Title: Henman / Murray in Washington this week
JymJilly - July 31, 2006 11:03 AM (GMT)
What do you think are their chances? Both have a bye into the 2nd round . Henman is seeded 14. Lokk like his draw is quite favourable.

Good draws for them both i reckon - they SHOULD win their second round matches comfortably. Then henman would have to face roddick who may even pull out due to injury - though even if he doesn't i reckon tim would have a chance. Tim may then have to face his favourite opponent - Dmitry tursonov...i would have to favoure the russian. I reckon murray could reach the semis at this tourny though he'd probably have to beat agassi along the way
JymJilly - July 31, 2006 12:46 PM (GMT)
Seems like a decent line up . And if they both get a good run there it will be good for the confidence pre U.S Open. Henman needs to get his ranking back up badly at the moment. It must give him heart seeing Hass win his 3rd tournament of the year at age 29 I think. I reckon Tim is a better than Haas anyway. So who knows?

i wouldnt go that far - i think tommy is a better player than tim but not by far....i dont see tim winning another tournament unfortunately. The good news is that he has got Wildcards to toronto and cincy
JymJilly - July 31, 2006 01:00 PM (GMT)
Maybe we will disagree on that then. Its not bias . I honestly think he is. Also Henman has won more titles has had more consistency too.But their head to heads are 3 - 2 to Haas
JymJilly - July 31, 2006 01:00 PM (GMT)
Sorry Yes good news about the wild cards
ark_28 - July 31, 2006 05:07 PM (GMT)
I have to speak up for my boy A Rod!
He has started to play some great ball again first of all in Indy where he lost a tight one to Blake in the final, then Last week in LA where he pulled out as a precautionary measure!
Thankfully he is fine! I think while A Rods draw isnt the easiest I think if he plays the way he did in Indy he will make the final again where he will likely face Blake or Hewitt
Go A ROD!
Scotsguy - August 1, 2006 07:12 AM (GMT)
  A-Rod has pulled out.....he has been replaced by J-M Gambill
So far the results are
Kim bt Oudsema 6-1 6-3
Safin bt Kunitsyn 6-3 7-6
Carlsen bt Udomchoke 6-1 6-2
Moodie bt Querrey 2-6 7-6 7-6
Gremelmayr bt Whitehouse 6-2 6-2
Sweeting bt Gimelstob 7-6 6-2
Stoppini bt Goldstein 6-3 6-2
King bt Reynolds 7-6 3-6 6-3
Tipsarevic bt Venus 6-2 6-1
So 2nd round match ups so far are
(1)Blake vs Kim
Safin vs Mahut(15)
(9)Shrichipan vs Carlsen
Moodie vs Grosjean(6)
(3)Hewitt vs Spadea/Karanusic
Gremelmayr vs Phau(13)
Clement (11) vs Sweeting (Q)
Muller/Capdeville vs Hrbaty(5)
(8)Murray vs Delgado/Luczak
Faurel/Gabashvili vs Lopez(12)
(16)Fish vs Lisnard/Zib
Stoppini (Q) vs Agassi (4)
(7)Tursunov vs Massa/Dev Varmen
Dancevic/Lee vs Benneteau(10)
(14)Henman vs King (Q)
Tipsarevic vs Gambill (LL)
Nick Havoc - August 1, 2006 12:45 PM (GMT)
Anyone ever heard of Stoppini? Goldstein has been playing pretty well lately, and this guy seemed to have an easy time with him . . .
Scotsguy - August 1, 2006 06:24 PM (GMT)
Pick of todays matches
Henman vs King- Henman
Agassi vs Stoppini-Agassi
Blake vs Kim-Blake
Schrichipan vs Carleson-Carleson
Safin-Mahut-MAhut
Moodie vs Grosjean-Allez Seb!!
Muller vs Capdeville-Muller
Scotsguy - August 1, 2006 06:25 PM (GMT)
Stoppini seems to be a low ranked journeyman, he's 26 with a highest rankin g of 219
Nick Havoc - August 2, 2006 12:02 AM (GMT)
Looks like a really close one for Henman. It could be headed to a final set tiebreaker.
Or so I thought, when Henman was up 40-15 on his serve at 4-5 in the third. Now it's deuce.
Nick Havoc - August 2, 2006 12:03 AM (GMT)
Nick Havoc - August 2, 2006 12:12 AM (GMT)
But Tim comes through with a break in the next game and holds to take the match.
6-7, 6-3, 7-5
Flame - August 2, 2006 12:35 AM (GMT)
the king is dead. LONG LIVE THE KING!! :D

ark_28 - August 2, 2006 06:16 AM (GMT)
Wow he really was made to work I think if Tiparavic win his match and has to play Henman then Henman will lose
Nick Havoc - August 2, 2006 12:22 PM (GMT)
Agassi went out, though . . . I am so hoping he has a good run at the USO, but he's definitely not looked his best at Wimbledon or here in these last couple hard court tourneys.
Scotsguy - August 3, 2006 07:52 AM (GMT)
So the 3rd round up looks like this
(1)Blake vs Safin
Carlson vs Moodie
(3)Hewitt vs Gremelmayr
(11)Clement vs Hrbaty(5)
(8)Murray vs Lopez(12)
(16)Fish vs Stoppini
(7)Tursunov vs Lee
(14)Henman vs Gambill
So both brits have made the 3rd round, Murray should match up well to Lopez, as he likes playing serve-volleyers...Henman should win but Gambill is clearly no pushover if he beat Tipsarevic....Safin vs Blake(1) should be good and hopefully a close match..
I think the quarter final line up will be
Blakw vs Carlson
Hewitt vs Clement
Murray vs Fish
Tursuniv vs Henman
Mkkreuk - August 3, 2006 10:28 AM (GMT)
I can see a few upsets in the next round and i see blewitt going out...
Blake vs Moodie
Gremelmayr vs Hrbaty
Murray vs Stoppini
Tursunov vs Henman

I really can't see Hrbaty or Stoppini winning, fish is on good form....
liam_valid - August 3, 2006 01:06 PM (GMT)
Safin vs Carlson
(3)Hewitt vs (11)Clement
(8)Murray vs Stoppini
(7)Tursunov vs (14)Henman
Im going to be silly and go for a Safin win :)
Nick Havoc - August 4, 2006 02:00 AM (GMT)
Looks like the Safin v. Blake got suspended by rain, with Blake holding a break point against Safin's serve at 3-3 in the first set! Critical time to have a suspension. :o
It's on-serve at 5-5 now.
ark_28 - August 4, 2006 07:10 AM (GMT)
And Safin has pulled off his best win in a long time beating Blake 7-6 7-6
styeffo - August 4, 2006 07:52 AM (GMT)
"Henman should win but Gambill is clearly no pushover"
Seems that Tim wasn't listening, great win.....Tursy next.
Scotsguy - August 4, 2006 09:39 AM (GMT)
Safin beat (1)Blake 7-6 7-5
Moodie beat Carlsen 6-3 6-7 7-6
(3)Hewitt beat Gremelmayr 6-1 6-4
(11)Clement beat (5)Hrbaty 6-3 6-2
(8)Murray beat (12)Lopez 7-5 6-2
(16)Fish beat Stoppini 6-3 6-1
(7)Tursunov beat Lee 6-7 7-5 6-3
(14)Henman beat Gambill 6-1 6-3
So I got 6/8 right, not bad...
Quarter Finals
Safin vs Moodie-Safin
(3)Hewitt vs (11)Clement-Clement
(8)Murray vs (16)Fish-Murray
(7)Tursunov vs (14)Henman-Really hard as you can never know which player will turn up with either of these two, want Tim to win but reckon it'll be Dmitry...
Flame - August 4, 2006 10:59 AM (GMT)
henman v tursy on a hardcourt. doesn't get any better than that. can't wait for this one. come on timmy!!
SuperBRAT - August 4, 2006 11:09 AM (GMT)
Yes I hope Tim wins, but I feel nervous. I'd have to favour Tursy on hardcourt, am I right?

The bookies make DT favourite...
but he has been struggling with matches that he shouldn't be...taken to three sets by both massa and H T lee plus he is playing a lot of tennis (doubles + singles here plus he reached the final at LA where he might also have played doubles) so he is quite likely to be very tired which bodes well for Tim.
On the other hand, Tim had a good straight sets victory last night (though he had a tough match in the extreme heat in the second round against king). THough i dont know how to look into that result cos gambill has been really struggling in recent times and the second set was a lot closer...
Tim's been in good form on the whole this year so I'm gonna back tim to win 6-4 7-5 (plus getting that first win against DT at queens should have helped)
welshboy91 - August 4, 2006 12:05 PM (GMT)
I would love to see Tim beat his bogey-player and reach a SF against Murray. It would be great for British tennis.
BTW does anybody else think that Jamie Murray is starting to improve alot lately?

HT Lee is not someone you should be surprised to see pushing some of the more familiar players. He's been doing well lately. OK, so Hewitt is not in top form right now, but Lee took him to 5 sets at Wimbledon. He's also had recent wins against players like Philippoussis, Clement & Mathieu, and has won the last two Challenger events he played.
I'm not so sure about Massa, though . . . .
Scotsguy - August 4, 2006 03:24 PM (GMT)
Murray is playing at 8 BST, Henman at 12....
Poor Tim, him and Dmitry are the only two quarter finalists not on centre court. ;)

he's been dreadful in singles recently losing to players he really shouldnt be. But he is pushing to be a top 100 doubles player. He's no brit number 2 (behind aukland) and could be pushing for a spot in the davis cup team against Ukraine. He reached the final of only his third tourny on the main ATP tour along side american Eric Butorac though they lost to the twins (encouragingly though, jamie was not once broken in the final). They beat 2nd seeds (Parott/Thomas) and 4th seeds (Hrbaty/Coetzee) along the way so not a bad effort.
This week he partnered up with Coling Fleming at vancouver challenger (i think) and he lost in the first round i think against his partner at LA, Butorac and Parott.
still not bad goin (think he's ranked 138 in the world for doubles.)
Scotsguy - August 4, 2006 06:30 PM (GMT)
(11)Clement has just beaten (3)Hewitt 7-6 6-4
Murray begins in 30 mins
Mkkreuk - August 4, 2006 07:39 PM (GMT)
Murray takes the first set 6-2.

He seems to be in good form for this tournament. It would certainly be interesting to see a Murray v. Henman matchup in the semis.
Scotsguy - August 4, 2006 08:22 PM (GMT)
Murray wins 6-2 6-4, after a slight hiccupp at 5-1 up in the 2nd set...well done Andy, 3rd semi of the season....
ark_28 - August 5, 2006 07:39 AM (GMT)
Tursnov hammers Henman
so the Semis will be!
Tursnanov V Murray
Safin V Clement
Id love to see a Safin V Tursnanov final to of the most explosive hitter and tempramental guys on tour would be an amazing match plus it would be an all Russian encounter!
Scotsguy - August 5, 2006 07:48 AM (GMT)
Safin beat Moodie 7-6 7-6
(11)Clement beat Hewitt 7-6 6-4
(8)Murray beat (16)Fish 6-2 6-4
(7)Tursunov beat Henman(14)
So Safin vs Clement
Murray vs Tursunov
Want Murray to win the tourny but if not Clement or Tursunov...
welshboy91 - August 5, 2006 09:14 AM (GMT)
SG, I take it your not a Safin fan...
