Matches of the day:
Dementieva v Zvonareva
Vaidisova v Jankovic
Mahut v Davydenko [i think theres gonna be an upset]
Henman v Federer
dl04 - September 1, 2006 08:28 AM (GMT)
Matches of the day for me are( on the womens side)
Jankovic vs Vaidisova( i actually predict a Jankovic win)
Dementieva vs Zvonareva
GS2 - September 1, 2006 08:40 AM (GMT)
Has there ever been a slam when so many seeds made the third round! I know the womens draw often sees easy wins for the top ladies but this year's event seems even more extreme than usual - Only 2 of 16 in the bottom half of the draw are unseeded. Ah well at least we have some cracking third round matches - let's face it I think we'd all rather have the better players facing off than many third rounds like the Razzano v Kanepi match we have in the top half!
Today's big matches.
Vaidisova v Jankovic
Vaidisova has beaten Jelena all three times they've played but Jankovic has been in great form recently and Nicole was unconvincing in her second round win. This could be a very tight match.
Rezai v Kirilenko
Kirilenko has just had her first back to back wins for a while but Rezai has just managed two big wins and is in her 2nd slam 3rd round this year. Another one that's hard to call.
Zvonareva v Dementieva
Probably the match of the day as the two Russians face off. Both have been in good form recently and Elena loves it here so she should close this out but you can't count Vera out nowadays. Amazingly they've only played once before - in the 4th round here two years ago. Elena took it in three sets and should do again today.
Schiavone v Peer
After holding of the challenge of Mirza - Schiavone will have to fight off the fast rising Peer. This one could go either way but I reckon Schiavone may have too much guile for the Israeli.
Henin-Hardenne v Sugiyama
Sugiyama is always capable of giving the top players trouble but it's unlikely she'll manage it against an in form Justine. They last met in Indian Wells where Justine only gave up 3 games - I would expect this to be closer but for Justine to come through in straight sets.
dl04 - September 1, 2006 08:51 AM (GMT)
Yeah i cant see sugiyama doing much damage. the only way she could hurt Justine is with her movement, consistency and taking the ball early. These only seem effective though if Justine isnt on form. I expect jUstine to win with a relatively easy scoreline i.e 6-3 6-2...........
Scotsguy - September 1, 2006 09:16 AM (GMT)
Women's third round draw

(14)Schiavone vs (21)Peer
(28)Sugiyama vs (2)Henin-Hardenne
LDF - September 1, 2006 09:59 AM (GMT)
Wow, just 2 unseeded players in the bottom half :o
Jankovic v Vaidisova will be interesting. Nicole needed to three sets to overcome Jidkova (who hasn't been in very good form recently), which doesn't indicate she's playing at a high standard. She'll probably have the mental edge too, considering the H2H. That said, Jelena has been in great form on the US hard courts and has the game to take Nicole out.
Dementieva v Zvonareva should be good. I'd expect Elena to come through, but Vera could definitely take her to 3 sets or even spring an upset...
LDF - September 1, 2006 10:22 AM (GMT)
The weather forecast for the day is good, though there's a chance that the night session will be interrupted by rain (particularly the Safin-Nalbandian match).
The forecast for Saturday is atrocious; a 100% chance of heavy rain and strong winds

She came into the tournament with a hip injury (which caused her to withdraw from Sydney). However, it didn't seem to hamper her too much, and she said that it was causing her trouble
