Title: US Open Men's Semis
mightyjeditribble - September 9, 2006 06:42 PM (GMT)
I don't know if anyone else watched the Fed v Davydenko semifinal. I felt that, as I had feared, it didn't quite have the tension that you would like in a semi. Roger played very precise, but not terribly exciting tennis most of the time, just hitting precise shots from the baseline. On a few points, he let out the magic, but overall the result never looked in doubt, and he never looked like he was completely fired up for this. Let's hope that Roddick v Youzhny provides a bit more sizzle!
Nick Havoc - September 9, 2006 07:31 PM (GMT)
Didn't watch it, but I really didn't expect Federer to have much of a tough time with Davydenko. I think the final might be a good one, though. We'll have to wait and see.
Nick Havoc - September 9, 2006 07:33 PM (GMT)
I see Youzhny is up an early break on Roddick, but it looks like he's about to break back.
And he does, with little effort, as Youzhny double-faults on break point.
3-3

Thanks Al! :ok:
The beeb has this comment on the match..
Roddick 5-4 Youzhny
An enormous ace signs off another love-service game, this time for Roddick, and a tie-break looks on the cards at the moment.
Roddick 5-5 Youzhny
Another Youzhny love-service game - it's like watching a Wimbledon final from 10 years ago. Richard Krajicek would be proud.
Is this a fair observation??

Hmm... during one point in the match he did a 'time out' sign to Federer after Fed had played a pretty good rally... was apprently a nice good-humoured moment.. :)
Mind you, he then proceeded to win 4 points in a row to break Fed!
It sounds as if the opening set took the wind out of his sails, and then he was playing catchup from then on..

No, not a nice surprise!! How about a nice surprise if the finalist took Federer to a 5th set?
And then Fed still wins :)

That's more like it! This first set certainly was a thriller, which great fights from both men, but Misha eventually taking the t/b on Roddick's serve. This one could well go the distance - it may well prove to be much more exciting than the actual final (but I don't want to be too pessimistic).
Big Al - September 9, 2006 08:11 PM (GMT)
Youzhnys level has dropped in the second set and Roddick hits a forehand winner to break for 3-0
mightyjeditribble - September 9, 2006 08:14 PM (GMT)
Roddick shows excellent mental strength in his reaction to losing the tie-break. He breaks Youzhny twice in a row to go up 3-0. It's maybe a bit too early to say that the second set is as good as over, but it's certainly time for Misha to regroup!

Hmm.. lots of UE's from Mikhail...
Looks like A-Rod has all but wrapped up the set..
Can Mikhail raise his game to get the match back to the contest that it was in the first set??
mightyjeditribble - September 9, 2006 08:20 PM (GMT)
Youzhny can't to much right at the moment. On the first point of his service game, he hits a volley into the net when he has the whole court to choose from. He doesn't do much better for the rest of the game, and hands Roddick another break (to 15). Andy will now serve for the set, and a tasty bagel. Is the match as good as over already, or will the Russian find his form again to challenge Roddick like he did in the first?
Big Al - September 9, 2006 08:23 PM (GMT)
Its still early days but with that bagel the momentums firmly with Roddick. He's swaggering about, pumping his fists and back to his routine of big serve and forehand.
petalp - September 9, 2006 08:23 PM (GMT)
Quick interlude.. Bjorkman and Mirnyi are playing Damm and Paes in the men's doubles final right now..
mightyjeditribble - September 9, 2006 08:24 PM (GMT)
Youzhny goes up to 15-30 on Roddick's serve, but his woes aren't over - at 30-30, a ball just long gives Roddick set point, and a shot into the net gives Roddick the set. The match is even at 1-1. Being bageled can't be good for the Russian's confidence, surely. Of course, as Jimmy Connors said (I think in the Wimbledon final), he never liked to bagel his opponents, as it makes them mad. So perhaps that will happen now?

Really? That's a bit annoying, that the final is on at the same time as the men's semis. Anyway, I hope Jonas and Max win!
mightyjeditribble - September 9, 2006 08:32 PM (GMT)
Misha has to battle for his first service game early in the third set. Howeve, he is looking much improved over the last set, and eventually holds, after saving a break point.
petalp - September 9, 2006 08:32 PM (GMT)
I'm backing Jonas and Max too (much as a I like Paes).. they are up 3-2 in the first set, all on serve..

Go Andy! Go Max/ Jonas! :D

:ok: Great to see Jonas winning yet another Slam .
mightyjeditribble - September 9, 2006 08:36 PM (GMT)
After Andy complains about Misha not being ready when he is going to serve, the Russian wins the point of the match so far: He looks to be struggling to reach a volley by Roddick, only to put it away out of the American's reach at an insane angle.
He brings it back to deuce with another great point, but two points later, Roddick still holds. On serve early in the third.
mightyjeditribble - September 9, 2006 08:51 PM (GMT)
Much more comfortable service holds now from both players. Still on serve.
Big Al - September 9, 2006 09:02 PM (GMT)
Roddick holds easily to love, 5-5. Looks like another tiebreak.
mightyjeditribble - September 9, 2006 09:10 PM (GMT)
T/B!
The way this set has gone, I expect this to be close, but Roddick to have the edge. But, of course, in a tiebreak everything can happen.
