Title: What's your game like?

LDF - September 11, 2006 07:01 PM (GMT)
I'm surprised this thread hasn't been started yet; though we have discussed it quite a lot in Heyupp

Anyway, I'm a pretty flat hitter off both wings (which comes more naturally with an eastern grip on the forehand). My backhand tends to be the more consistent of the two strokes, but I'm more likely to control a rally and win the point with my forehand. That said, they are equally good. I love employing the reverse forehand :D

Whilst I can mix it up with drop shots, slice and lobs, my net play is mediocre at best; I'm currently trying to improve that. Primarily though my game is hitting hard, flat strokes from the baseline. My serve can be a weapon when it's on, but can also collapse if I'm having a bad day. When I serve well, my game as a whole definitely gets better. I'm not a great mover, so I like to end the points quickly.

I wonder who that sounds like? roflmao

Lindsay 'LDF' Davenport

Big two handed forehand and a slice backhand. Deep groundstrokes with masses of spin. Can hit hard and use angles/spin. Backhand is predominantly slice. I chase alot of balls. Good slice forehand when playing one handed [ the squash shot]. Can play drop shot. Serve is average. A few DFs but becoming more of a weapon. Movement is good and always fight on court. Have a tendancy to grunt a bit [not Sharapova style  ] Like to play long points; particularly enteratining ones. Forehand is consistent side.

Fave shot:

Cross court forehand

I can't say I've personally seen anyone use a two-handed forehand...

I don't grunt myself, though you might hear some quiet ones when the match goes on

I <3 my two handed forehand. Its been worked on alot more than my backhand. My forehand is good on the run.

LDF, the similarities between you and Davenport are extremely evident

BTW my grunt is like Federer's run. Only when i'm putting in a lot of effort.

LDF the resembalance is uncanny roflmao

Well mines not much different to my fav player either so i cant talk

I have a very venus-esque game. I have a great first serve when its going in, but the second serve is a shambles at times, but is getting better. I'm quite tall so have great reach and can get a lot of balls back with intrest as well( i aint no clijsters ). My forehands my best shot, i like to leap on it at times( which can produce some horrific shot-making) but generally is a very penetrating shot. The only part of my game that isnt like Venus's is the backhand- its one handed and i slice it  Its a very consistent shot and its great for approach shots.

I'm not a bad volleyer, my backhand volley has some substance on the court and my forehand volley is improving :)

LDF - September 11, 2006 07:25 PM (GMT)
My volleys in general are a bit

Definitely the part of my game that needs most work, but I am willing to do that; I like coming to the net every now and then :)

welshboy91 - September 11, 2006 07:26 PM (GMT)
I forgot my volleys.

Good dry volley off both sides and a solid overhead [hit with little technique].

My volleys below the net are ok. They are nothing special. I'm nt a fan of coming to the net though. Although, I am trying to do it more.

I actually like coming to the net, i love to hit the smash, i actually hope my opponents throw up the defensive lob

I'm not going to drive-volley ever again though roflmao

sir matchstickmen - September 12, 2006 12:54 PM (GMT)
Well I only just saw this thread, thought i'd better put my game forward! :D

Cos of my 6"5 frame and big shoulders, I have a pretty big game which is all about putting pressure on opponents. I have a big forehand, even better one-handed backhand which I can land on a sixpence, slice, flat or topspin, and I like to get my opponent moving around and get to the net as soon as I get a chance.

Oh, and I have my elephant gun serve! :D

Brakkus - October 6, 2006 01:52 PM (GMT)
It's funny because I used to play the game when I was younger and gave up for football.
I moved out to the country later on and now taking up Tennis again in the last 4 years,I made a sincere effort to coach myself. There is a club here, but time is an issue for me.
I used to think I could go for winners all the time, but now as my technique has improved,I have become somewhat semi-aggressive.
I'm only 5ft8 so I like to use my strokes to work my opponent.I try and pin them in the backhand corner with my two-hander,and slice with one hand.
I normally will allow my opponent to change the direction on the ball, waiting for my chance on shorter balls.
If they are slower,I try for the forehand winner,or backhand slice approach,as I seem to have good feel for volleys.

Russiafan - October 6, 2006 02:34 PM (GMT)
My game has gone from bad to worse over the last year, but I now have a coach so hopefully things will pick up. I have a pretty heavy topsin forehand - comes from playing too much on clay over the last few summers. My single handed back hand is pretty solid but under pressure lacks depth. My serve is similar to my favourite lady Elena's.... a belter followed by a slow ball followed by a double fault....

Actica - October 6, 2006 10:08 PM (GMT)
My serve isn't that good, I have a solid and powerful forehand that is reliable thank god and a backhand that when works is a gem!

My overall technique is fairly poor as well and I'm getting lessons to sort it out! :P

I am pretty flat on both wings, but if i do hit topspin it is always on the forehand side never the backhand.
My serves is consistent although i use a an extreme grip to generate more power because i am only 5,5!
I only really volley when it is a put away one striaght into the open side of the court. Even though sometimes i do hitsome awesome drop vollies.
Never use drop shot because everybody in the junior game is too quick for them ands it like a set up shot.
My footwork for shots is decent, but i am only reasonably fast.
