Title: Murray set for top 3 in USO series

Scotsguy - August 19, 2006 06:23 AM (GMT)
Currently the standings are as follow

1-Federer 100pts
2-Murray 80pts
3-Gonzalez 79pts
4-Tursunov 72pts
5-Gasquet 70pts
6=Blake/Haas/Clement 50pts
9-Roddick 47pts

Murray gains 25pts for his QF shwing giving him a total of 105pts
Federer remains on 100pts because you need to reach the third round to get more points.....
Gonzalez is currently in the lead with 124pts if he loses in the semis and will win the series definately if he beats Roddick
Roddick has the potential to win the series again but must win Cincinatti, knocking Gonzalez out in the semis which would give him a total of 147pts to Gonzalez'z 124pts, putting Gonzalez 2nd and Murray 3rd......If Roddick beats Gonzo but loses in the final, he will winish with 117pts and therefor 2nd.....
Ferrero is also in with a shot for 3rd if he wins at Cincinatti as is Robredo as both are currently on 15pts and winning would put them above Murray.......

This is all a bit confusing and i've confused myself few times but i think the only way for Murray to not get a top 3 finish is if Roddick beats Gonzalez and thenloses to Robredo/Ferrero in the final.....
Murray will finish 3rd if Roddick wins the tourney
Or he could finish 2nd if Ginzalez wins the tourney

This is all worked out by me so probably wrong at some point, if you do see anyhting that isn't correct just say so..

JFK - August 19, 2006 11:36 AM (GMT)
Here are the standings so far, after QFs in Cincy:

Player CU QF
Federer 100 100
Murray 80 105
Gonzalez 79 124
Tursunov 72 72
Gasquet 70 70
Blake 50 50
Clement 50 50
Hass 50 65
Roddick 47 92
Ferrero 0 45
Robredo 0 45

As Ferrero and Robredo have not got into the 3rd round of the US Open series, they have 0 points going into this tournament, and will not pass Murray, even if they win the championship. Murray cannot come fourth as he will have 105 points.

Results of the SF
IF RODDICK WINS but loses the final, his points will increase to 117 and Gonzalez will stay at 124. Ferrero or Robredo will have 100 points.
Gonzalez 124
Roddick 117
Murray 105
Federer 100
Ferr/Robre 100

IF RODDICK WINS and wins the final, his points will increase to 147 and Gonzalez will stay at 124. Ferrero or Robredo will have 70 points.
Roddick 147
Gonzalez 124
Murray 105
Federer 100

IF GONZALEZ WINS but loses the final, his points will increase to 149 and Roddick will stay at 92. This will mean he will have a 49 point lead over Federer and Ferrero/Robredo who will both have 100.
Gonzalez 149
Murray 105
Federer 100
Ferrero/Robredo 100
Roddick 92 - cannot come first.

IF GONZALEZ WINS and wins the final, his points will increase to 179 and Roddick will stay at 92. This will mean he will win the US Open Series and get double the prize money in the US Open, as he has more than a 50 point lead going into the final event. Ferrero/Robredo will get 70 points.
Gonzalez 179 - first place.
Murray 105
Federer 100
Roddick 92

However, New Haven is to follow and there are 50 points for the winner. As Murray probably will not enter. He will stay at 105 points and can easily be knocked off by Federer, Roddick if he loses against Gonzalez, the winner of Ferrero/Robredo, Hass, Tursunov or Gasquet.

Assuming all get byes in New Haven,
Federer needs to win 2 matches to pass Murray. Roddick will need to win three (12 points is not enough). the winner of Ferrero/Robredo will need to win 4 mathces to draw if that don't win the final and 2 matches to pass Murray if they win the final. Tursunov will need to get into the final to pass murray, while Gasquet will draw and need to win the tournament to pass Murray. Hass must win the tournament to pass Murray.

If Murray wants to, he could enter New Haven and play to the round of 16, where 12 points will eliminate Hass from getting third place and force Gasquet and Tursunov to win. The winner of Ferrero/Robredo will also need to win New Haven if they don't win Cincy. If they do win Cincy, 3 matches are required pass Murray. Federer will also need to win 3 matches and if Roddick does not win Cincy, then he must get to the round of 16 to ensure Murray does not come level with him/ pass him.

It is really complicated....

I may be wrond as will - I think Ferrero and Robredo haven't scored anything this year.

Scotsguy - August 19, 2006 12:55 PM (GMT)
I thought Ferrero and Robredo both made the 3rd round of Toronto which gets you 15pts???

JFK - August 19, 2006 04:00 PM (GMT)
Ferrero got to round 2 (last 32)

Scotsguy - August 20, 2006 11:10 PM (GMT)
1. Andy Roddick (USA) 147
2. Fernando Gonzalez (CHI) 124
3. Andy Murray (GBR) 105
4. Dmitry Tursunov (RUS) 72
5. Tommy Haas (GER) 65
6. (T) James Blake (USA) 50
Arnaud Clement (FRA) 50
8. Robby Ginepri (USA) 49

These are the final standings for the USO series, apparently New Haven doesn't count  , I think the top 3 are pretty surprsing, nobody thought Roddick would be able to get back on form, Gonzalez was never really considered and Murray well what a few weeks it's been for him...and none of the finalists were in the top 10 prior to the series,.....Federer came 4th with 100pts but because he only played 1 event he wasn't eligable for it....

1. Maria Sharapova (RUS) 122
2. Kim Clijsters (BEL) 120
3. Patty Schnyder (SUI) 80
4. Elena Dementieva (RUS) 75
5. Nicole Vaidisova (CZE) 67
6. Jelena Jankovic (SCG) 50
7. (T) Vera Zvonareva (RUS) 27
Ana Ivanovic (SCG) 27

Now Ivanovic could win the series if she wins Montreak but it'd be a bit of a hollow win considering the field at Montreal......But these standings have been a bit more predictable than the mens

The top 5 men are not playing in New Haven, and with a maximum of 50 points on offer, Blake can't finish in the top three so Roddick, Gonzalez and Murray will get the extra prize money in the US Open.

SuperBRAT - August 21, 2006 01:19 PM (GMT)
well great showing for Murray. :ok:

9mmSuzi - August 21, 2006 02:12 PM (GMT)
Very encouraging result for Murray, can't say if it will make the actual tournament any easier, but certainly a good confidence booster.

Just read this article by Murray's "mom":

The last bit about the rapping and her response? Less than enamoured with that, I have to say. Pathetic..

I disagree with the razzmatazz that she is raving about either. Unnecessary imo.

I'd rather have rock and roll-style tennis (Gonzo, for example?) than the rock n roll trimmings, thanks.. Not being a curmudgeon, but the tension of a good tennis match is plenty to be getting on with, you know what I mean??

Big Al - August 25, 2006 08:24 PM (GMT)
Totally agree Petalp. I never heard about all these sideshows. All I care about is what happens on the court, and in that respect the US Open has been a real cauldron over the years. Hopefully Murray will let his tennis do the talking and be fit enough to do some real damage. :)
