Title: Cincy, Round 01
Description: Thoughts?

petalp - August 14, 2006 08:36 PM (GMT)
Hello,

A general thread for the early part of Cincy, although the Murray Henman match certainly will merit separate attention!

So far, Davydenko's poor form has continued, knocked out already by another player having a bad run (Chela) in 3 sets.. Not a show-stopper, that one!

Baggy has progressed against Tommy Johanssen 7-6, 7-6. Was nip and tuck, that one.. but Baggy prevailed comfortably in each tie break.

And Nick Amalgro shows a return to form of sorts with a good win over Alberto Martin, 6-3, 6-3.. Not sure how far he will get on these faster courts..

And Nalbandian is storming through his first round match.

The Grosjean Tursunov match looks far more interesting. Seba took the first set, but it looks like Dmitry is odds-on for the second set.. Who knows which way that one will go??

The Korean, HT Lee, has been in pretty good form, too, and he opens his match by breaking Clement in the first game.

And he's taken the first set, hasn't he, nick?

I think I recall him giving Hewitt a run for his money at SW19.. he has good groundstrokes.. and a fantastic backhand....

Ooh.. he has match point!! I clearly had some catchup to do here..

Arnaud is hanging on though.. but looks like an upset on the cards there..

Yep. Lee takes the match. I was expecting to see Ginepri out of it as well, after the way his match started. That would not have been much of an upset, as Mathieu has been in decent form, and Ginepri has not, but he turned it around and won 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.

The winner plays Federer most likely so its pretty accademic any way

JymJilly - August 15, 2006 11:27 AM (GMT)
Andy may have a chance of beating Federer ( small one)
But Tim will have no chance. What a pity he stands in the way . Yet AGAIN. :(

Both have no chance lets be realistic about this!

One never knows in sport. Andy could take a set like Gasquet did.

I dont see Murrays game matching up as well to Federers as Gasquets does, and taking a set doesnt win you a match if it did then Federer would have lost 4 times last week!

JymJilly - August 15, 2006 12:15 PM (GMT)
I know , i know
But like I say sport is full of suprises . And ocassionally Federer gets beat. but unlikely in round two.

JymJilly - August 15, 2006 12:18 PM (GMT)
Hang on a minute. Who does Federer play in round 1 ?

Paradon Scrihipan from Thailand dangerous player but he is not what he once was!

JymJilly - August 15, 2006 01:12 PM (GMT)
Oh yes of course I forgot. Nah he is not much good these days. Whtever happened to all that promise he showed ?

JymJilly - August 15, 2006 01:13 PM (GMT)
Tim wiped the floor with him in the Davis Cup. That was when he was supposed to be good. And Tim had a very bad shoulder. And I was there watching in Birmingham.

ark_28 - August 15, 2006 01:17 PM (GMT)
I didnt see that match but when he was in the top 10 he was a very talented shot maker I remeber he knocked Agassi out of Wimbledon one year but he hasnt really come close to reaching those type of heights again

JymJilly - August 15, 2006 01:50 PM (GMT)
Well it will be 4 years this September believe it or not. Tim Henman beat him in straight sets to win the tie. After that he went off and had shoulder surgery and missed the 2003 A.O. The only Slam he has ever missed. Greg did not play in that Davis Cup tie because he was injured.

Good for him

Any way more impotantly as an A Rod fan glad he is on the come back here Bracalli will be tough but Andy should take him out, and he will hopefulyl make the quaters here :)

Nick Havoc - August 15, 2006 04:19 PM (GMT)
What's happening? Henman and Murray are playing now, right? I was just checking in for an update . . . .

petalp - August 15, 2006 04:58 PM (GMT)
Great win for Max Mirnyi over Xavier Malisse, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 !!

Thought that Malisse would be the form player after playing so well in Toronto, but well done Max!! :)

Nick Havoc - August 15, 2006 05:38 PM (GMT)
 Soderling is up 5-2 in the first set vs. Berdych.

Nick Havoc - August 15, 2006 06:59 PM (GMT)
Soderling goes on to win that one.

Meanwhile, Nadal earns two break points against Querrey at 4-4 (the first of the match so far), but Sam saves both. It's now in a tiebreak.

welshboy91 - August 15, 2006 07:01 PM (GMT)
Queerey takes the tie-break 7-6 [5]

ark_28 - August 15, 2006 07:31 PM (GMT)
Gimlestob beat F Lopez thats to me a suprise it was 6-3 7-6

Nick Havoc - August 15, 2006 09:28 PM (GMT)
And Gasquet just went out against Robredo. Not an upset, I guess, since Robredo is highly ranked, but Gasquet has been hot lately. It doesn't seem any of those who reached the latter stages in Canada are doing so well in the first round here. We'll see if Federer can break that trend . . .

Well, Murray's beaten Henman - although that can hardly have been a surprise! I was very sorry about gasquet - he had been playing so well, and now he goes out in the first round in straight sets, admittedly close ones. Roddick has lost the first set to Bracciali and Monfils slew Safin! Well, Nadal is through, but he dropped a set. Lucky you, Nick, in louisiana - you'll be able to see the Fed match or at loeast follow the loive scores. It doesn't start until 2 a.m. here in Denmark

Well, you know I went completely against the grain on the beeb message board by stating that Gasquet wasn't the great hope of tennis just yet.. There was too much building up of him imo, which people are far too eager to do these days, when a player puts a half decent run of results together.

One of my points was that he is still prone to exit from some tournaments at very early stages - seems to be either the 1st/ 2nd round or the semi/ final for him!

By the same account of course he should not be written off as a flash in the pan either. He has way too much talent for that.

I just think that whoever is the most consistent of the young bunch will be the one most likely to challenge Fed and Rafa in the future. At the moment, for me this is likely to be Novak Djokovic who has been consistently good all year. Was a lone voice on the beeb board who were busy building up Gasquet. Previously, several were building up Berdych too.

So, not a surprise that Gasquet has exited. Might indeed be a hangover from Toronto.

petalp - August 15, 2006 09:45 PM (GMT)
Ah.. hadn't noticed that Djokovic was either in the tournament nor indeed that he had won his first round match! A good win too, against Jarko Nieminem.

So by backing him, maybe I've put a hex on him for the second round then..

Hmm.. the mysterious "it"..

What could Tim get at Flushing Meadows..? The flu? The yips? A beeb board-style 'chillling warning'? :yikes:

scolios - August 15, 2006 10:19 PM (GMT)
Or a bagel and a bread stick? (I really hope not!)

Ooh.. no, no-one's allowed to have 'bakery' moments against Tim at FM.. at least not in the first few rounds..

He's definitely due a kinder draw..! No Tursunov, no Murray, and no Fed in his quarter..:)

JymJilly - August 15, 2006 10:55 PM (GMT)
Aye poor old Timmy. Tough draw again. He wouldnt have got past Federer anyhow.
Its tough to improve your ranking when you keep getting top players in 1st and second rounds though. Still he has gone up a bit in the rankings so its going in the right direction. He did not play too badly today and it was an improvement on the last time he played Murray. Even so his unforced errors combined with Murrays great passing shots cost him the match.
I think he would have beaten him if his error count had been lower as Murray was not as good as last week. Tim should have took his chances and he had plenty in this match. Bit of the same old story really of late. Just not closing these matches out.
I hope it will come soon. I heard Flemimg say tonight his back was troubling him again :(

OSmeone - August 15, 2006 10:58 PM (GMT)
Roddick in a final set tie break...

JymJilly - August 15, 2006 11:02 PM (GMT)
Oh dear. I have the scores coming up as we speak

JymJilly - August 15, 2006 11:02 PM (GMT)
God 5 all

JymJilly - August 15, 2006 11:04 PM (GMT)
God he won by the skin of his teeth did Roddick. He shouldnt be struggling against players like that. What has happened to him of late?
He has lost his way hasnt he?

Henman is rubbbish - August 15, 2006 11:26 PM (GMT)
Oh the old back one again roflmao roflmao roflmao .Why doesn't he just admit the best man won.Glad it is seen that he comes up against "top" players in the first and second round. Sure Mr Murray will be glad to hear himself regarded as such.
