Title: Toronto Results: Round 1
Description: Your Thoughts?

petalp - August 7, 2006 07:58 PM (GMT)
Just tuned in to find most of the results going pretty much as expected so far..

Apart from Nalbandia losing to Sanguinetti 6-1, 6-2... :o

Sanguinetti won 59 points toNalby's 29... that is a sound beating..

Did any of you guys see this??

Good result for Tim though :ok: beating Bjorkman 6-2, 6-3..

Any other thoughts on other first round matches??

ark_28 - August 7, 2006 08:02 PM (GMT)
They showed like the match point on tc and were talking about it in the studio, Pethchey and Bailey both said Nalby didnt look fit and they said he did call for the trainer at one point but they werent sure what for.

No question though this is a staggering result and one hope that he would sort this out as he is too good a p;ayer to be turning in results like this.

petalp - August 7, 2006 08:05 PM (GMT)
Just browsing through other results..

Good to see Gasquet through, beating Santoro 6-4, 6-3.. good result for him..:)

Good result of Thomas Johanssen, beating Lopez.. recall his blog.. wonder if is vision is a lot better now??

Gonzo comes through a 3-setter against Soderling 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.. good stuff.. Genie wil be please (wherever he posts now.. Surely Gonzo is legally obliged to play Safin at some point (just as Tommy Haas is obliged to play Fed) these days??

Funny you should say that! Haas is due to meet Federer in round 3!

Hello Ark.. it sounds as if he just wasn't prepared for the tournament.. bad news for his fans.. I mean, many had been looking forward to him finally playing Rafa (had both got through to the semis..)

Yes! I'd seen that! ;)

I think that they might have played 4 or 5 times this year already.. would like to see Haas work himself through a draw with fed and rafa in it, and maybe get to play either of them in the later stages..

But I guess that's just me saying that I'd like for both Fed and Tommy to reach the latter stages :)

ark_28 - August 7, 2006 08:18 PM (GMT)
Haas has the game which can reallt test Federer, they have played a few times this year with Federer coming out on top but they had an amazing match at the Aus Open where Haas lost the first 2 sets but still took it to a 5th! Haas also has a win over Federer pre Australian Open albeit not on the offcial tour, BUT a win over Federer is still not something to be sniffed at espcially just after a Grand Slam.

I would agree.. I think that Tommy genuinely believes that he can beat the Fedster.. and I would expect him to have that belief. As you say, a win even in an exhibition match is still a win..

Fed probably has too much in the locker for him right now.. but hopefully it will be a good match..

I do like Tommy, which is why I was hopeful that he wouldn't be drawn to play Fed! I was the same when I found that Gasquet and Tim had both drawn Fed at SW19

Haas isnt my favourite player but I do love the way he plays tennis when he is on song he really is a joy to watch!

Another first Round match which intrigues me is Safin V Robredo.

Safin seemed to find some decent form last week making the Semis Finals at Legg Mason, he would dearly love to back it up this week but Robredo isnt the easiest of draw and its a guy who has beaten him in the past so he will have to play to a very high level to come through that match. I personally hope he gets through and also has a good run here I think he is just too much of a character and has too much game to just slip away and I think for the game it would be great to see him up challenging the likes of Federer and Nadal, as we all know he can genuinely beat these guys if he is playing at his best, the big problem with Marat has been in the mind and getting to that stage where he can meet the those sort of players! But last week for me was a very big week for him! but lets see how round 1 here goes!

Agreed re: Marat!! He has the ability, but neither the temperament nor the application these days, it seems..

He does seem to get tough matchups early in tournaments these days, but I guess that this is what happens when your ranking slips..

In terms of legally obliged matchups, he of course always has to play Gonzo these days.. played him at RG and SW19 this year.. and of course, they are drawn to meet at Toronto too, but later this time..

I'm just one of those for whom hope springs eternal with Marat.. I'd like to see him play Gonzo in this tourney as it will mean that he will make at least the QF.. :)

You make a very good point, If Safin makes the Quaters and has to face Gonzo! then you know he will be in some sort of form! when they met in RG it was in Round 1 and Round 2 at Wimby which is not ideal to get any momentum.

Did you see either of those matches? From what I remeber of when they played at the French Gonzo just played a great match, but at Wimbledon I remember Safin being 2 sets up then totally losing his cool which bascially helped Gonzo find some form and Safin never really recovered from that.

petalp - August 7, 2006 09:44 PM (GMT)
Yes, I did get to see the Marat Gonzo match at RG. Gonzo played a really solid match, and whilst Marat showed flashes of brilliance, they were too few and far between, and Gonzo was a worthy winner. It was really frustrating to see Marat shank so many shots though..:(

I may have the SW19 match between the 2 recorded somewhere (still working through many games.. helps with withdrawal symptoms!). It doesn't surprise me that the match may have turned out as you described.

If they do end up playing in the quarters in toronto then it will hopefully be a better match for them both having momentum, as both take some stopping when they get going :)

petalp - August 7, 2006 10:23 PM (GMT)
Well, Robredo has just emerged from a lon-ish doubles match (winning 11-9 in the third set).. hopefully will still be fresh for his match with Marat..

NOticed that Moya is beating Gaudio rather comfortably.. looks like it's not been a good year for GG..

JymJilly - August 7, 2006 11:53 PM (GMT)
Excellent result for Tim. They have played each other 10 times over the years and its now 5 all.
But overall I think Tim has always been the better player. In singles of course. It makes me think that if Tim had had the draw Bjorkman had a t Wimbledon he could have gone far.

Flame - August 8, 2006 12:26 AM (GMT)
i'd say bjorkman is the better player overall. both have a high of 4 in the singles rankings and jonas has been one of the most dominant forces in doubles tennis to boot. and i'll never forget when he put the sickener on tim at the AO.

but that's besides the point. tim kicked arse today and woohoo!! hopefully he'll use murray or ferrer as a mop in round 2.

Benneteau has beaten Baggy in 3 sets 5-7, 6-2, 6-3

I recall that Baggy has had a bit of an indifferent season at times.. is this just a sign of him struggling for consistency at times, or did he just come up against an inspired opponent, I wonder?

Scotsguy - August 8, 2006 07:39 AM (GMT)
Julien Benneteau (FRA) def./bat Marcos Baghdatis (CYP) 7-5, 6-2, 6-3

So Murray plays today and if he can get past Ferrer, I hope he can then beat Tim in the 2nd (nothing against Henman, I just prefer Murray), If he does he'll play Moya, Stapanek or Vliegen

Scotsguy - August 8, 2006 09:01 AM (GMT)
So today's matches are Federer vsMatthieu-Fed
Bracciali vs Tursunov-Tursunov
Mirnyi vs Haas-Haas
Hewitt vs Chela-Hewitt (close)
Malisse vs Davydenko-MAlisse

JCF vs Goldstein-JCF
Safin vs Robredo-Safin probably but rootin for Tommy

Stepanek vs Vliegen-Stepanek
Murray vs Ferrer-Andy(maybe a bit hopeful)

No I disagree ,
Henman has been a much better consistent singles Tennis player than Bjorkman and his results prove that and his runs in G.S's. Although I remember that A.O very well. That was the year Henman could have got to the final and he should have.

Hello people :) I'm new to this board, having just signed up about 10 minutes ago! I'm Andy_Leicester on the bbc boards (for any of you who go on there) and this appealed to me because of the fact it seemed a bit more grown up and not as childish as the bbc boards

anyway :D tennis talk... well I am hoping for a Murray win today, if it is Tim vs Murray round 2 it would be very exciting! and i would like for Tim to get his own back, even though i do support Andy too :)

I, like most, am pretty fed up with the way it's going  Thankfully you can ban people here, not like the BBC, so at least we don't have the trolls...

Tennis_Mad_Andy - August 8, 2006 01:55 PM (GMT)
Thank goodness for that!!! hallelujah  :yahoo: I dont understand what the BBC mods are playing at sometimes, they put people who arent actually bad onto moderation just for replying something at the people who are winding everyone up and basically trying to upset people  ah well i have found this board now, excellent :D

I was quite surprised at the fact there has been over 30,000 posts with only just over 100 members!! that is amazing.

We've made a lot of posts, mind you, 23,000 of them are in the Heyupp Folks thread  That's the big chat thread where we just all hang out, feel free to drop in :)

Nick Havoc - August 8, 2006 02:58 PM (GMT)
I'm surprised by the Baghdatis result. I thought he was going to do well here. Of course, Benneteau beat Marcos earlier in the year at RG, but I didn't think he'd win this one.

Nick Havoc - August 8, 2006 03:00 PM (GMT)
So, ark, are you poised to cover the big Vliegen vs. Gremelmayr match that we've all been waiting for . . . ? :D

Matches starting now are Ferrero-Goldstein...VAMOS JUAN!!!

Hi Andy

Would love to see a Henman v Murray rematch - with Tim coming out on top this time of course ;)

Murrays got a tough one to get past first though... and I think Tim will find it hard against whoever he faces.. but I like Flames idea of him using whichever player as a mop :)

Tennis_Mad_Andy - August 8, 2006 09:01 PM (GMT)
That would be ideal Pebs :D It's funny you got the nickname pebs because i think i saw ages ago on the bbc site your picture with a comment about tim a few wimbeldons ago and you do actually look like pebbles off flinstones! roflmao

If Henman manages to reach round 3 in this tourny he will probably rise another 3 places in the rankings, and to go further than round 3 would be a huge bonus! to be honest i just love it when Henman wins, this year i think he has a good record...

21 wins and 13 losses and thats not a bad record at all considering greg has won 6 and lost about 13 or something! I think Henmans underrated by a lot of people and yes i know as much as anyone he can sometimes throw away a good chance but he can still cut it at top level i have no doubts about that!

Flame - August 8, 2006 10:15 PM (GMT)

it's just not the same without your sweet positivity. with any luck he'll whip a few more of 'em (esp irritating scottish git). :)

You and me both hun - love Tim doing well and would love to see nothing more than him blast through this tourney. Problem is, he gets past the ones I think he might have trouble with and blows it when I get confident for him... sigh, the trials and tribulations of being a Henman fan...

He does seem to be having a good year though, hope it continues and he goes up in the rankings again :)

Hey Flame

missed you too hun - its just not the same without a few 'C'MOOOOOON TIMMY's from your good self!

Hopefully, his next match might be a slightly more sociable time and we can meet up on here to shout together!

And yes, I wouldnt mind him whipping a certain young Scots arse... though, a tad worried he might not do it

i'm more than a tad worried.

frankly i'd prefer if david ferret did his dirty work for him. i know it's the coward's way out but i don't care. henman's first match with murray was one of my saddest moments as his supporter. please don't let that happen again.
