Title: The year

The pro-season takes up 11 months of the year; during the breaks you get, you have to train anyway. That is one of the reasons why there are so many injuries. Thoughts?

The season probably is too long. I'm not totally sure how it compares to, say, 20-25 years ago? I wouldn't be surprised if they play many more tournaments now.

I'd say that another reason is simply that this is now an age of power hitting. Everyone puts everything into their shots, (so much so that for example the one handed backhand is sadly becoming a rarity). it's 2 handed shots, using every sinew that a player can muster to get that extra edge. Bam! Bam! Bam!

So, players push themsleves to their limits, and the women seem especially susceptible.

So, 2 reasons: number of tournaments, and the way that the game is played these days.

I can't see the seasons being shortened though. It's the same way in other sports. i read recently that there are far more international cricket matches now than 20 years ago, for example. Players do complain of burnout, but precious little is being done, and is likely to be done.

So, the solution is for players to pace themselves, and not play every tournament going. This is where good coaches are needed. The danger is that the younger players like Gasquet, Monfils, Rafa, Murray, Djokovic might risk burnout whilst they are still developing. Once you play in a tournament, then you have points to defend in future years. Why not avoid that tournament and cherry pick if possible? The women all seem very injury-prone, and the trick to high ranking seems partly to be to stay healthy at the moment!
