Title: Crimes that shocked us.
davcapseles - July 18, 2008 03:20 PM (GMT)
With the recent dropping of JonBenet Ramsay's parents as suspects in her killing, it made me think of disgusting crimes that have taken place over the years.
Ones that stand out, apart from the gruesome one of JonBenet, include the 1986 murder of Anita Cobby, 1988 murder of Janine Balding, and 1992 murder of Ebony Simpson, all Australians. Also the 1993 murder of English toddler James Bulger, and the 1999 Clumbine scholl murders. These crimes were callous and horriffic.
What I find more mystrerious, however, are unexplained diasappearances, like Australian Beaumont children in 1966, and Daniel Morcombe i 2003, as well asAmerican Natalee Holloway in 2005, and English toddler Madeleine McCann in 2006.
What about you?

Woops, I posted this at 1:30 in the morning, and forgor to add the most important part.
At the end, I meant to ask, "do you believe the death penalty should be issued for certain crimes, I don't what about you:, instead of just "what about you".

I am firmly against the death penalty no matter what the circumstances. I know that some may call this naive, but I believe that in killing a murderer (or a supposed murderer) you are committing the same crime as the one who you are trying to punish. Taking a life is still taking a life whether it is supposedly justified or not. I'm sure many murderers feel that they were justified in taking other people's lives....
I didn't express this very well, but I think my general point is kind of made.

I get you RF. There was a debate on this a while ago.
I'd like to be against the death penalty, but I am not 100% so. I prefer a model of justice that can rehabiltiate and reform, but the questions are is that always possible? and also is it the right use of social resource on balance? (some feel it is wrong to spend tax on seriously bad criminals) as many people are angry that their taxes are wasted.
Also when I read what some folks have done and how that had affected the victms and their families, I often feel they are not deserving of a second chance - although a lot of these people are disturbed and I feel sorry for them for that. A lot fo victims and families only get closure if the person is gone, and some feel that death is the only way of redress so it's tricky. I often feel that not enough is done for the victims and families, and that is totally wrong as they shoudl coem first.
I'd only be in favour for serious crimes, and the main reason for me for being anti is in case of miscarriages of justice. I do value life immensely and everyone has a right to live. But I feel a lot fo folks who are totally anti death penalty are hypocritcal - as in they dont; seem to share the same passion for the victim, and also they woudl quite easily pass over peopel dying when their lives coudl have been saved as an accident, for eg. preventable disasters, lack of medical care.

It's a tricky one - certainly I don't prescribe to 'an eye for an eye' - but I also don't believe that some people deserve the relative 'comfort' of some jails i.e. luxury items, television, radio, classes etc.
For serious crimes, I think old fashioned boot campt style work should be carried out. 12 hrs a day. It would act both as a deterrant, and an effective punishment.
Ditto for young kids, bringing back more publicly 'humiliating' punishments could be good deterrants, as it takes away any 'kudos' for stealing etc.
I believe in rehabilitation where there is no question that a person is/was medically unwell/insane - but for those with no illness as an excuse, or even doubt over this - work camp style jails would be effective.

I'm also against the death penalty because think about some of the wrongly accused people who were convicted of murders e.g the cot-death babies. Their mothers were accused of killing them, only to later discover they were innocent. What if they received the death penalty?

I'm against the death penalty. All murderers, rapists and nutbags should be forced to listen to that CD recently released by John Barrowman over and over and over again. :) :)

This may shock you, me being Christian, but I actually agree with you. Giving life behind bars means tax-payers are forced to pay muxh extra. Take the Anita Cobby case for example. She was visciosuly killed by 5 people 22 years ago. These 5 are in jail never to be released, and I think it's just a waste of money. People like that can never be rehabilitated, as they're just mentally disturbed.

i think murderers and peadophiles should be given death penalties if they actuallt admit to the crimes. Anyone pleading not guilty, but are found otherwise should be locked in Fritzles cellar and never be allowed out. With no food so they have to resort to cannibalism. And castrated first to prevent the peados indulging in the murderers :)
