Title: Palermo and all that jazz
Description: Might as well start a topic...

Russiafan - July 9, 2008 04:44 PM (GMT)
Ok so here are yesterdays results:

Tuesday, July 8, 2008

Singles - First Round
Rossana de los Ríos (PAR) d. (3) Aravane Rezai (FRA) 64 61
(Q) Margalita Chaknashvili (GEO) d. (6) Yanina Wickmayer (BEL) 46 76(4) 64
(7) Mariya Koryttseva (UKR) d. Renata Voracova (CZE) 64 36 63
Lourdes Domínguez Lino (ESP) d. Katie O'Brien (GBR) 57 63 60
Olivia Sanchez (FRA) d. Ekaterina Bychkova (RUS) 76(1) 40 ret. (right leg injury)
Galina Voskoboeva (RUS) d. Emilie Loit (FRA) 46 63 01 ret. (left Achilles injury)
(Q) Han Xinyun (CHN) d. Angelique Kerber (GER) 64 60
(LL) Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (RUS) d. (WC) Roberta Vinci (ITA) 75 63
(WC) Corinna Dentoni (ITA) d. (Q) Alberta Brianti (ITA) 46 76(3) 75

Katie bravely enters a clay event and loses a tight match against an experienced clay courter.

With Rezai out and a weak set of seeds, I'd say this title is Flavia's for the taking.

:giggle: Yes I am....I recorded as many junior matches from Wimbledon as I could :lol:Had about 4 video machines recording the BBCi stuff as Sky + can't record interactive

But the juniors are really interesting, always useful to see where the game is developing, what styles will become predominant etc...

Would like to see Pennetta vs Medina-Garrigues. Two players that can definitely be termed clay-courters, which is not nearly as common a term on the WTA as it is on the ATP tour...

Both can play well on faster surfaces though, especially Penetta. Play with a lot of soin though, which suits them pretty on clay.

You're right SG, the last true clay-courter on the WTA was someone like Anna Smashnova. The women generally adapt well to all surfaces

What about Gisela Dulko? Couldn't she be termed a clay courter.

Someone like Cornet is probably a future claycourter but I think she'll be of the Henin sort. At her best on clay but still able to play elsewhere (Obviously not on the same level as Henin  )

Yeah, but Dulko can thrive on other surfaces too, she won Forrest Hills after all last year

Yeah Cornet is a slow-court player no doubt, which is understandable with how much topspin she puts on the ball. Naturally quite defensive with her court positioning too, so ideal for clay.

Scotsguy - July 11, 2008 11:08 PM (GMT)
Pavlyuchenkova is in the doubles final :D

Problem is she's playing with Kudryatseva :sicky:

Surprisingly clay-court specialists Pennetta and Medina Garrigues both were eliminated and it looks as though they rolled over rather easily.

(5) Sara Errani (ITA) d. (1) Flavia Pennetta (ITA) 75 63
(7) Mariya Koryttseva (UKR) d. (2) Anabel Medina Garrigues (ESP) 62 62

Errani stuffed Koryttseva 62 63.

Just like Cornet, she also won the doubles with Llagostera Vives 26 61 104 against Kudryatseva and Pavlyuchenkova.
