Title: Mac & Pete to play doubles???

Nick Havoc - August 24, 2006 03:19 PM (GMT)
Posted this on the Heyupp thread, but I thought I'd repeat it here:

I saw part of "The Late Show with David Letterman" last night. He had SuperBrat on as one of his guests (John McEnroe, that is). He talked up Federer as one of the best ever and Nadal as a fantastic young player. Agassi was his pick of who he would like to see win, but like the rest of us, thinks the odds slim. He also talked up Roddick a bit and seemed to think the pairing with Connors was a good move for him and perhaps part of the reason he won last week.

They talked a little about Mac's doubles title earlier in the year, and John mentioned that there might be a possibility of him teaming up with Sampras for a doubles competition some time next year . . .

Would be amazing if it happens! would this be on the seniors or the main ATP Tour or just as an exhibitiom? or was that not specified?!

I was gonna say Nick, I have never been on Letterman .... yet! roflmao Maybe next season ;)

That sounds great, hope they do it. I tell you what though, sampras better get training cos Mac is probably fitter than he is despite being much older. I agree with him about the Connors pairing with Roddick. What a great mentor he must be, and tbh if Roddick cant; get it together now Jimmy's on board he never will. Lucky to have him. Mac has always rated Fed form hsi early days, and so have I. He was sayign that he'd win Wimbers one day, it took a while and Mac decided he;d best not say it again on the BBC wimby show, and then it happened!

Yeah. It was a pretty good interview. He poked a little fun at himself over the doubles victory, saying that, after Jonas made the semis at Wimbledon, it showed everybody the real reason they were able to win that doubles title.

Dave also asked him about drug use in the sport. He felt like there was some of that going on, but he believed it was much less prevalent in tennis than in many other sports. Then he took a little jab, saying that of the six players who had been caught out for drugs in the last year or two (I forget exactly what time-frame he cited), five were from Argentina.

Yes I always find Mac really funny. If he is appearign on any show here I will always tune in, same goes for Navratilova. She's great fun and very sharp. Well on the drugs stuff, he has a fair point doesn't he? There has to be something dodgy going on in Argentina imo, and I'm not being racist in saying so as has been 'suggested' to others when they have said it in the past. The Argentines should be taking thsi seriously, because if they don't they onyl have themselves to blame for their tarnished and dubious reputation. I'd liek to think that if that happened her, we;d tackle it straight away. :ok:

I'm not sure mac is right with his facts....

the last 5 (in the ATP) were: Mark Nielsen (NZ), Karol Beck (SVK), Mariano Hood (ARG) & Holger Fischer (GER) & Younes El Aynaoui (MAR).

On the news of mac& Pete in doubles - i think that would be great in puling in audience and who knows they might even cause 1 or 2 upsets....(Mcenroe won a title with bjorkman earlier this year didnt he? That shows he can still compete...)

Nick Havoc - August 25, 2006 04:13 PM (GMT)
Thanks for that, Mkk. I know Argentina has been having more problems than most countries, but I was a little suspect of Mac's comment of five of the last six. I was a bit surprised when I heard him say that.

Id love to see Mac and Pete playing together.

I know SB I'll watch anything with Navratilova too, she was so witty on Johnathan Ross before Wimbledon.

Anotehr dream pairing of mine for doubles would be Steffi Graf and Navrat playing the seniors at Wimbledon, they'd surely win. It's been Novotna and Austin facing each other in all the finals recently; we want a change roflmao

Perhaps they may play seniors now Agassi will be retired as will Navrat. Navrat said she might be commentating next year at Wimbs.

BTW now Pete is getting back into tennis a little is there any chance of him doing some commentating do you reckon?
