Title: If you emigrated?
Harry Potter - July 1, 2008 07:07 PM (GMT)
Which country would you go to and why?
I'd become a Brit without a second thought tbh. So it'd be between Ingurland and Scotland, really. I've always liked the look of the countryside over there but I wouldn't mind living in the city either, at least it ain't boring. And most of my favourite things are Breeetish. I'd probably struggle with life in Japan and I'll be punted from Belgium before ten years' time (and I don't intend to stay here for that long).
Duchess - July 1, 2008 07:41 PM (GMT)
Interesting question Harry P. I must say I've never left the USA. I'd probably go to England or Canada. I'm a "sucker" for British accents & the other is close to home.
nevets - July 1, 2008 08:06 PM (GMT)
I'd quite happily live in Annecy with the lake, the Alps, the shops and the food :D
I could happily live in London or I'd like to live in Australia or New York.

I like the sound of both of them. :ok: Clean and fresh and civilised so I am told. I do like the sea though but don't like heat much so I need a place that looks like Southern Italy but isn't as hot.
I always fancied the look of New England actually. For the autumnal leaves and stuff. I guess I could move to Cape Cod cos I guess there is plenty of sea. :D
Scotsguy - July 1, 2008 10:00 PM (GMT)
Well I did for 9 months  I moved to Cyprus when I was 12....but back in Scotland now.
I would go either to France (Paris or Marseilles) I love the French people and their way of life or Tuscany. Partly because I speak French and am about to learn Italian so they would fit.
Or South Africa-the most amazing country, seriously I fell in love with it when I was there. Just a shame about the impending political crisis :(

My partner worke dwith a Canadian for years but he's left and goen back now. Smashing guy, he was funny and very respectful and friendly. He made it sound very nice, the only drawback beign that fi you were in the middel fo nowhere it could be isolated and the roads were nto like in the uk - they go stright so he said, then have a right angle turn. He alwasy hated our junctions and roads.
I thought Bavaria was lovely. Only thing again was not close to the sea. But th emountains were something else, although I never got used to seeing these wild goats everywhere and all those cows that look just like the Milka cow. I alwasy giggled. :D

If I were to move I would go to New York first on my list as Im a city boy to the max.Second choice would undoubtingly be London.I heard its a beautiful and the social life is amazing. Most of my favourite things are British anyway. :ok:

interesting question - especially as we have family all over the place...Serbia, France, Spain, Iran and UK.
Having lived in all of the above, I'd happily plump for any of them - but I would also quite like a holiday place in Siena. Maybe a nice hillside old villa...
Rankings would be:
1. Anywhere in Languedoc region - France
2. Barcelona - Spain
3. Belgrade - Serbia
4. Siena - Italy
5. Esfahan - Iran
We've got friends who emigrated to the Caribbean, too - half the time in Tobago, half the time in Barbados.
Got to say...all the above is quite good for holidays ;)

Scotguy....You right Marseille is a great city, I lived there for 6 years while it was dirty, dodgy and scary at times but a great genuine atmosphere, I am not sure it's still the same though. I always loved big city ports. (Naple, Chicago, SF, Bordeaux etc...).

Can you think of many other countries that combine such geographical and climactic variation with the combination of a long history and culture of an old-established civilisation, political stability and a high standard of living?
It's also got unquestionably the best wine in the world (no silly arguments about new world wine being jolly good please) and a wonderful cuisine.
Most other countries when put up against France lack either geographical or climactic variation or long-established history.
There is one small problem though, or perhaps 60m problems.....

In terms of being civilised and comfortable, yet varied and dramatic I guess you are right. A lot of countries that we think we'd like to live in actually don't offer the same standards as we are used to in the UK. Personally I prefer Italian cultrue, architecture, scenery etc for a European nation but it isn't as comfortable and civilised there form what I saw there and what I am told.
On wines, have to disagree because most of my faves are Italian :D Can't top a good Amarone Di Valpollicella (not that I cna afford it these days) and I like my Orviettos, Verdicchios, Pinots and other dry whites - but over here they seem to be going down in quality.
I hate French cheeses though and all that patissiere stuff. :sicky: I prefer Italian food, I'm very happy sat with something something simple and rustic like that, eating my olives, parmesan, fresh plum tomatoes, anchovies and drinking my wine. And I am a fan of proper pizza and love fresh seafoods of which there were plenty near Naples. :ok: Luckily I've had a couple of Italian firends who have shown me how to cook it, even though I say so myself my Italian food is very good, the ingredients are shite here though and it doesn't taste the same.
barrystar - July 2, 2008 01:08 PM (GMT)
Yeah - I'd agree that Italy runs France very close - better for architecture and culture and I adore Italian Food - indeed all mediterranean food.
Italian wine can be very good too - 2i to France's 1st.
The main difference is that France has an Atlantic coast, which Italy lacks for that extra bit of variation.
No problem with the quality of life though
Scotsguy - July 2, 2008 01:30 PM (GMT)
Well Italy and France were my two choices, and actually in terms of the people there I don't see them as a problem. People go on about French people being nasty but I find their company amazingly good fun. I certainly like the fact there is no binge drinking culture in either country :)

Yes, I know Prades – Catalan country – really lovely. I actually ended up learning to speak Catalan through living in Barcelona and frequently getting told off for speaking Castilian! You used to be able to buy t-shirts saying ‘No soc Frances, no soc Espanol - SOC CATALA’. I think it’s a great language.
I am hard pushed to pick a favourite between Italy and France…my husband and I discuss this (and it’s always a deadheat!)
1. Wine – France edges it for me on the reds…the Bordeaux! Though, I do like Barolo – with some Fontina
2. Food – Italian rustic fare wins – but France has to get a thumbs up for desserts and cheese. Oh, and bread…
It’s a dead heat! There needs to be a country called Italance or Franly!
Then again, also a place on a Greek Island…gorgeous sea, amazing history, great food, sometimes very, very good retsina. :D

I think i saw a piece of graffitti whilst out there saying something similar. There seemed to be a Prades graffitti artist who was wandering round changing all the signs to Catalan :giggle:

| QUOTE (trisco @ Jul 2 2008, 11:36 AM) | | Reading through this thread France does quite well as a place we would all like to be.. :ok: |

Everything you state here are the main factors why I hope to end up there someday.. :ok:
I'd quite happily trundle off asap and live on my own in a hut in an Alpine village :D

No problem with the quality of life though |
Yeah I guess there is the Atlantic, beauty of Italy is though that so much of it has coast that it is almost island like, and you can travel a lot my boat. I like stunnign views and clifftops best, loads of that in the South. But the quality fo life there isn't great, there are a lot of poor folks and primitive looking places, not much health care or social support liek ove here, and outside rich tourist places it's filthy, gangs, crime, graffit, loos like you se eon Candyman horror movie :sicky: , it smells and the electrics are totally crap!
You see genuine mafia too, those violin cases aren't just in movies and having a pizza as a coffin in carried past is rather odd.
Have a friend from Milan, she says it's better here so lives here. Milan gets very hot and very cold, and is dirty and has a lot fo roaches so she says. And she had to live in a really scruffy high rise flat as do a lot of folks.
