Title: Venus, Serena out of San Diego

dl04 - July 29, 2006 09:53 AM (GMT)
Well Venus and Serena have pulled out of san diego citing injury and rest to injuries.

Here's the story:

Davenport, Williams sisters to skip San Diego WTA event

Lindsay Davenport and Williams sisters will all skip next week's Acura Classic in San Diego, according to the WTA Tour on Friday.

Venus Williams has withdrawn due to pain in her left wrist and Serena cited a sore left knee, while Davenport has been sidelined with injury since March with a back injury.

"I am training and rehabilitating and look forward to being back on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour as soon as possible," said Venus, a three-time champion at the San Diego event.

Serena played her first tournament in over six months last week in Cincinnati where she lost to Vera Zvonareva in the quarter-finals.

The former world number one said she's not ready after recovering from injury: "I am just coming back from injury and my doctor has advised me against playing too much too quickly."

All three Americans are entered in the Los Angeles tournament the week after San Diego.

It's a shame they've pulled out but i understand their concerns. Venus vowed after Wimbledon 03, when she played wimbledon with a torn muscle stomach injury that she would never play injured again. Those nagging wrist injuries( that she's had throughout her career) need to be rested and so i dont blame her for pulling out.

I also feel the same way about Serena, she'll only get back to the elite player she is by keeping her body in check. I feel by pulling out here and conserving playing time which could cause her more injuries is smart.

Any views?

Well to be honest I am not surprised. I dont' blame them for pulling out at all, they have to watch their bodies. I'm nto diggin gat the Willimases at all, but they in particular do often end up pulling out with injuries a lot. Do you think it's to do with their trainign regime or structure, lack of matches (they never played everything did they?) or just ehir ba dluck and body types?

:( Again a dissapointing thing to happen... :( The big 3 out again!... will they make the US Open?

There are very few top women's players who don't seem to suffer from injury. There's Davenport, Pierce, JHH, Clijsters.

In terms of the Williams in particular.. Well, they play such a powerful game. I think that their style of playing is a big factor, and moreso in the case of Serena. When they go for it, it must put quite a strain on their bodies (which I think can probably withstand this more than for many other female players..)

That puts to rest a few unwanted nerves... I was starting to fear that we might not see them there! Hopefully it should be a good US Open with everyone back from injuries, Venus, Serena, Lindsay, Justine and all! :D

Serena for the US Open! ;)

Well Lindsay has apparently told the LA Times that she's practicing pain-free and that her back has healed and she'll be returning to action in LA :yahoo:

Hopefully she'll get some wins under her belt in LA and New Haven before putting a good run together at the Open :D

Does anyone get the feeling Serena will do something special at the Open this year? She has a habit of putting in the most sublime performances in the most bizarre circumstances roflmao

I hope Venus can do something at the Open as well, i still cant believe she lost to Kim last year. Venus was right, Kim's errant forehands and lethargic serving can throw anyone off roflmao

BTW great news about Lindsay Dav! :yahoo: We need the Queen back to kick some ass on the tour( preferably Schynder's, Kim's or maria's) roflmao

Yes, hopefully the Queen, the Empress and the Goddess will all be in LA! Hey, we have no name for Kim - The atrocious forehand? roflmao

Mary has confirmed she's playing in San Diego next week too, so it looks like everyone is returning :D

I really think that Serena can pull off a great return to action at the US Open. I think that her not winning her last tournament was a good ploy as it will allow her to look at the areas that were poorer and it, for now, lets the other players on the tour know that she isn't back and therefore they won't look at her as a main threat... big mistake. She seemed to be right on form in her last tournament and especially against Myskina where everything about her game screamed of her '02 form and if she can keep it up and rest her body accordingly as she is doing between tournaments, they she may be on her way to a really good return at the US Open!

As for Venus, she too is resting her wrist and any other little injuries that have been with her since '03 and I think that that is the best option for her too as she showed glipses of her best at some of her last few tournaments, but too much rustiness. With some really good practice tournaments under her belt, I can see her going far as well and really sturring up some of the deadly memories of the Williams sister double act in '01 and '02!

Lindsay is a little more complicated as she hasn't played at all yet and still is to make her comeback but with the news of her training well without pain, there should be some room for optimism. On form, she can arguably challenge anyone and if she can find that form could go a long way at the US Open... however, I still have my doubts about her back and as she is only now saying that she is training pain free still gives room for concern as it could mean that in all this time she hasn't been pain free which suggests that the injury is of a very large scale and isn't going to leave without real nursing. Hopefully she can get her game back and challenge for the US Open title though I have doubts about her back even now after a good few months out.

- Serena should do well this year and I can see her making the Semi - Finals now that she is injury free however her lack of form could tell as she has to play 7 straight tough matches and as she would probably be a wild card, they would be hard ones.

- Venus is harder to tell, her form is constantly up and down but she too should put in some good performances and I'll say Quarter - Finals for her if not more with her wrist back to full strength.

- Lindsay is tough. She has this back problem and I still think it'll be a problem in the next few weeks which will hamper her return to action. With some good practice and rest up to the US Open, she could well make the Quarter - Finals as well.

However I would love to see them all do better and see Serena lift the title after having played her sister in the final with it being an epic 7-6(8) 5-7 8-6 victory! Of course I would also love to see Lindsay making the Semi's but then she would have to lose to either Venus or Serena... if the draw allows it.

We await the draw!

Actually I just remembered what my dad called her before... Shrek!

She resembles Fiona Shrek the Ogre... :D

Not to say that I don't like her... I do... she is one of my top players.
