Quite a tricky opening match for Federer there against O Rochus. Probably Hanescu next, who is a decent player but shouldn't really trouble Roger. Mahut will be a tough opponent in the quarterfinals, but the second quarter isn't all that strong, with Nieminen the likely semifinal opponent.
On the other side of the draw, Davydenko has a potentially tricky opener against Melzer, particularly considering his five-set match against Berdych today (it ended early because of Berdy's retirement, but even so it must be quite a strain to play such a match, then travel to Portugal and play Melzer there). He will be hoping that he gets to play on Tuesday. Gicquel in the quarters and Karlovic or Simon in the semis could be tricky encounters on that side of the draw.

I hope so. Anything less than a final appearance would certainly be disappointing. On the other hand, a victory here would not only provide a boost in ranking points, but also a much-needed boost in confidence going into Monte Carlo, where Fed has a lot of points to defend.

Well, on the other hand maybe he could use some more challenging matches? And he's going to have to beat an in-form Davydenko to win this title. I know he's never lost to him in 11 meetings, but they've had some reasonably close matches, even if most of them were in straight sets.
Kolya quite possibly has the form and confidence of his career, and he's bound to make Rog play a lot of balls (assuming they meet in the final, which is looking increasingly likely). I'm sure Fed can do it, but a bit of a test in the quarters and semis surely wouldn't hurt either.

Roger will need to be a little bit careful here today. Neither of these players should give him any trouble, but home favorites can always be dangerous, particularly at these smaller tournaments. In Japan in 2006, Federer almost lost to Suzuki, who I think was ranked outside of the top 1000 at that time. :yikes:

Serra actually has a good record against Davydenko, winning their only encounter in three sets last year - also on clay. That was in the first round, though, so a semi is a whole different ball game.
Go Kolya!

Saw on ATP's main page that Roger won in Portugal-I guess he's not dead yet!!!! :D It also said that Davydenko retired injured-does that still count as a win for Fed?
