Amelie has a tuff one today. I hope she will pull through this. Stosur is getting back to her level after all the timeout she had due to illness. Well done to her,but I want Amelie to win this one.

First Round Wraps Up; Petrova First Into QFs


EASTBOURNE, UK - The first round came to a close and the second round kicked off on the second day of play at the International Women's Open on Tuesday. The seeds went 1-1, with Nicole Vaidisova falling but Nadia Petrova winning a three-setter.

Vaidisova, seeded No.7 and coming off a quarterfinal finish in her first grass court event of the year in Birmingham, was ousted by Olga Govortsova in straight sets, 62 64. While she won two rounds to get to where she did in Birmingham, Vaidisova had suffered through a six-match losing streak before arriving there, and has now lost eight of her last 10 matches.

With her win over the No.18-ranked Vaidisova, Govortsova now has four Top 20 wins in her young career, having beaten Shahar Peer at Stanford last summer and at Memphis in February, and Marion Bartoli at Amelia Island in April.

Winners in the other five first rounds were Sybille Bammer, Virginie Razzano, Caroline Wozniacki and qualifiers Alisa Kleybanova and Ekaterina Makarova.

Petrova, seeded No.8 at the Tier II event, became the first player to reach the quarterfinals, beating newly-returned Li Na of China in a tight three-setter, 62 67(5) 63. Petrova actually had a chance to serve out the match at 62 54 and even led 3-0 in the tie-break before Li rallied to take the second set; but the Russian regrouped to take the third set and improve to 5-0 lifetime against the Chinese, who hadn't played since mid-February and has fallen to No.2 in the Chinese rankings, after Yan Zi (ranked No.48, compared to Yan's No.43).

Two of the world's best doubles teams were also in action and both advanced to the quarterfinals. Top seeds Cara Black and Liezel Huber won their 11th straight grass court match - a streak that includes title runs at Wimbledon last year and Birmingham last week - beating Edina Gallovits and Monica Niculescu, 62 60. Second seeds Kveta Peschke and Rennae Stubbs beat the wildcard team of Amélie Mauresmo and Svetlana Kuznetsova almost as handily, 61 62.

I guess the qualifier was more match harden on grass having also played Birmigham and obvi come through qualies...poor Vera...

Looking at the QF, the clashes are full of surprises and near unknowns... (with the exceptions of Petrova and Bartoli...and I guess Dulko...and Aga if she manages to pull back the next two against Razzano).

I wouldn't expect a Kuzzy defeat to the tune of 6-2 6-2 but I saw Wozniacki at Liverpool and she was looking very good.

I spoke too soon.. Wozniacki loses to Stosur 4-6, 6-7

Radwanska finished off her match against Razzano and will play Dulko later today. Petrova has just taken the first set against Makarova despite conceding an early break :yahoo: :yahoo:

Enjoyed Stosur;s play today. Very decisive and attacking, and after all that awful Lymes disease thign to. :ok: Good for her, woudl like to see her do well here and also at Wimby. The game needs more players like that.

She is very reminiscent of the past, attacking net players. Reminds me a little of Novotna with the service action. Good that she's found form so quickly after that awful disease.

Unfortunately Samantha has lost to Nadia who looks like she is running into some form here... :ok:

Yeah good for her, although she had a nightmare against Petrova today. I was shocked, Nadia seems ot have found some good form. Her returnign was awesome :bow:

What happened with that match? I was watchign on line, then there was rain. I went to get soem tea and do a bit of garden tidying, as you do :D , and then came back and the transmission had ended.
