Title: Rogers Cup Montreal
liam_valid - August 14, 2006 09:05 PM (GMT)
No upsets so far, although Dechy is a set down to Oblizer (?who). I am upset Mary is not playing but see this as a great chance for two of my other faves-Myskina and Hingis-to face each other in the semis. Although i cant see any of them getting past Kim in the final. Still, atranger things have happened ;)
GS2 - August 15, 2006 04:07 PM (GMT)
First upset of the tournament.
16th seed Li Na loses 6-4, 6-2 to the world number 333 Marie Eve Pelletier.
Bit of a bad loss from the rising Chinese player who has just entered the top 20 but a nice result for the home crowd.
dl04 - August 15, 2006 04:11 PM (GMT)
I've just seen that match and Li Na was just terrible. She had a 3-1 lead in the first and then just had a whole episode full of wild errors. All Pelletier did was hit the ball back, she hit no winners at all i believe.
GS2 - August 15, 2006 04:20 PM (GMT)
They don't have the number of winners in the stats on the live scores.
What stats they do have don't make good reading for Li Na though - Pelletier won 75% points on first serve compared to Li Na's 42%!
Pelletier converted all 5 break points she had though from what you've said DL it doesn't sound like she had much to do with it!
GS2 - August 15, 2006 04:55 PM (GMT)
Apparently Davenport wanted to get into Montreal at the last minute but wasn't allowed due to WTA rules!
Are they mad have they not seen how weak this field is!!
Petrova who has lost two opening rounds is the 2nd highest ranked player in the draw then comes Kuznetsova who hasn't played since Wimbledon - both could go out early and then they'll be hardly anyone left!
The Canadian Open is one of the more successful events on the WTA Tour but that won't continue if you get more years like this!
petalp - August 15, 2006 10:00 PM (GMT)
Hmm.. it's so early on in this tournament, and the final already looks likely to be:
Clijsters/ Vaidisova v Hingis/ Myskina
Will be a surprise if it turns out any other way. Maybe Safina and Jankovic as 'possibles' too..?
GS2 - August 16, 2006 04:50 PM (GMT)
Jankovic looking very good against Schiavone 6-1, 6-4. (She's now on the verge of the top 20 and has pretty much nothing to defend for the rest of the year so could make the top 15.)
Dechy beats Kirlenko 6-4, 6-4
Perry's good form continues beating Groenefeld 7-6, 6-2.
Safina comfortable against Cara Black 6-2, 6-2.

Hmm.. I quite like Schiavone, as she has a sort of bustling, all-action game. Seems to not be progressing in many tournaments though..
Good result for JJ though. Didn't realise that she had so few points to defend for the rest of the year! Would be great if she could force her way into the top 15.. :)
Kirilenko..hmm.. hopefully she will develop her game more? Hope her game hasn't plateau'd

Well she's made points up this week as she went out first round in Toronto last year.
Her record after that was
New Haven - 1st Round
US Open - 3rd Round
Beijing - 1st Round
Seoul - Final
Filderstadt - 2nd Round
Moscow - 1st Round
Zurich - 2nd Round
Linz - 1st Round
Philadelphia - 1st Round
So lots of places for her to gain points!!
Kirilenko does seem to have stalled somewhat doesn't she & she has lots of points to defend soon having won the China Open last year.
I think Schiavone has been injured recently so that may explain that loss - she has a huge number of points to defend in the indoor season so she better sharpen up soon.
GS2 - August 16, 2006 05:24 PM (GMT)
Chakvetadze breaks Petrova early to go 3-1 up - will we see a rerun of San Diego?
Ivanovic 6-4 1-2, up against the inform Zheng Jie.
Sugiyama takes the first set 6-4 against Media Garrigues
Jackson & Hantuchova in a battle - Jackson serving at 5-6.
LDF - August 16, 2006 05:34 PM (GMT)
Chakvetadze takes the first set 6-1...

I hope Clijsters the big yawn doesn't win
I hope Hingis can win! :D

I just wish she would be a bit more positive sometimes :( Im still hoping her and Hingis get through their part of the draw. I think it would make for an interesting match

Yes Anastasia does get down on herself sometimes. Can make for her being sooo unpredictable. She has had stages of squeezing through matches against players ranked way below her, and making 60 UE's and 50 winners in the match!! It's as if she's fighting herself as well as her opponent.
Anyway, 1 set all at the moment. Hopefully she will get through the 3rd set ok :)
liam_valid - August 16, 2006 09:34 PM (GMT)
Her match against JHH was awful :( She even admitted later that she was in a bad mood because they put her on so late. I think its possible that Justine let her get back in that second set just to cheer her up ;)

Drat :( My scoreboard keeps freezing-it says 2-2 here. Although it seems that neither of them can take a 2 game lead in this match. I expect she break straight back
petalp - August 16, 2006 09:47 PM (GMT)
yip.. there has been a few deuces on Peer's service match..
Myskina has broken back immediately!! I think that she had 4-5 break points in the game before she took it!!
So it's now 3-3
petalp - August 16, 2006 09:50 PM (GMT)
And now Peer has broken back.. 4-3 to her.. :(
petalp - August 16, 2006 09:54 PM (GMT)
Peer holds to lead 5-3 ... :yikes:
C'mon, Ana!!
petalp - August 16, 2006 09:57 PM (GMT)

Peer? She hits the ball very hard!! But you're right, she is very inconsistent. As capable of blowing an opponent away as she is to completely shank a match. File under sporting cliche of 'dangerous floater'.
Not been a great night for the players that I like most.. :(

Could another Tier I for Martina be on the way?
ObL!v!0N - August 17, 2006 08:18 AM (GMT)
Told ya I'm psychic!
Once again, I am the only one who is correct!
I said Clijsters wouldn't win here, and now she can't!
Anyone want the lottery numbers?! B)
ObL!v!0N - August 17, 2006 07:00 PM (GMT)
Vaidisova is the latest "casualty", Tendinitis.
petalp - August 18, 2006 12:22 AM (GMT)
Hmm.. Martina Hingis v Daniela Hantuchova..
So far, Dani leads 5-4, on serve, though both have broken once.
37-36 in terms of points!
Am a big fan of both of these players.. completely torn as to who I want to win!! :yikes:
petalp - August 18, 2006 12:31 AM (GMT)
hmm.. Martina has broken to go 6-5 up..
Would like to follow this more.. but it's far too late..:(

Just noticed Vaidisova has withdrawn with injury. Maybe they should rename this the crock cup. Even Keovanthong should have a shot at this next year
