welshboy91 - August 23, 2006 05:32 PM (GMT)
There are quite a few good matches there:

Dulko-Jankovic
Myskina-Azarenka
Hingis-Peng

I just hope Makiri can win her first round [Schruff pulled out injured of the event shes playing] and her 2nd round. On her day, this would be a very easy draw

SuperBRAT - August 23, 2006 07:02 PM (GMT)
Good Lord, Maria's is a cakewalk whereas Amelie's is the trickiest I'd say. Dav and JHH have go tit easy until they potentially meet, assumign they both get there.

SuperBRAT - August 23, 2006 07:04 PM (GMT)
Assuming I read it right, potential for another Amelie v JHh final here. :)

dl04 - August 23, 2006 07:08 PM (GMT)
I can see a match where there's going to be the most errors:

Sprem vs Mirza roflmao

Venus draws Domachowska, which isnt that bad, but Marta can be dangerous sometimes and venus hasnt played a lot of tennis. Still hopefully she can move through :D

ObL!v!0N - August 23, 2006 07:10 PM (GMT)
Hingis will ease all the way to the title! :D

Well they are number one and two seeds SB

Yes I think Amelie has the toughest; although she had the toughest draw at Wimbledon too and she won

Can Amelie repeat Hingis' 1997 acheivement? What's more contrasting her 3 withdrawals at the AO with two hard fought title wins. It's really anyone's to win if you ask me.

dl04 - August 23, 2006 07:47 PM (GMT)
Yes SW19, Mauresmo could possibly match Hingis achievements set in 1997. Serena's 2002 record was the more impressive though i feel :D

O without a doubt Dl :D

Serena was undefeated in Grand Slams in 2002 and only dropped 2 sets in taking 3 Grand Slam Titles.

I was joking about Serena doing the Golden Slam in 2008 the other day but even I don't think Serena could match that level of dominance again.

GS2 - August 24, 2006 09:48 AM (GMT)
My little draw analysis.

First Eighth

Mauresmo has actually quite a nice run in for her first few matches - her third round opponent is Dechy who hasn't done much of note lately & pulled out injured of New Haven. The big question is who'll she'll meet in the 4th Round. I don't think it will be Hantuchova who I expect to lose to Serena in the 2nd Round (ending Daniella's consistent run in slams having made the at least the 3rd round in the last 10 or so) but if Jankovic & Zvonareva can beat Serena then Ivanovic certainly can especially if she shows her Montreal form.

Mauresmo v Serena/Ivanovic

Second Eighth

Pretty nice draw for Hingis - after Peng Shuai in the first round anyway. Probably Zvonareva in the 3rd round & i'd expect Martina to win here though it will be closer than their AO Match. After that probably Safina who Hingis should handle comfortably.

Hingis v Safina

Third Eighth

Sharapova has Krajicek in the first round which is potentially tricky but she shouldn't have too many problems. After that it's a stroll to the quarters unless Pierce can find her form fast. Mary has her own problems with Vesnina in the 1st round then potentially Li Na (though she was injured in New Haven) or Shenay Perry who's been playing well lately.

Sharapova v Pierce

Fourth Eighth

Well this is the battle of who can last the distance! Myskina who may pull out with injury and hasn't won a match in a meaningful tournament since Wimbledon, Petrova who hasn't won a match since May & Chakvetadze who has pulled out injured of her last two tournaments! That leaves Golovin who looks in a great position to reach her first slam QF.

Myskina v Golovin

Fifth Eighth

Kuznetsova hasn't been great lately but should make the 4th round - I don't think Zheng Jie has got enough to stop her - there she'll probably face Vaidisova who may face a battle against Jankovic.

Kuznetsova v Vaidisova

Sixth Eighth

This one is really up in the air. With the big question being what can Venus do. I don't see her getting past Dementieva who always plays well here. Who'll be Elena's 4th round opponent is also uncertain since Groenefeld, Kirilenko, Stosur & Safarova are all lurking but i'm going to go for the powerful German.

Dementieva v Groenefeld

Seventh Eighth

As at Wimbledon the weakest 5-8 seed (Schnyder) has been paired with the strongest 9-12 seed (Davenport). Lindsay should come through this pretty easy. I think Schnyder will make it as well as there's no one too tricky in her way.

Davenport v Schnyder

Eighth Eighth

Justine should have too much for Molik in the 2nd Round & Sugiyama in the 3rd. I'm not convinced about Schiavone's recent form & think she could be upset by Peer.

Henin-Hardenne v Peer.

She can't, as she never made the French Open final

LDF - August 25, 2006 06:33 PM (GMT)
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060825/ap_on_...vwilliams_out_1

NEW YORK - Two-time champion Venus Williams withdrew from the U.S. Open on Friday, citing the left wrist injury that's sidelined her since Wimbledon.

"I have many great memories from competing at the U.S. Open, and I regret that I will not be able to participate in 2006," Williams said in a statement released by her agent.

"I will miss the excitement of competing in front of the New York fans at one of the premier sporting events in the world. I look forward to returning in 2007."

Williams, who was seeded 30th for the tournament, won the U.S. Open in 2000 and 2001, part of her collection of five Grand Slam titles.

The Open begins Monday.

Me too

She was really coming into form as Dav said she played excellently against Mattek and then something seemed to go wrong. She said that her wrist was bothering her during the Jankovic match but I think something might have gone wrong during the Raymond encounter.

It just plain sucks; Venus had an awesome clay season considering she was just coming back from injury and lack of match practice and then things go awry for her fav time of year when I enjoy watch Vee play most. Even though she hasn't got to the final in a while the Open won't be the same without her :(
