... and tonight he has died
My mates used to call me Paul Hunter aswell cos i played snooker all the time and was like a big fan of him and they said i looked like him :( well shocked right now.
The Dav - October 9, 2006 09:58 PM (GMT)
Absolutely terrible news, I wasn't a fan of his, but for someone to die at 27 is just heartbreaking, and very shocking! I knew his condition was very serious, but the news is so sudden, I didn't think he was in such bad health, he won some big titles, the masters three times, so he has a great legacy left behind, and he was a very popular figure also :(
My heart goes out to his family :( :(
Tennis_Mad_Andy - October 9, 2006 10:29 PM (GMT)
I hope you lot dont mind... But I'm just going to paste a bit of what is said about him on the world snooker website...
The three-times Masters champion from Leeds passed away at 8.20pm at Kirkwood Hospice in Huddersfield, five days before his 28th birthday.
The death of the popular Yorkshireman will bring immense sadness to the snooker world and to British sport.
Hunter was diagnosed 18 months ago with neuro-endocrine tumours, a rare form of cancer which causes slow-growing tumours in the lining of the body to release excessive amounts of hormones.
He underwent several gruelling courses of chemotherapy in hope of beating the disease, but to no avail. His condition deteriorated rapidly in recent weeks and he was taken into the hospice on Saturday.
Hunter leaves behind wife Lindsey and daughter Evie Rose, who was born on Boxing Day 2005.
World Snooker chairman Sir Rodney Walker said: "I’m sure that everyone who met Paul, as well as his millions of fans and the sporting public as a whole, will join me in sending most sincere sympthies to Lindsey, Paul’s parents, his family and friends.
"Paul was a man who had everything going for him - an oustanding talent, good looks, fame, riches, charm and a beautiful wife. This shows us just how quickly life can change.
"It’s a bitter blow for snooker but most importantly for his family and our thoughts are with them."
But Hunter’s most significant success came in snooker’s most prestigious invitation event - the Masters.
In 2001, he reached the final at Wembley for the first time and came from 7-3 down to beat Fergal O’Brien 10-9. His comeback was aided by a flurry of rapid high scoring as he rattled in four century breaks in six frames.
His media profile developed swiftly and he became known as the ’Beckham of the Baize’ for his glamorous image.
Hunter won the Masters twice more in the next three years, remarkably both times by a 10-9 scoreline after recovering an apparently insurmountable deficit.
In 2002 he came from 5-0 down to beat Mark Williams and in 2004 over 5million viewers on BBC Sport saw him beat Ronnie O’Sullivan having trailed 7-2.
When the diagnosis of cancer was announced in April last year, Hunter promised his fans that he would be as "tenacious and positive" in his fight against the disease as he had been throughout his snooker career.
Despite suffering from considerable pain as well as numbness in his limbs, he bravely competed on the circuit throughout the 2005/06 season. He subsequently announced his wish to take a break from snooker in order to receive more treatment.
His unselfish nature and appreciation of his support is underlined by an incident at the 2005 China Open in Beijing.
Following his first-round match, Hunter was requested for a press conference. When he did not appear within 20 minutes, his whereabouts was sought.
Hunter was soon discovered in the arena, patiently signing autographs and having photos taken with Chinese fans, and he remained there until every request was met. This was just a few days after he had been diagnosed with the disease which was to bring his end.
Last month, a charity event was staged by Hunter which could raise over £50,000 for the NET Patient Foundation.
:(

So sorry Andy you feel so sad. He was such a talented handsome guy its a real tragedy. Bear in mind it is extremley rare for one so young to die of colon cancer. It was probably secondary cancer to his testicular cancer.
Life can be very cruel. Especially when young people are concerned. That is why I do not have any religious beliefs at all.
How unfair for a young talented father with everything to live for dies and Ian Brady is still rotting in prison.
Queen Justine - October 9, 2006 11:25 PM (GMT)
I'm stunned, absolutely stunned! I just can't believe it! I thought he'd pull through it! OMG! This is awful. How awful for his wife and child and family.
I'm truly in shock, I really am.
Jill, I tend to agree with you about religious beliefs, but that conversation is for another thread.
Truly devasting. Paul was so good looking and was a very talented snooker player. He had such a good future to look forward to! Oh my ...

Its always hard to take when one is so young. But I stand by 100% what I said on religious beliefs. That is what is so bloody imoral.

Like Andy I'm a massive snooker fan,and this news takes on extra weight,as a very good friend of mine died of leukemia just last December. He was only 27 and is survived by his young wife, who is totally devasted.
This has shocked me,as I thought he was over the worst. What can you say at times like this? How fragile human life is.Condolances to his family, and for the rest of us,to celebrate life just like Paul Hunter did.
Selesfan - October 10, 2006 05:41 AM (GMT)
Everything happens for a reason. He is with God now, our Saviour. It is all a part of his divine plan. Still, I feel for his family of course. :(

my sympathies to the family, friends and fans of Paul Hunter, I didn't know who he was but my prayers are with you all
it is nice to know there are some other Christians on here :) It's truly been a bad week, not sure if this is appropriate for this thread but on Sunday Mark Porter a kiwi race driver died after a crash on friday, he was 31 and left behind his wife and 1 year old son. Also my grandfather died last week, it's times like this where my faith and my relationship with Jesus is the most comfort to me, my grandfather was a wonderful christian man and I know that although I'm sad I can rejoice now coz he is with God in heaven

Well yes I am religious, because my wife is. Through her I have seen the light
and path to god our Saviour. I strongly do believe everything happens for a reason, and when we die, we are with God.

Don't really know what to say :( Just wanted to paste in something I saw that someone had written on another forum I visit. Written better than anything I could do.
RIP Paul
| QUOTE (Linco) |
Incredibly sad news, a fantastic player of the game, genuine ambassador and role model for younger players of snooker - and as rightly pointed out, he had both style and substance, and surely would have been a future world champion.
There are a lot of players who I hold in contempt due to their attitude (Shaun Murphy, etc), but Paul Hunter was not one of them - he just looked good and ready around the table, and never shirked a challenge - which is possibly the highest compliment I can pay him. I genuinely can't recall the number of times he came back from a potential beating.
If you manage to acquire a copy of the game against Ronnie O' Sullivan in the UK Open final from a few years back, then do it - the measure of the man is in the judgement - and given that few consistently tamed the greatest player to ever grace the baize as he did, he judged it to perfection - I won't ruin it by telling you who won the game - but needless to say it was one of the finest displays of grit and determination I've ever witnessed - no mean feat in front of cameras, lights and a crowd against you - and even the loser took his hat off.
At times distracted, but mostly awesome. A terrible blow to the game, and he'll be sorely missed - a real 'player', in every sense, and if I was still a kid playing on a 6ft table, I'd feel a little lost.
A genuinely, brilliant player. LiN |

:( Oh this is so awful, was stunned when I heard this on the radio.
I used to watch a lot of snooker years ago, during the Jimmy White, Kirk Stevens, Ray Reardon era but not so much now. But I do know who this guy was and feel desperately sad for his young family left behind. I too thought he was through the worst, which makes it all the more shocking when you hear this.
God Bless.

Heard about it last night on sky sports news. Such a tragedy to happen, he was only young and had a young family. I'm not a snooker fan, but I knew of his condition, but I thought he was getting over it, so this has come as a huge shock to me.
RIP PAUL HUNTER :(
dl04 - October 10, 2006 02:25 PM (GMT)
Oh my god, i'm literally shocked :o :( :(
Not a particular fan of snooker of all, but i always used to watch his matches on tv as he looked very personable and enthralled in his snooker. Such a tragedy to die at 28, not even 30! Its just no age at all, and what an extreme loss of life :(
I did have a fear his cancer would get worse, but never to the fatal consequence. Have to admit though in his last tourny, he looked so frail. There were definitely signs that he may have no fight left for this disease. unfortunately that proved to be the case
RIP Paul, and my heart goes out to his wife and little girl. cannot imagine the heartbreak. I wish them all well :(

SuperBRAT - October 11, 2006 12:12 PM (GMT)
Yes looking back on Paul's short career he had 3 brilliant wins at the prestigious Masters tournament. Each win was a huge comeback - 2001 from 7-3 down against Feargal O-Brien, 2002 from 5-0 down against the Welsh Potting Machine himself Mark Williams, and in 2004 from 7-2 down against the legendary Ronnie O'Sullivan. In each case he had to go to a deciding frame and won 10-9 :o Now that is some record at the masters and some great comebacks, he really stamped his mark on that tournament. The Masters is a prestigious invitation only tournament where the world's top 16 compete with a wildcard and a qualifier (correct me if I am wrong, that is what I last read). It has been won by some legendary names like White, Reardon, Davis, O'Sullivan, Hendry, Higgins.
Here are some Master's History Stats and Paul is right up there:
1. the Masters started in 1975 so in 32 years the players with the most wins are:
Stephen Hendry - 6 wins
Cliff Thorburn/Steve Davis/Paul Hunter - 3 wins
2. only 3 players have won 3 or more titles over a four year period
Hendry (who won 5 consecutive 1989-93)
Thorburn (1983, 1985/86) Hunter (2001/02/04)
3. only two players have ever defended their first Masters title-
Hendry in 1990
Hunter in 2002
4. only 3 players have ever defended/won consecutive Masters Titles
Hendry - 1990/91/92/93
Thorburn - 1986
Hunter - 2002
Apart form the above, the only players who have won more than one Masters are Alex Higgins, Mark Williams and Ronnie O'Sullivan.
And also NO player has ever won 3 titles on a deciding frame with a score of 10-9! :D
So Hunter is only really overshadowed by Hendry at the Masters - and who isn't generally overshadowed by the most successful of all time? And matched by Thorburn, and Davis in titles although his were spread over about 16 years! So a cracking record IMO. Winning 3 Masters puts Paul in an elite group of Hendry, Davis and Thorburn and the only two who could enter this in the near future are Williams and O'Sullivan.
Hope you enjoyed my stats! :D My favourite record of the Masters though is Steve Davis's. He showed what a great player he was by winning his 3rd title in 1997, 15 years after his first win in 1982 (he also won in 1988). He beat Ronnie O too. What longevity and what a great career  That was one of my favourite snooker moments and I cheered the house down when the last ball went in. What a great snooker moment that was.
The Dav - October 11, 2006 05:09 PM (GMT)
I know SB, that is an incredible record he has at the Masters :D I remember watching the 2004 final and I was rooting for Ronnie, but he came back yet again, funnily enough, his best shot at winning the World champs was in 2003, but he lost a lead to Ken :D He probably would have won as he was in such good form, shame Ken blew it though in the final

Oh yes, I remember that at the World in 2003. What a comeback form Ken though! :o I think I've said this to you before, Doherty isn;t the best player with the biggest weapons and spectacular shots, but he certainyl makes the best of what he has through his mental toughness and dogged determination - in fact he really stands out in that department does "Crafty Ken" and his tactics and hanging in there are among the best in the game IMO. :ok:
