Title: Referee Goals

I was just thinking whether or not a goal has ever been deflected in of a referee and has it stood or been disallowed? Anyone know?

Im hoping you will know this one Sam, after all, Leicester you use a little help from the ref at the minute ;)

I think it would count. Usually if the ball hits the ref, in the middle of the pitch, the game is carried on, so I don't see any reason why it wouldn't. I think I remember before that someone's shot hit the ref and scored, and the goal stood.

I don't know if it's happened in a big game, but i'm sure it would count Liam! :D

I found this amusing snippet on google meanwhile...

"An Essex referee scored a goal for a football team who were losing 18-1, because he felt sorry for them. Brian Saville brought the ball down from a corner and volleyed it into the net. Ignoring the fact he had handled the ball before shooting, he signalled a goal and ran back to the halfway line to cheers from supporters.

Amateur league side Wimpole 2001 were losing to Earls Colne at the time. Players from both teams saw the funny side and congratulated Mr Saville on his skills.

He told BBC Radio Five Live: "I was the ref, so I didn't see the handball. I just signaled a goal and went roaring up the field." Half of the fans were standing in bewilderment, the other half were cheering," he added. Mr Saville said although some of his footballing peers may frown on the incident it proves referees can enjoy the game as much as
players.

Earls Colne president Barry Mortimer said the incident showed the match had been played in a good spirit."

I dont know whether it has happened but it would count as a goal because the referee is part of the field of play .
